"Saddle hunters go in light and come out heavy"
Joe and Scott are whitetail bow hunting fanatics.
We've both been chasing whitetails with our bows here in New York for 40 years. We've learned that being mobile and the first time in a virgin set is one of the best ways to out fox mature bucks. Saddle hunting helps us hunt a new spot every sit.
Scott's a 30 veteran arborist tree climbing professional. There's no substitute for experience , and we enjoy to continually learn and share what we've learned with others who share our passion. We believe the only limit to getting into the best position to kill a buck from a tree, is the tree and our imagination.
We hope our page helps others benefit from what we do , our experience , and our conversations on the Subject of Deer hunting, saddle hunting , climbing etc.
We will continue to try to bring interesting tips and content to the hunting public.
Feel free to ask questions and comment.
Best of luck !!!!

Great video; just what I needed to see! I never really wanted a mechanical device, but thought the device + rope backup made sense (2 different methods) for redundancy. How would you do a 2nd rope backup...a different knot with more wraps, etc??? I'll be one-sticking/40' rope, and maybe 2 tether also.
Really appreciate the videos especially from a safety first stand point. For me, my reservation with this technique would be I would be concerned bc things can and do go wrong, when tying to the tether and throwing the rope over the branch i would be tied to a short rope that would not reach the ground. If something would happen to the main rope ( weight of the rope pulled it back over my main anchor) and fall to the ground that would be not good. I guess though if I wanted to eliminate that highly unlikely scenario, before making the transfer, I could tie the one side of the main rope to myself so it could go to the ground.
This is America, the world most richest country and high tech on Earth. Why create such a suffering and misery climbing. Lol
Dude I love that you are so innovative in trying to come up with the absolute SAFEST way for guys and gals to ascend and descend trees. I think like most, when I transitioned over to saddle hunting, my main goal was to leave all the heavy climbers and other heavy equipment at the house. I'm now 58 years young, need both knees replaced and just got past having my bicep reattached to my forearm...results from a one stick fall. All that being said, you taught me a new, safety way of ascending and descending my selected trees with the SRT method. I added an additional foot ascending strap because of the weakness in my legs and knees but that was the ticket to help me ascending. My rig now is so lite that most of the time I think I have left something at the truck. I truly think the more guys that subscribe to your channel will learn to transition from climbers and all other heavy equipment technics to the SRT method and it's safty . Thank you Brother for all you do to help others reduce weight and increase safety for all of us. After all, we owe it to our family's to be as safe as possible! Thanks again and God Bless from Georgia
@@hunter-c6739 Thankyou Bud , appreciate the support ! That’s the plan make it safe and easy enough that everyone can do it . No reason to climb a tree in fear of falling and getting hurt or worse.
@NYSaddleHunter Yep. My fall tucked! But thankfully I was already a rope guy. That fall, and you systems are what challenged me to go just SRT. Safest I have ever felt climbing.
Enjoyed your video on the Lean Ascent. Assuming you used it this past hunting season what are your overall thoughts?Looking to get something like it. Considering the Panther, the Broadside and the Lean Ascent.
@@iaincrichton1890 only got out twice with it. My over all is it needs to be Quieter, particularly the tubes which house the cable . They rattle quite a bit when climbing. I e heard guys have stealthier stripped the inner tubes some even sprayed expanding foam in them sliding the cable back n forth before the foam sets up to create a quieter chamber . Other than noise not a bad little climbing platform that cams over. If all you hunt is telephone pole size trees 8” to 20” than it’s a good fit
Good morning I believe you're explaining a poor man's SRT 4 years ago what's really interesting is I paid attention to your extension pole underneath your deer mount rack switch are a fantastic interesting you have that extension pole and it's kind of the same setup that jrb I guess it is is advertising about the Maverick Paul the same type hook on it just interesting you guys use the word redundancy and John's always using that too I wondered if you taught him or if he taught you or just in tree climbing it is all normal terms
@@frankrkovilaritchjr6404 Hey Frank , we’ve had a lot of influence over the yrs. Did we invent it , No ! I’ve been climbing trees in Tree care close to 40 yrs . So when Joe and I started this channel yrs ago yes we were some of the first to introduce this climbing style ( DRT , SRT ) and its application to the hunting industry. Since then there’s been lots of guys regurgitating the same thing to a degree . I tend to keep things simple ( KISS ) it’s what’s served me well and kept me safe all these years . There’s no substitute for experience. I wanted to create an easy/ safe system that a majority of hunters can use given their age, weight , level of athleticism or physical ailment that they can succeed at . The Half-line System Has achieved just that ! Again we didn’t create SRT. However we did create the application of how we can girth hitch our rope from the ground using half the rope we used to carry In conjunction with a determined length of paracord and our attachments we can now install it from the ground . We made a video using the extension pole to install our paracords 5 yrs ago . It was meant to show another option. It’s not something we use . I encourage people to perfect the throwball method because it opens more opportunities . And makes you a more mobile unit. Less is more ! As far as redundancy goes it’s something we both incorporate into our systems. As different as our systems are . They’re both built with redundancy and your safety in mind . JRB has put his own spin on rope climbing by creating a series of complex rope hitches that mimic the action of a mechanical hitch . Rope hitches are a time tested method but you cannot compete with the smoothness of mechanicals working in unison like the Vergo and CT Quickroll . You also cannot descend on a hitch without it feeling rather clunky and building excessive heat that will degrade both rope and hitch over time . These are all things I’ve learned , witnessed firsthand and overcame through a process of elimination. As I said I’ve relied on my yrs of experience keeping myself safe . Now my job is to educate and show you a way to keep yourself safe !!!
Hay Scotty this also would be a great way too climb two tether style and use the half line as your main tether and another tether for your foot then you basically could climb any tree on a mobile style hunt without throwing a throw ball and you would go in woods with a few pounds, do you agree with what im thinking Scott, then obviously on way down you could repell down👊?
I’ve tried it , it’s not my go to but it definitely is an option. So is one sticking . The hunting options are as individual as are Bow Brands . You as an individual have to explore each one til you find the perfect fit . Or even have several . There is no end all be all way to hunt . The more tools in your arsenal, the more your prepared for any given situation. Even with my system, You’ll never hear me say it’s the best way to kill deer . I believe it’s the safest , one of the lightest and definitely quietest and fastest ( having preset installed ) ways into your tree period ! I have a career of 40 yrs of climbing trees and over 40 hunting , to hang my hat on . I’ve done everything imaginable to get up a tree some not so safe ( youth ) To being completely safe . Will two tether get it done Yes . And using the Halfline as your primary makes good sense. Climbing any tree without using a line from ground to destination is not being completely safe !!! The decision is yours !!!
My man I've been bow hunting since I was 16 years old so I think I know what I'm doing. You must be the greatest hunter man as ever known or just a asshole who likes to think he is better than everyone else. Have a nice life and go back to being better than everyone else.
I’ve been climbing in the tree business more than thirty-five years and have taken climbing classes all over the country. This tutorial is right there on the level of professional instructors in the climbing industry. Compliments from a thirty-five year climber.
@@jrstrange123 thanks brother 👍. Same ! Climbed for 30+ yrs in Tree Care . Still involved in the business coming up on my 38th yr, At age 60 . Wanted to bring a common sense approach to hunters from age old proven practices that have been keeping tree climbers safe for yrs !!!
I would like a video describing the method you use combined with srt, when hunting new trees all the time
I want to see a full hunt using drt/srt with a harvest. You guys just selling stuff to people who dont know how to find deer. Deer don’t hang out by big nice trees to swing around in. Gotta get in the thick crap where there are tiny trees and none usually are straight. I suppose it keeps a majority of people away from the good spots, but still…
@@2cthetruth where you from , what state do you hunt . You got anything to back all this bullshit up or you just like running your mouth
Are you serious? I’m asking YOU to prove “YOUR” system can be used where deer frequent, and you’re getting defensive telling me that everything I’m saying is shit? WTF is wrong with you? You are obviously just trying to sell crap to ignorant hunters. Just because you can climb a perfectly straight tree in your back yard or the middle of some hardwoods doesn’t mean the method is useful for getting deer. Fact are facts. Deer do not hang out in the drt/srt tree zone…aka open woods. The only place this might be remotely useful is the edges of fields and even then it’s hard to find good trees without a million branches. Dont get mad at me for bringing facts and helping folks make an informed decision. This equipment isn’t cheap pal. Most people would be better off one sticking in a small stand or saddle.
@@2cthetruth you are seriously confused. You keep making the point about straight trunk trees. Thats the Mobile Safety System used for climbing Tree Stands of stick climbing and it’s purpose is to keep the climber safe in the event something happens to the climber or if a stick comes off the tree , which happens more than you know based on the amount of guys who make the switch every yr. My Half-line system will work in any scenario where there’s a limb , stub even sucker limbs . Big and small trees whether it’s thick or semi thick to open timber . Whatever the user prefers . I hunt mostly in thick terrain. Mostly Oak & Laurel thickets and hardwood in brushy bottoms. As far as swamps go I can get into anything that will afford me a few holes for shot opportunities. Those places are far and few where I live . Here in Southeastern NY we mostly hunt mountains and look for thick cover amount the hardwoods. And as I said this system works just fine in these situations. Of the hundreds of the halfline systems I’ve sold and Mobile Systems the majority of feedback I get has been amazing. It’s made a huge impact for the hunters who’ve purchased them. If you don’t believe, o don’t know what else to tell you . Your obviously way to great of a hunter to be trolling here
I’m sorry, but you didn’t address anything. Make a hunting video. Show deer while you are in your srt/drt/ half line/ quarter line/ strait line method tree. Thanks
Hay Scott if I only usually go 15 to 18 ft a 30 ft rope should be all I need right?
@@outdoorsman9384 kind of depends on what system your using . Mobile Safety System Your advancing your girth hitch above you as you advance up the tree if you were using a climbing tree stand , sticks , one stick. Then you can get away with having a shorter length . if 20 ‘ is your max heigh you’ll have plenty of rope left to belay down on . In regards to the Half-line your governed by what the tree your climbing gives you. If it’s the tree you have to be in the only limb could be 15 ‘ or could be 35’ that’s why I opt for carrying 40’ and it’s still compact enough to fit in a dump pouch . Even though my crotch height may be 30+ feet , I may be only 15 , 20 even lower depending on my surroundings for cover . That could be additional trunks , suckers , vines or the trunk could be extremely large offering me concealment. I hunt the Appalachian chain in the south east of NY which offers a lot of diversity in the trees I hang in
@NYSaddleHunter good explanation Scott keep thinking about buying half line kit but I'm always hunting mobile and sign dictates the ambush, so hard decision for me, I climb drt with just a rope for my preset spots. Scott if you could ever figure out how we could choose any tree with are srt kit with out throw ball I would be all over it like white on 🍚 rice. Your the master painter 🎨 Scott I'm hoping you surprise us soon with this phenomenon 💡 idea
You can’t choose any tree…matter of fact, the trees you can use are probably nowhere near any deer! Good luck and have a Merry Christmas and Happy new year.
Love my 40 foot Sterling 9mm line & the Quick-roll/Trango Vergo combination. A little nicer & more compact & easier to work with than the 9.5mm 75 foot coil I purchased the year b4. 3 years ago I couldn’t see myself doing SRT while hunting but the CT Quick-roll is something that changed things & won me over.
This is the best video I've viewed on how to safely and efficiently climb trees for hunting! The explanations are very clear and concise. No need to wade through alot of fluff and extraneous content that has no value. Please keep up the absolutely excellent teaching that you're doing here!
Srt/drt is really impractical. The trees you guys climb are in open hardwoods…where the deer are not. I have spots all over and I can’t think of one location I have where there is a big prefect tree with a perfect crotch that is where deer frequent…big ones no way. Looks neat but totally impractical. One stick is the only method that makes sense. Good luck 👍
@@2cthetruth I don’t hunt open hardwoods. Impractical, You’re seriously lacking common sense. If you don’t like it . Keep going . Don’t waste everyone’s time with your ignorance. Keep doing what your doing
Your reply is the only thing lacking common sense. I get it, you are trying to get a business going, but it is impractical. Deer don’t hang around open timber.
Show us some areas you hunt. The actual trees and actual deer frequenting those trees. You can’t!
A field edge is the only exemption and even then it has to be a tree that is straight with a nice crotch…

That's a great idea
What's that on your teather, on the portion touching the tree/choking the tree? Some sorta rubber protectant?
Dude Thank you so much. You have taught me such a better way of acsending my tree than one sticking. I am currently recovering from having my bicep reattached to my forearm from a one stick slip. Set the stick on what I thought was a solid knot on the tree, wasn't so and the knot broke at full weight ,reached for the tree which snatched from my grasp resulting in the injury. SRT is so much easier and safer in my opinion. Lookin' forward to many more seasons with your technique! Thanks
@@hunter-c6739 ouch !!! sorry to hear . Rehab the arm . Now you’ll be better equipped, I get alot of one stickers who make the switch fully or tandem the two systems. I hunted this whole season using my one stick as my primary platform. I love the ease and quickness of setting up rock solid . It also serves me well setting cameras 12’ high with my 3step aider . I sure enjoy all the videos you guys have made. I live on the west coast, land of the conifers, so I haven't had a good opportunity to saddle hunt. Also, being old and broken makes doing most things much more difficult than it should be. However, because of, and with the assistance of your videos, I was able to learn how to climb with ropes, and that led me to learn a lot about rope rescue and other things. It was a real rabbit hole of discovery for me. Even after it became clear that my age and abilities to do much in the way of climbing are seriously limited, I now have the tools, skills, and ability to simply hoist myself into the trees if I need to. I feel like I owe you guys a lot for all the things I have learned from you.
@@340wbymag Thankyou much appreciated !!! Designing a system like the Half-line was based entirely upon the principles for hunters to safely and efficiently reach heights to effectively hunt no matter their physical limitations within reason. Pretty much just the bottom half of any climbing tree stand. The issue is when you get to tree limbs, then what ? That was the entire sell point of climbing sticks, to work around tree limbs
@@chuckparson6712 there is no one system that works on every tree . This seems to take a simple concept (using the proven quicklink) and turns it into something more complex. I feel like you tried to resolve a problem that doesn't exist and in doing so, created more potential problems.
I bought into the drt system a few years back when that was "the thing" . I practiced it in the off season until i was proficient. it was a huge waste of time. These climbing systems are good for the same trees that climbers are good in. Your hunting for a good tree not were u need to be. Look how big that tree hes climbing alot of video's there climbing trees that size. Try drt or srt in a basketball sized oak aside from hanging off like tarzan that tree is going to shake and make so much noise every critter will be running out of this area. If climbing sticks arent an option your better off getting climbing spurs there is a pretty steep learning curve for some while others pick it right up.

absolutley not. way too big, way too heavy, way too much metal. My polymer ring of steps is none of those things and makes 360 shot opportunities much easier. I can keep the tree between me and the deer no matter where he comes in.
