I love to play music and have been performing most of my adult life. These days I play swing and early jazz with Robin Godfrey on piano as "Swingstein & Robin", but over the last 50 years I've been in many bands playing mostly fiddle, but also writing songs and playing guitar sometimes: Booger Hole Revival, Back Road Travelers, Trusty House Band, Contrarians, Wild Ones (aka Gypsy Stars). I have made several records and CDs over the years, and written a lot of songs and music that haven't been recorded. I am politically active and write and perform to support causes I believe.
(stay) On the Sunny Side of the Street (in 2025)
A little season's greeting's holiday card to all my friends and family to find a way to stay in the light (while resisting the dark) in 2025! Ist chorus after vocal is an etude by jazz violinist Jason Anick, The rest is my improvisations. On the Sunny Side of the Street was written by Jimmy McHugh (though possibly he bought the rights from Fats Waller) w/lyrics by Dorothy Field, 1930.

I Fall in Love too Easily
Просмотров 33Месяц назад
I relate to this song. When I was young, it definitely described me. But a great therapist helped me process the reasons for that and helped me get to the right place to meet the true love of my life who I’ve now been married to for 28 years. So I hope I put those old feelings into this rendition of this truly perfectly crafted standard. This is the Chet Baker head and solo followed by 3 improv...
Anthropology, Morphology, I Got Rhythm

Anthropology (Charlie Parker, 1945) is a contrafact of I Got Rhythm (George and Ira Gershwin, 1930). Morphology (Epstein, 2023) is also a contrafact of I Got Rhythm I wrote (there are many many contrafacts of I Got Rhythm, a whole sub-genre called "Rhythm Changes.") I sing the original as well. I'm on a jazz journey with help from LearnJazzStandards.com, a subscription service, and recorded thi...

There Will Never Be Another You

This video was taken live on my iPhone with a backing track from LJS (Learn Jazz Standards dot com), a subscription I use. after the "head", it's all improv until the I sing near the end. For those who have known me for a long time, my voice will sound different. Age, I guess, because its been like this for almost a year. Vocal cords were checked and no noticeable problem.

I turned on the backing track, played a loose version of the melody, then a "contrafact" I'd made up some time ago, followed by some free improv. And I did it without the aid of any mood enhancing substances :).

Fort Hill Candidate Event 2020 Highlights
I heard a story that this song title came from when a someone who regularly got pushed in a wheelchair for a walk always asked to go on the "sunny side of the street". I love this melody! Kudos to you for doing that jazz thing!
Gonna need this. Thanks!!!
Happy New Year 🎉 I love this song ❤

Great music for good causes!
Good stuff, Paul!
Glad to see you're still playing!
Great playing Paul. That's a tricky tune. A lot of practice has gone into this..!! ;-)
You're right about that! Much as I wish I could improvise those variations on the fly, it took me quite a while to work them out and master them.
@@Paul1Epstein Well you've done a very good job indeed..!! ;-)
Prodigious memorization! Well played and a tune worthy of the time it must have taken to learn it.
Well played Paul. This indeed is a tricky tune. You've done well with all the variations..!! ;-)
thanks John!
Great tune! I've been working on this one too... nice to see what you did with it. I've only found a couple of versions on You Tube.
This is so good Paul I love it!
Thanks for sharing your creativity! What a contrast between the days of Camelot and Kavanaugh! Glad you ripped off the mask at the end.
the lyrics to Edie's tribute version of "Major General" ...he's almost vegetarian. He even bought a pair of jeans so he could look agrarian. And yet in spite of all his years he doesn't look to square in them. (repeat 2x). He practices his fiddle and like Nero plays while Rome does burn. He mows the lawn with energy at noon and risks a bad sunburn. He loves the thought of drinking, but sleep keeps him in sobriety. He volunteers with Compeer at the Mental Health Society. (repeat 2x) He plays quartets, writes up our grants for all the chamber music groups He hardly misses any chance to play or hear performing groups He reads Great Books and ponders over Torah and the Midrash Although he often takes a break to fix himself a little nosh. (repeat 3x) In short in matters musical, familial, and sectarian, he is the very model of today's octogenarian. He loves the role of patriarch for kids far flung yet close to him. He dotes on grankids everyone from Israel, Charleston, and Cherry HIll (sorry, it doesn't rhyme), He also is my sweetie and I love him and I always will Especially if he leads the way to each new decade o'er the hill (repeat) In short in matters musical, familial, and sectarian, he is the very model of today's octogenarian.
I remember this great celebration well. I'm so lucky to have married into the family and to have known Josh & Edie. Thanks for the memories.
