Wow! One of my viola friends is always saying that fiddling on viola is too difficult....This proves otherwise. Besides, if Natalie Haas can do it on cello, violas have no excuse. Btw, if you ever have the chance to meet and jam with Alasdair and Natalie....you won't regret it.

This is REALLY interesting. I like how the three separate improvisations led to the formation of a group -- a composition, and then to the 'chorus' at the end. More please!

I think this performance is really terrific, a lot more aggressive than the La Salle performance I have been listening to. Please note that I am not a musician, and this is just an amateur listener trying to make sense out of a pretty unusual piece.

When the principal voice is marked, it doesn't mean the secondary voices disappear. I had trouble hearing those voices. ppp, pp, p all depend on the hall and its acoustics. Turning up the volume, I couldn't make out anything in ppp. Dynamics are relative to acoustics. The passage 'sempre ppp and without accentuations' sounded sul pont., which it is not. The 'calando' at 153 was barely noticeable (this and the measure before are two of the most beautiful in the entire work - why rush through them?). The 'agitato' following this is an ostinato, with the lead in the violin. The rhythm was not clear. Near the opening, the 'poco a poco accel. e cresc.' is effective only if it starts slowly enough so one can hear the 'accel.' I couldn't. (also the second time around.) There are passages reminiscent of romanticism, measure 57, for instance. Starting 'mf' with cresc. I think these and other lyrical moments can be brought out. Not all pauses (') should be created equal. I enjoyed your performance for its commitment.

I am enchanted! This is not a single-track interpretation, but rather it shows even the late Schönberg still struggling between expression and abstraction. How beautiful these melodies are! Thank you for this.
