Jerry West (The logo), Dr. J (changed how basketball was played), Magic Johnson & Larry Bird (each get a side of the head ... They LITERALLY saved the NBA), Michael Jordan (helping bring the NBA to global recognition, as well as, the shoe deals that came after). I would put these people on the NBA Mt. Rushmore for what they did for the NBA.

I saw him on the NY Nets many times. I saw him at a clinic at Nassau Community College in 1979. Doc was a clinic. I grew up close to where he grew up. Everybody loved the guy. He was always kind to children and everybody. He's one of a kind and he revelutuonized the game.

I am witness to the most spectacular IN-GAME dunk in basketball history. It was performed by Julius Erving in the 1972 NBA-ABA all-star game (not the dunk contest). I was 13 years old and a big basketball fan. I had just come in the house on a weekend afternoon. I plopped down in front of our black and white TV. I found the NBA-ABA all-star game on UHF. Oh yeah! Wilt, Pearl, Oscar Robertson, Mel Daniels, Rick Barry, Nate Archibald, Havlicek, etc. Within five minutes of settling down, I saw this skinny guy, with an afro, who I didn't know, driving the length of the court. He was dribbling through everybody. Behind his back/between his legs. Just shaking the whole NBA squad. Then, with defenders still in tow, and I didn't know this could happen, THE GUY TOOK OFF FROM THE FOUL LINE. When he got to the basket, his head was at rim level. He slammed the ball through the floor. I was in shock. They replayed the dunk about five times (sometimes in slow motion). The Doctor's toe was about six inches inside the foul line on take-off. It looked like he was still rising when he got to the rim. Frankly. It seemed extraterrestrial. I've never seen another dunk like it. Jordan, Vince, Dominique, Lebron, Giannis--nobody has ever in-game dunked like that. It wasn't a show-off dunk, either. Just the best way, in the Doctor's mind, to score in that situation, in a very hot game (the NBA won by 2). Over the next 40-plus years, I never met another person who saw that dunk. Then I found an article on the internet discussing that game and devoting a lot of space to "Dr. J's mind boggling dunk". The article stated that the play began (this I did not recall) when Julius intercepted Paul Silas's inbound pass. Great defense, then mad handles, followed by insane finish. Then, on my 54th(?) birthday, I went to Dr. J's book signing in Philly, and I asked him about the dunk. He said, "Yupp! Big O and Arrrchie Claaaark!" They were his victims on the play. Me: "I SAW THAT DUNK!" I was 13 again. The Doctor just grinned. Incidentally, I found the game on RUclips; minus the fourth quarter when the dunk happened. My guess: Someone from the NBA saw the dunk and ordered the fourth quarter game tape to be destroyed. It makes sense. How can the NBA claim to be the best basketball league in the world, but the ABA has "this guy"? The NBA couldn't afford for people to see that dunk on the six o'clock news. Thus, the world was deprived of the Dr. J's most exciting play ever and the most spectacular in-game dunk (as far as I know) in basketball history.

How many people know that Dr J is the only player post 1970 with 30000p/10000r/5000as/2000st and 2000bl..all these while he played only 34 min pg and got just 17 fg attempts while in the NBA..Also has anyone realized that all the highlight available are from a tiny percent of his games , mostly playoffs, finals and all star games..one can easily argue that according to his standard 5/6 highlights per game in the big stage that we miss something in the area of 5000 highlights...that is more than 50000 sec or over 12hours of continue highlight reel 10 seconds each! here this is just the 82 finals at age 32..ruclips.net/video/4Cxdb9OBwFI/видео.html and here the all star game mvp in 1983..ruclips.net/video/5s--ckJ4idM/видео.html have you ever seen anyone else generating highlights so effortlessly as Doc did... and here as a 21 y old rookie in Aba vs Nba all stars with only 13 min playtime and missing the 4 th quarter and the famous in game from the free throw line dunk on Oscar: ruclips.net/video/BXpPIjjc0h0/видео.html

He is the reason we have high flyers, and dunkers, and athletes who walk in humbleness and style and class. he changed the NBA before larry and magic and michael. the reason I love basketball is because of Dr. J. don't love the game anymore. These young players don't have the class or love of basketball and its passion. We saw Dr. J play with compassion and Love of the game .

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Bird and Magic might have saved the nba, but the Doctor kept it floating long enough for them to let it shine. 1983 Philadelphia 76ers, the pinnacle of a legend. Thank you Doctor J, Magic, and Larry Legend for making me love basketball as a young kid. I mean it, thank you!!!!

I remember this came out when I was in 7th grade in the summer time. The 2012-13 season exactly 30 years after the 76ers championship season. That intro where Doc puts his hand over the camera still gets me till this day. I was a huge Dr.J fan and could palm a basketball in 7th grade and wanted to do all of his moves. A lot of cats gave me heat because I used to tell them Doc was better than Lebron and Jordan😂. Good days man, I watched every bit of Dr. J history that I could. He’s a legend

Doc is my favorite athlete of all time. All the great things he was have been thoroughly documented I won’t bother repeating. The one thing I want to say is that I’ve seen documentaries on several players from his era and a little before him. Black guys. Like Wilt, Oscar, Doc, Kareem, Russell etc. I noticed how well spoken and respectful these men are. How even though they had humble beginnings in tough circumstances their families were proud and disciplined and distinguished. They dressed well. They are INTERESTING. I see the way players are today. Purposely trying to speak ignorantly. Trying to act ghetto. Trying to act thuggish and street. It’s unfortunate.

The assassination of MLK Jr. was April 1968. Most young people can’t imagine what people of color growing up in the 50’s & 60’s was like. Until 1950, there were no black professional basketball players. So for Julius Erving to start playing at the Salvation Army at age 11 in 1962 paved a way for other generations. Julius Erving is a legend in the way he played and his communication skills to help inspire others to become the best at whatever they wanted to accomplish. Like a parent, he is elated when the younger generations of basketball players accomplish greater success than the previous players. That’s what legends are for. Greetings from Virginia USA 🇺🇸
