The Jellycat Craze

In this video I cover the hype surrounding Jellycat. I ask the questions: why are they so expensive, and why are they becoming so popular? I gathered my information from across reddit forums and blogs, as well as from interviews held with creative directors at Jellycat.

hi guys and welcome to my second commentary / video essay - style video. today i touch upon something that i've thought about for a very, very long time. an issue to do with filipino culture and the media that has gone unquestioned for too long. i talk about the issue of internalised racism and colourism in the philippines, and how the filipino media, in who it chooses to represent, is the main...

    I'm not on Tiktok so I didn't know that these were so The Moment right now until recently, but I knew them as kind of the *designer* stuffed toys from all of my years teaching toddlers/preschool. The kids with a classy, low-key luxury vibe (think muslin overalls and floral prarie dresses rather) always had a Jellycat as their naptime stuffed toy. I have two little kids of my own now and wanted to check out their website and got sucked into buying the Spindleshanks Spider because my toddler loves spiders and that's the first cute spider stuffed animal I've seen that wasn't glittery or neon or with a huge head and tiny legs. Even at an obviously luxury price point I was not disappointed when he came in, he loves it, it's crazy soft and weighty and definitely high quality. And has long spindly legs as a spider should. And now having made my purchase RUclips seems to want to recommend me Jellycat content and I'm here for it haha

    Thank you so much for your informative video. I first encountered Jellycat at a card shoppe while looking for cute stocking stuffers for my wife. I believe their appeal comes from their inherently paradoxical design. They are simplistic without being plane, contemporary in their choice of items depicted (comestibles, everyday objects, et al.) while still appearing nostalgic and gentle while avoiding the maudlin or histrionically cute styles adopted my many contemporary toy manufacturers. In short, they’re positively addictive.

    I got my fist jelly cat recently. It’s a strange thing . When my mum got my a pastel purple bunny , I said I didn’t like it , it looked like it was meant for a new born baby . So I think the selling point is the social media attention to discretely cute faces and legs . But with the twist of age appropriate appreciation for modern items that bring someone comfort. Like if ur favourite food is a pan au chocolates, there is a jelly cat to give that comfort. I think this new wave for soft maximalism can show off someone’s interest and personality in a stylised way. Yes jellycat does cost more money but these items mean more . There are sentimental.

    My first Jellycat plushie was the squiggle mouse. A smol rosey pink little guy that just looked so soft and perfectly floppy; plus it was a mouse plush! Mice have always been one of my favorite animals growing up and it's so rare to find a cute mouse plush so seeing him felt like it was meant to be 🥺

    When I first started collecting stuffed animals, I did start with squish mellows back in 2017. I love them up until 2021 2022 when they change their company and their quality qualities started getting cheaper and cheaper in the fabric changed in the stuffing as well, that’s why I got one cat and then I found the dragon so I got a dragon and then I got another dragon and I am about to order another dragon Each time the qualities the same they’re so soft. They’re so cute and funny. I really love how goofy their characters look. I especially love their goofy fat frogs and I will be getting me one of them goofy fat frogs thing is absolutely hilarious how they have other mundane items, cute such as toilet paper or a baseball bat they somehow made a roll of toilet paper. Pleasant to look at honestly might buy it. They are expensive but I would say worth the money. They’re so soft and amazing and cuddly. I will definitely stop being my squish, mellow collection and moving over to jelly cats, I will keep my squish mellows. I have a lot of them and I don’t want to part ways. I love them dearly, but I might downgrade.

    Millienial here. I saw them on tik tok. Fell in love with their aesthetic. I have children, so therefore have the perfect excuse to start collecting with them, however with that being said even if I didn’t have children I would have still caved and started collecting anyway. My first jellycat was Miff Moffman. And my daughters was Sage Dragon. As I was visiting Paris anyway, I had to stop off at the patisserie and had a lovely experience, that me feel like a child again. That sense of joy.

    Thanks for the interesting bit of info on the company. I had no idea about any internet hype, I simply discovered the brand when going into a small independent toy store and basically falling in love with a Huge Sage Dragon. There was just something about the feel of the fur and the kind of soothing calm that somehow radiates from the toy. Since then, the dragon family may have expanded a bit. 😅 Interestingly, Jellycat CEO Arnaud Meysselle mentioned during a July 2024 interview that the brand defined itself as "lifestyle and luxury" rather than a toy company, and that they initially had no social media presence. It was the fans creating content during that certain period in 2020 on Tiktok that made Jellycat known. They also have a deliberate policy of not going through usual large scale general retailers or toy retailers, favouring small independent toy shops and also a select few concept stores embedded in high end department stores, e.g. the Pâtisserie at Galeries Lafayette in Paris, or the Diner at FAO Schwarz in New-York

They are even softer, in my opinion, and so cute. I now have several bunnies and couldn’t be happier with them.

    Interesting video! I’ve collected them since 2018 so seeing them be so popular now is a bit of a madness. I think up until only a few years ago they were seen as baby toys which this obviously shifted. Popularity definitely increased in 2021-22 but they weren’t as mainstream / everyday name as the present, where nowadays they’re everywhere on social media. I do wonder if it is just the next craze, as squishmallows were the main “thing” at one point (ofc they’re still popular but not in the limelight as much).

    They could have a house together. The Ladies of Llangollen had a house together, and I'm sure they aren't the only ones. In fact, it would be fairly easy for two women to share a house together. The thing is, I don't want her to have a platonic love for John (which doesn't mean I don't want her to have a romantic love with Michaela, but I would prefer it were after he is gone). It was delightful to see another type of romance (probably the type of romance most real people experience and seldom shown); if she were bi and had two great loves but Michaela is gay, that's fine. A couple of things they did in that last episode are worrying that way, but I still have hope. Michaela can inherit the title, which I keep seeing people saying she can't. I think (and I've said several times elsewhere) is that choosing to be with Michaela despite the fact that they can't have children together would be really powerful, and I'd like to see that. I am overall looking forward to this storyline. I also know that some people do want John to not be one of two great loves for Francesca but for her "real" or "romantic" love to be Michaela. I do think this is not going to be a story where they can't be together at the end. They will be together at the end. And, although _Bridgerton_ is not very historical, this would be actually accurate to things that have happened. Anyway, we'll see how it goes.

  • @funkycrawler619

    I also want to add- physical love and emotional love are very different (and I think heterosexual stories rarely cover this topic). Fran feeling a physical spark does NOT diminish the emotional love she has for John and exploring this love is going to make this story even more beautiful and I do think the show taking liberties in the world building they've done I am excited to see how queer rights and gender rights progress in the show. But finally a discussion about the change that discusses this adequately and not just hating to hate!

    It was SM who cast them. Could they done like jyp (vcha)and hybe (katseye) and at least included asian / asian descent people? would be great to have diversity as some wersterns groups pointed out to only have 1 non white members is a large task of representation. But diversity at point of tokenism can be complicated, I dont know, if coming out at the point of cosplaying cultures as some katseye material gives me the impression off. I guess that SM's strategy is to use the kpop marketing system of cultivation of a lot of bts videos, and idealization of the artists, lots of fan interaction , fan service, in the good sense. Fan culture of online discourse, dance chalenges / covers, get exited over a hair color change. Also the colections of merch, photocards and albuns. And cross promotion with their artists and fanbase.

    • @talasofiabriones
      @talasofiabriones Месяц назад

      right. it seems tone deaf to me to have a 4/5 all white group and try to nod to some culture by a) having a token poc member and b) nodding to being “made in korea.” if you want to see multicultural, k-pop influence crossing boundaries, do it the way that jyp & hybe have!! it seems clear to me that the appeal to k-pop has always been the alternative cultural element anyways. so to slap in on what is essentially an all white boy group that dances, is not empowering for anyone but for those who are already represented in mainstream media

    I was hoping someone was gonna say it. Thank you so much! I really don’t know the point of this group?? Kpop is known as K pop for a reason, it’s Korean pop. You can have Western members in a kpop group, but the group is overall a Korean group, they were trained as if they are Korean, they sing in Korean and they are expected to be fluent in Korean. So now we have dear alice which is not your typical British boy group because they were trained like kpop idols. I feel like their fans are gonna have double standards. If we treat them as a kpop group, then they should also have the ‘no dating’ rules and their fans are gonna say ‘oh they are not really a kpop group, they can date whoever they want to date!’. If we treat them as a British boy group like one direction, they should be able to sing and produce like one direction and if someone says they can’t really sing, their fans are gonna say ‘oh they’re not really like one direction because they were trained like kpop idols so they are not expected to produce their music and as long as they have stable vocals when they dance it’s fine’. Like you can’t be this and that at the same time. So I don’t understand why we need this group.

    I think one reason wlw ships are unpopular is because female audiences at large (even straight women) suffer from comphet brain rot. Like the only way to be seen as valuable in this society if you're a woman is to be desired by a man, that's the only thing that validates your existence. They're addicted to the fantasy of being "picked". I think a lot of queer women can understand this, the difference is we have to actually confront it at a certain point. Great video, definitely like the only good take I've seen on this.

    I only just got on the Bridgerton train, I had no idea Rege and Simone had backlashes as well, not surprising considering Rege never made a return to the show, despite they’re the reasons how popular the 1st and 2nd seasons are… I so badly wanted to give the show’s fandom benefit of the doubt and believe they just really love the books a lot instead of quickly assuming homophobia and racism, but judging from their track record it mostly and sadly seems to be the latter case. I sincerely hope the show keeps Michaela since it isn’t everyday we get a silly period sapphic romance with two traditionally feminine women. One harmless genderbend isn’t going to topple a whole narrative and certainly isn’t worth a hissy fit of them harassing the writers and actresses

  • @talasofiabriones
    @talasofiabriones Месяц назад

    To reiterate my view, from an ASIAN perspective, I believe that there is already a massive platform for boys like this in the entertainment industry IN GENERAL. My concern stems from the fact that K-pop is a specific branch of entertainment that is special because it targets a specific ethnic minority that is severely underrepresented in general media. K-pop arguably is the only thing that Asians have to be proud of and to feel represented. So for that niche title to be extended to boys who, quite frankly, didn’t have to leech off of it to be popular, feels like a massive disservice to the idea of K-POP which is innately celebratory of Asian talent.

    I agree - I’ve seen people say “oh but it doesn’t matter because they’re NOT k-pop.” Well… obviously?! But what we’re trying to say is why is this British x SK collaboration even happening in the first place? It’s quite clear to me that these British boys are just profiting off the success and the trend of K-pop, all to make their group seem more cultured than it really is.
