alphacoaster Kugelbahnwerke - Rolling Ball Sculptures - Kinetic Art
Kinetic Sculpture "Solo" (Replica)
This Kinetic Sculpture is a replica of David C. Roy´s „Solo“. I adore Mr Roy‘s work and once I saw the beautiful floating motions of „Solo“ the engineer in me had to find out how it worked mechanically. I couldn’t. There is very little information on the web, guesswork, nothing sufficiant. This only triggered me more. I watched his video probably a million times: www.woodthatworks.com/kinetic-sculptures/solo.html
And then it slowly dawned me… Here‘s my result! The overall apperance and movements are close to the original. All major parts were made on my first try. This piece is spring driven, it has no motor or batteries and it runs for about 6 hours continuously.

alphacoaster #1 - A Rolling Ball Sculpture. Designed, built and bent to shape by Stefan Feismann. This is my first attempt at building a Rolling Ball Sculpture and I am very proud of the outcome. The wealth of varying components and the carefully crafted aesthetic composition make this Ball Sculpture a true piece of Kinetic Art. This choreographed one-taker shows most of the kinetic stunts the ...

Stefan, is the center of gravity of each wheel offset from its hub? It seems that each wheel would need this eccentricity to create its random motion. Great job! Thanks
Hi Dean, thank you. The center is offset. Go watch the original video linked above. It has a bit more detail.
Wonderful!

Excellent work..... I have also build similar model but unable to control the speed of rotation. how you are delaying/making slow rotation of inner anchor?? are you also using magnets in pawl??

Great piece..all the more amazing considering its your first
Amazing! Do you use a CNC to cut your track spaces, etc? They look beautiful.
Thank you, Larry Kay. The spacers are lasercut from my design.
I love this. My mind interprets it as a seagull riding the currents over the ocean.
Unglaublich interessant !! Ein Meisterwerk ! Faszinierend , wie sich die Kugeln auf ganz unterschiedlichste Bahnen begegeben. Ich bin begeistert !!!
Wow - amazing! Congrats Stefan.
Thank you, Tom
Very impressive. Is the sequence always the same or its random?
Hi Barney, der Weg der Bälle ist vorgegeben. Dem Betrachter wird sich die Logik allerdings erst nach längerem Beobachten erschließen.
