Miata Slow Power Window Fix (Did 3D printing fail me ?) - Miata Restoration Part 26
Video log of the (attempted) restoration of a 1989 Mazda MX5 (aka Eunos Roadster or Mazda Miata).
Part 26:
Fixing up the slow power windows with new delrin runners made by Maikshifter. I had previously replaced the disintegrated originals with 3D printed versions, but I suspect these were not the best solution.
Many thanks to Maikshifter for machining the parts for me.
For more machining videos (and a fair bit of electronic music tech) I recommend his channel:

Hi, do you know what bolt length, thread size you used for the two holes that you drilled?
I can't recall off the top of my head, but I'll see what I can work out next time I'm in the garage.
@@Nigel_Taylor Thanks I appreciate it.
The elevator music got me! Also why do I think I could do this after one instructional video?? The voice?
He’s back!
I'll do my best to stay back ! But that couch does look pretty comfy.... Thanks mate !
Result! I confess I had completely forgotten I made those delrin rollers for you, so it was a nice surprise to see them being installed! I am reminded of removing the door panels in my Holden Astra SRi2.2 (except the little clips tended to hold on like a SOB, and I had to use Holdens special removal tool to budge em). Oh and thanks for plugging my channel..👍..it was very tastefully done...😉 I shall be renewing my sponsorship deal 😆
Thanks man. Yeah, I had forgotten about them too ! So happy with the result though !
How do we get a set
"Check my affiliate links below"... Just joking, that's not my thing. I've seen them on ebay and aliexpress - look for 'Miata Delrin Window Bushings'. ....or maybe we can convince Maikshifter to go into production !
Thanks Nigel! Its on my list. Got everything, I even even went with new transparent door film - not sure what to use to glue it tho. Recently got V spec door cards I am renovating, so will do all of it at once - maybe even step up a game and have doors sound dedned. When that day comes, it will be a looong day to do it all.
Thanks mate. Wow that sounds like you are doing it all properly. Good luck ! I'm not sure what kind of glue would be best - perhaps butyl tape - but I can recommend the tiny magnets for holding the door film on - even if only temporarily. I got sick of the film always falling off when I had the door cards off.
Yay! Nig's back and I've learnt something new again today!
Thanks mate ! I'll add 'MX5 restoration trainer' to my resume !
Always nice to see Nigel is somthing doing😅😅
Thanks mate. It was nice to be doing something !!
Definitely going to hire this guy to do the live action cine' on my next music video! (Oh, and thanks for the free branding spot 😉 )
Mate honestly. Good on you. These videos are brilliant. You definitely have a knack for you tube if you decide to take it up. Love watching the restoration as I’m looking at an mx5 myself.
Thanks mate, I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. I can't recommend the MX5 enough. Easily the most fun I've had on the road at sensible speeds, and they can still be tinkered with on the weekend. I suspect somehow that this will be a dying hobby....
basic tips in real time... nice!
I’m having similar issues.
I hope you get it sorted out. With hindsight, I should have done a fuel pressure test when the problem first came up, so this might be a good place to start. It also might be worth checking the cam angle sensor - I was convinced this was the issue for a while. Good luck !
@@Nigel_Taylor thanks I’m on an MX5 forum and this sensor check was also recommended by a member.
Its nice to have ya back unc
Nice machining!
Thanks mate. I'm still learning how to use the machine, but I'm happy with how it's going so far. As I probably should have expected, I'm now looking for problems that can be solved with turned parts....
great intro Nigel!
I'm glad you liked it ! I do enjoy trying something different from time to time. Just me yapping at the camera or turning bolts sometimes feels a bit boring.
great video! I'm beginning to suspect you might actually know what you are doing after all!
The secret is to edit out the stuff catching on fire
I’m happy to see you back.
Thanks mate. I'll do my best not to go dark again...
Awesome as always ! Welcome back all healthy and wise! it's been a while between drinks !
Not so sure about wise (or is that a comment about more grey hairs ??)
Great video, I was wondering about the long break from the last video but glad you're doing better now. Also, I would absolutely recommend better tires. Because they not only improve handling and feel but also safety and stopping distance.
Thanks mate. All back to normal now (which means I have to find other reasons to procrastinate). Some new rubber is definitely on the shopping list after the paint. I'm thinking of joining the crowd and going with a set of Michelin Pilot Sports, although I do have a dim recollection from my sportsbike days that Michelins we very much a no-no (for bikes at least). Do you have any favourites ?
@@Nigel_Taylor I do like Falken Azenis RT660 or Toyo Proxes R888Rs for track racing. But, Michelin tires are good (for cars) and I do recommend some Pilot Sport all weathers for casual driving and canyon carving.
He is back! Always liked this video series
Thanks mate ! Expect some more videos - and I can almost certainly guarantee you won't have to wait another year ! (Maybe only like 9 months....)
When are the next videos coming out!?
I know it's been a while, but I promise you haven't missed anything ! The shed I'm going to use as a spray booth has been inconveniently non-existent for longer than anyone expected, which has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works. It should be finished in the next 6 weeks or so, so I probably should watch some spray-painting instructional videos sooner rather than later....
Ahh you mentioned this video
Paco fender braces for the win.
Wish we could see the actual home
I’ve completed the series from start to finish watching every last second. It’s beautiful what you’ve done to this car and I can’t wait for the next part and see what you do next. I have turned the bell on for you so I know when you post I’m looking forward to it!!!! Thank you for the entertainment:)
Thanks Owen, I really appreciate the feedback, and it's great to see you like what I've done so far. Sorry it's been a while since I have put an episode up - I'm currently -procrastinating about- organising the next step
Entire series was amazing, watched them all from start to finish and loved every bit of it, the longer videos are great and I look forward to seeing the next part, this is the first time I’m actually going to use the bell icon to get notified about a RUclips video 😂
Thanks Callum. I'm truly stoked you enjoyed them so much - I never thought I'd earn a binge watch, let alone the coveted bell ! I need to get my act together and get onto the painting. I've been putting it off for a while because it seems like something I could royally stuff up (despite all accusations to the contrary, I really do have no idea what I'm doing...). You mentioned chassis rails earlier ? Are you thinking of installing some frame rails (I'm assuming you were talking about an MX5/Miata) ? If so I'd certainly recommend it - of all the chassis bracing I've done I think they were the most important. It's not a hard job once you get over the stress of having to drill holes in your car.
Felt like I was watching Top Gear, quality editing as always !!!
Gotta love some nice fab work, loving the series so far !!
Another great video in the series, just upset they’re so short !!!!
Stumbled across this channel whilst looking up how to repair my chassis legs, then noticed it’s a full series, the production quality on this video is amazing and it’s safe to say I’m excited to watch the whole series, how you haven’t got thousands of subscribers is beyond me, but you’ve definitely gained one today Nigel!!! Keep up the solid work
Hi what was the uk store you ordered from?
Hi Mate, I got the haul (and a subsequent one with the soft top) from mx5parts.co.uk/. You'll want to sitting down when it calculates the shipping, but I worked out it was still the best way to go compared to shops in the US and here in Oz.
You are a legend mate
Thanks mate. I keep telling my wife that, but I'm not so sure she is onboard....
this series is class! so surprised that it doesn't have more views. Good job mate!
Thanks mate, I'm glad you are enjoying it !
Hi Nigel! I just bought the same replacement top - yours seems to be made by Bas International- and I am about to install it. How did it fit in the end? Regards!
Hi Mate, I bought mine from MX5Parts.co.uk. I'm very happy with it but it's not perfect. It's a little loose on the rear right (behind the window), and the bit over the passenger's door isn't sitting perfectly. Nothing bad enough to actually do anything about. One thing I did discover is that the metal clips that hold the end of the rear windows zips together (sort of inside the soft top structure) are murderously sharp. I sliced my fingers open pretty badly trying to push out the side. Beware !
Videos are kind of short and the into and close kind of take up a bunch of time. I'd watch a 30 minute video of you doing multiple parts in one if you had them.
You might like the new one mate - 15 minutes or so of me bumbling around...
Yeh I saw was that me holding a leaf
Hey I know that guy
And I know THAT guy !!
Nice video mate
Thanks mate. If I recall you pop up in it at least a few times !!
By far the best MX5 videos on YT!
Thanks mate ! I'm glad people are enjoying them..
that piano in the back 🤮
Yeah - I've learnt a bit since doing that one...
The production quality on this video is absolutely astounding definitely look forward to binging the whole series
Thanks mate, I hope you enjoy the series. I did have a bit of fun with the smoke machine on the first episode, and it hasn't made a re-appearance (yet)...
@@Nigel_Taylor love the series so far I’m currently on part 12
If you know about the deflection of the brake cylinder, u sure know what you are doing 😉👍🔧🔩
The secret is to make it *look* like you know what you are doing !! I took it for a quick spin around the block yesterday. The brakes absolutely feel firmer, although at this point I'm not sure if this translates into any difference in braking performance (although it feels like it should). We'll see....
You may have already done this but replacing the rubber door bushes inside the door area with the nylon material also makes a difference do the rigidity of the frame.
I haven't done them yet, and have several times decided to do them and then changed my mind. I've got a mate who does machining for a hobby, and he made me some delrin window bushes, so I've been thinking of convincing him that making up some door bushes in delrin would be fun.
@@Nigel_Taylor I heard mixed reviews about them.
How many kms on this little fella? Do you think you will leave it normally aspirated?
Just clicked over 120 thousand - she's hardly been run in !! I've decided to keep it pretty much stock (apart from the handling upgrades) - I've had turbo cars in the past so I've checked them off the list...
@@Nigel_Taylor Yeah I have a NB2 2001 with 218,000 and going to keep it stock. I want to keep it reliable.
You need to replace the white nylon piece on the gear shift. Makes a huge difference. Mx5 mania in NSW if you have no where in WA.
Yeah. Guess what I found in a little bag when I cleaned up that day….
Brilliantly edited an voice overed video's. Nice humor aswell!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Aussie or kiwi? 😇😂
I'm Aussie but my mate who helped with the gearbox install is a Kiwi - so both !!!
As a 96NA Mx5 owner i am very curious about you series!
Thanks mate I am glad you are enjoying it. What state is your NA in ? Fixing/driving/endless costly spiral of both ?
@@Nigel_Taylor both, she is not pristene, 250K kilometers. To keep her in condition costs money. But there is a lively Mx5 scène in the Netherlands with enough used and after market parts. I own her two years now and all the maintainance and wrenching are done by myself, so that keeps cost low. Hope to enjoy as long as possible from the Mx5!
This video popped up in my recommended at the best time. I just got my v8roadster fender braces delivered as part of my chassis bracing kit I've been putting together. Already have a roll-bar and frame rails on so far. I'm curious if you've looked into other types of chassis stiffening such as rear torsion bars, front control arm bars, etc.
Hi Mate. So far I've put in a front and 2 rear chassis braces (IL Motorsport), the frame rails (Jass) and now the fender braces. I think the frame rails made the biggest difference, and I have yet to get it on the road after the second (lower) rear brace and the fender bracing was installed. To be honest, I'm expecting diminishing returns on bracing at this point.
@@Nigel_Taylor ahh makes sense with the diminishing returns. Thanks for the advice, I wanna stiffen my Miata as best as possible without throwing on too much extra weight. Keep up the videos!
how does this not have more views whattt
Thanks so much ! This started just to keep family and friends up to date, but I'm super glad other people are enjoying it.
Instead of going the MX-5 route I ended up buying an MGF - as I can no longer afford the asking price for many MX5s on the market. I really want some chassis stiffening for it, there is a company in the UK that makes them but the international freight is killer for heavy items! It's my first convertible but the body flex is difficult for me to get used to after driving mostly sporty 2 door hardtop cars.
Yes, I ended up shipping the frame rails from mx5mania.com.au/, and the shipping was reasonable given the size and weight, but ordering parts from the UK (which I have done on a few occasions) can be pretty eye watering in terms of shipping costs, depending on what you order. In my (questionable) opinion the frame rails made a huge difference, and assuming the MGF is similar I would absolutely recommend them.
