    I live in the UK. Despite many hours spent on my laptop and numerous email enquiries I have failed to find a “hearing care professional” who practices real ear measurements in hearing aid setup. Best response I have had “it’s on my wish list”. I have Oticon More aids which have been set up by trial and error. Some of the error could me my description or the suppliers interpretation. Oticon are impossible to contact, pay your money and your on your own.

    Yeah, most people with a hearing aid already know that. What I was hoping the video would tell me was how the processor cuts out background noise. How transients are handled, how the hearing aid protects the wearer from loud noises and probably other things we don't know about even when we've been wearing hearing aids for some time. I was sadly disappointed. This video is a marketing video.

    Most people who should have hearing aids don’t get hearing aids simply because the price is too high. Hearing aids should and could be less than $500. The regulatory body the FDA keeps the price artificially high. The FDA PROTECTING PUBLIC HEALTH BY INSURING THE SAFETY, efficacy, security. But they do not ensure that hearing aids and hearing care is affordable. Thus the greatest damage is to people who don’t have hearing aids or hearing care. Modern hearing aids can now be made with build in care and low cost for everyone.

    It was very important to me to treat my mild to moderate hearing loss as early as possible as i am in so many high risk medical conditions. Treating my hearing loss is one of the more manageable health issues i have been diagnosed with. Mild hearing loss and dementia affects everyone in my immediate family. I also have been diagnosed with tinnitus, aortic abnormalities, high blood pressure diabetes and acute sleep apnea. Mu audiologist is highly qualified and is quick to address my concerns with my hearing loss and tinnitus and i feel very fortunate to have him addressing my hearing issues.

    The thing that puzzles me is background noise in one situation is not background noise in another. For instance an auto mechanic needs to hear what may be perceived as background noise by a chip. Defining background noise is a tall order that each situation dictates. I have severe hearing loss and tried hearing aids and found them more irritating than I cared for but it may be time to see what is if a suitable aids is out there now.

    • @dondgc2298
      @dondgc2298 3 месяца назад

      Two thoughts. First, I think you’re questioning the value of hearing aids because of one unusual and very specific use case. Second, if you have severe hearing loss, you really should give hearing aids another shot. And if you do, commit to using them every day for a couple of weeks so you get used to them. I think - and hope - they will make a real difference in your quality of life. Just don’t believe the hype- background noise isn’t going to disappear and the “crowded restaurant” and “cocktail party” scenarios are real issues. But in almost all other situations you will find your hearing aids to be a big plus. Just my thoughts…

    I have Oticon Real. I keep hearing about boosting those I want to hear and reducing those I don’t. I do not get that. The people at the table sound muted, while the background noise is amplified. I can tell what the conversation is with people sitting way over the other side of the room. I’ve had this result with Oticon More, Own and now Real.

    I am a drummer, and just recently at the age of 71 and now afflicted with severe tinnitus and hearing loss and high frequencies. I need something to deal with the tinnitus as well as best as possible. However, my family reminded me that EMF‘s are a concern with Bluetooth hearing aids, so can you even get hearing aids without Bluetooth? And of course if you do, you’re not gonna have any control of your settings.

      Is there any place in your environment that is not inundated with EMF from Bluetooth devices, wifi hotspots, FM radio signals, as well as the ever present low energy electromagnetic wavelengths left over from the original big-bang which are audible as static at the lower end of the radio band? Yes some early cellphones put out too much energy from their antennae. No, not every risk someone might imagine becomes real with the imagining.

    I investigated OTC hearing aids, even the new Rx types now on the market, but after having my hearing test results (moderate in one ear/severe in the other) and the various public conditions I am in during the week I realized I needed ones from my audiologist to ensure proper fit and performance. I'm willing to spend the higher cost to ensure maximum performance, and the follow-up for adjustments and even substitutions if needed that are part of the service. I just ordered them this past week and am looking forward to their delivery.

    I know that there are android lovers and Apple lovers. Bluetooth has definitely been a game changer for me. It seems to connect my iPhone and iPad seamlessly. It’s a great improvement to be able to hear speech through both ears. It provides a lot more clarity for speech. I will have to upgrade my Apple Watch to be able to use some features. I am really new to all this technology and I still get flustered every time my iPhone rings and figuring out what device to answer.

    I am in so many high risk groups,deciding to treat my hearing loss with hearing aids was a no brainer. Since 1974, Four members of my immediate family developed dementia and three had untreated hearing loss. Three have had heart murmurs. Two suffered from, obesity , type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Three smoked. One had treatment resistant depression. Three hadn’t graduated from high school. Since most of my immediate family lived through their 90%, I plan to be in the category where less people develop dementia.

    The ability to make changes to suit the client makes it easier to improve one’s performance and satisfaction with hearing aid use. Hearing aids are not like eyeglasses. Each individual hearing loss is unique. I doubt that a cookie cutter OTC device would work well for me. Also, i am not geeky enough to make optimal changes to manufacturer’s specifications. I had to watch 4 different RUclips videos to be able program my Airpod Pros. I am more comfortable with assistance of a trained professional.
