Here's the scene where Tony Leung and Kaneshiro's characters jam it out on the Guqin (Kuchin) which is a 7-stringed traditional string instrument with no frets. A very powerful moment in Red Cliff II, Cao Cao - known in popular Chinese folk as a villainous warlord, shows his talent for...poetry! This poem is called "A Short Song" or 短歌行. I don't really agree with some of the translation in the subtitles, but I'm not confidant enough to translate Chinese poetry! So I'll trust the subtitles...for now. From John Woo's Red Cliff, Zhou Yu hears a boy playing flute and investigates. What ensues is some excellent movie scoring and beautiful scenery. You are correct in that the meaning of that verse is to ease woes through drinking, but 杜康 is known as the mythical creator of wine. So taken literally it is "god of wine" in the poetry.

Damn I'm glad to have seen this when I was in the 11th grade and watched other films with Tony leung especially the one where he was seriously famous for in hong kong which was hard boiled then started watching other films before red cliff and hearing his music when I found out he was also a famous singer. Then when shang chi came out and they said he was in i my response...SOLD!!!!

That's just like.. your opinion, man!
It is a very silly adaptation, but the Western audience don't know about the novel or Chinese history so they don't care. However, the portrayal of Zhou Yu is definitely more historically accurate than the novel, which painted him as an antagonist to Zhuge Liang, and unbelievably exaggerated his involvement in the battle of Red Cliff. Liu Bei just waited until the right moment and stole Jing Zhou.
General Zhou You was really into music during the Han dynasty. Though he lost good friends during the three kingdoms war. He never lost himself.
