Desert orchid didnt run badly at cheltenham , was placed in 2 champion chases behind pearlyman who on his day was unstoppable over 2 miles, was 11 when 3rd in 1990 gold cup , 11 year old hasnt won gold cup in an age, and obviously at 12 the same thing , 87 king george he went off far too fast and burnt out before straight , simon sherwood was the best jockey on him ,if he ran in 87 gold cup or 88 with sherwood on board he would of won that ,instead of champion chase when colin brown rode him

I was standing by the last fence and had backed ten plus so was gutted but I cheered dessie on and I've never cheered another horse on when mine had already lost before or since. I just knew something special was happening in front of me 🐎

Never heard a cheer like that ever Dessie deserved a gold cup for all he did and he got it ❤

Rode in the race never seen a horse going so easy at top of the hill could have been special

There is no guarantee that Flyingbolt would have beaten Mill House had they met over 3m and the same applies with Dunkirk over 2m and we were robbed of what would have been the greatest Champion 2m chase ever run in 1966 when Dunkirk was fatally killed in the 1965 King George VI Chase having just been passed by Arkle at the third last fence there. Arkle stands alone as the greatest racehorse to walk the planet.

Only two horses have won the National and the Gold Cup. Golden Miller and L'Escargot. Yet if you ask most Irish people they won't know who you're talking about. I remember this and the pride I felt. We had very few National winners in those years.

Dessie was giving panto prince 22lb and still won

Persian War because it won the races was best. Golden cygnet sadly was only a novice. I will never forget that fall at Ayr, never picked up a real shocker.

I would say that racing is, more than any other sport, the one that fans appreciate greatness most. We will roar in a great Irish winner at Cheltenham, just as the crowds do, the odd, British winner in your fair land.

Desert Orchid was one of my Dad's favourite horses. We played this video to him on his final day in the hospital as he succumbed to MND. We got a reaction from him which meant the world. RIP Dad. X

Best horse Edward o Grady ever trained and has trained some super horses 🐴 in his career absolutely would have been a superstar had horses that went on to win the champion hurdle off the bridel in Scotland was cantering all over them sad end we will never know lol

All the plaudits for Desert Orchid. Quite rightly so, he was a magnificent Racehorse. But spare a thought for the runner up, Yahoo. The jockey on Yahoo did nothing wrong, thinking he had the race won approaching the last, on a proven stayer. But for me, the jockey hit the front too soon. Had he waited before asking Yahoo, i think the result would have been different. Just my opinion, but history only records the winners. RIP to them both.

One of the great if not greatest hurdle race finishes ever with two of the all time greats involved , Monksfield and Night Nurse , whip rules are tighter today , it was excessive .

Arguably the most talented hurdler there would ever be had we got to see it. We will never know after the Scottish champion but what he did do till that point was light years better than the rest. RIP champ.

Likely would have won multiple champion hurdles such was that horses ability. Sadly we can only watch these videos and think what might have been.

I refuse to believe that this was a dead-heat. I'm not certain but I'm sure I read somewhere that the photo finish equipment was upgraded the following year. I'd only barely believe that there was short-head or nose in the finish

'Comedy' is my all-time favourite hurdler, to say nothing of being one of the very best ever to grace our racetracks.

The weight arkle gave away no modern day horse could do that .And there are people who think dessie and kauto would have given him a race .

One of my favourite horses, lucky enough to see Morley Street win at Aintree on Grand National day in 1989.

Night Nurse was a top-class hurdler/chaser. He won 35 of his 64 races over hurdles/fences. Night Nurse is the only horse to win the Welsh, English and Scottish Champion Hurdles in the same season.

Arkle gave 3 stone away to Height O' Fashion. That's the reason that the phenomenon known as Arkle had no equal. His stable companion, Flyingbolt, was not far behind him though.

Dawn Run 1986 and Dessie 1989 the noise from the crowd still gives me goose bumps 💌

Flyingbolt was a truly great horse , no doubts , deserves respect and plaudits , but to compare him to Arkle and their respective achievements is pure folly .

Panto Prince still remains the best jumper of a fence I've seen in well over 30yrs.

Backed ten plus each way fifthy each way think he would have won definitely would have been placed no doubt about that 😮

What an absolutely brilliant horse . Would have been a great champion but for terrible fate in Scottish champion hurdle AS A NOVICE. Goes with the ill fated Killiney as a horse we never got to see fulfill their potential 😢
