During crises, when growth slows and interest rates are near zero, negative inflation can cause a deflationary trap, where rising real interest rates suppress economic activity. This can lead to decreased investment, lower consumer spending, and increased unemployment. Ultimately, during severe crises like the 2008 financial crisis, governments strive to raise inflation rates to combat economic stagnation and escape liquidity traps.
