I’m literally just some girl on this oversaturated platform trying to develop a community of people who also love movies/tv shows. I like posting video essays, mostly. So, let’s over analyze some cool stuff together! 🖤
The Haunting Love Story of BLY MANOR | VIDEO ESSAY
This is a video essay for all you Flanagan fans! Flanagan is one of the best show runners out there. With shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Haunting of Hill House, and Midnight Mass (all on Netflix) it's no wonder why audiences can't get enough. Today we deep dive in this video essay on Bly Manor, specifically. The House is haunted with spirits and love, both of which are deeply interconnected throughout the story. I want to give this show all the glory it deserves. If you haven't seen my Hill House video essay, check it out! This is a long video and I hope you guys just settle down and let it lull you into an ASMR video sleep. lol

It Follows (2015) is such a great movie, so why not digest it in short form through video essay? This movie was during a time where movies like “Neon Demon” and the like were coming out. We were really getting experimental with horror in this time frame. We saw a more artistic side to things back then. In this video I dive into what makes It Follows so scary. Truly scary. Existential crisis sca...

This is a (video essay) look at the meaning of horror throughout the decades. We do a deep dive (and analysis) into what horror is trying to convey throughout the last six decades. Times have changed so much with technology, lifestyles, political movements. I want to understand exactly how horror plays into showing us the state of the America during each decade. Movies like: Childs Play, Get Ou...

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE: A Retrospective Deep Dive| VIDEO ESSAY

The Haunting of Hill House is just one of many Mike Flanagan TV shows on Netflix about ghosts and trauma. He also has Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Midnight Club. All of which I recommend. In this video I breakdown and explain my favorite work: the Haunting of Hill House. I want to walk you through the intricate details along with theories about the s...

SMILE 2: A descent into MADNESS | REVIEW & EXPLAINED
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
SMILE 2 totally took me by surprise (just like TALK TO ME and THE SUBSTANCE did when I saw them) and let me explain (and review) why. Parker Finn did a very mediocre job with the first SMILE movie. But SMILE 2 really took him from meh to amazing horror director. Naomi Scott was also, truly, a master of her craft. Blew me away. Let's talk about the ending too! In this video I explain the plot of...

What do SMILE and THIRTEEN GHOSTS have in common? | A CRITIQUE
Просмотров 416Месяц назад
Is SMILE too obvious in its message? In this breakdown (explain), I explore how the film delivers its themes with a heavy hand, leaving little room for subtlety. From borrowed elements to on-the-nose storytelling, I break down why SMILE misses the mark on nuance. Watch to see how the movie stacks up against other horror hits and whether it truly delivers the scares and symbolism it promises. Li...
Great points in this. I never thought of Victorine as sloth as she’s so obsessed with work, but you convinced me. She wants all the esteem without the hard work and effort that’s required for a trial like hers. I did disagree with one point though. I thought Tamerlane was more representative of pride. She’s unwilling to tell her husband that she needs him because of her pride. She thinks of herself as better than her other siblings because she was born of their Dad’s first marriage. She’s obsessed with building her ‘brand’ which is her curated version of self. To the point that she pays for women to pretend to be her with her husband while she watches and gets off on seeing that idealised reflection of herself. She was also killed by shards of mirror, killed by her reflected and shattered pride after messing up on stage in front of everyone to the point of embarrassing herself. I also think it makes more sense that Roderick and Madeline are greed. They’re willing to sacrifice anything to get what they want. They don’t just want to be rich and powerful, they want to be the most rich and powerful. Their riches are never enough, despite all the death they cause with the drug they produce. The opioid they produce is also a good nod to their greed as they’ve created this addictive substance that they’ve put out into the world which addicts can’t get enough of. Roderick marries his wife Juno because she takes more of these pills everyday than is possible for any other person without dying. He’s attracted to that greed, and his own greed means he has to claim her and his family as his own possessions. He calls his wife his own Frankenstein’s monster. I think there’s even a point where Dupin asks him something like ‘when was it ever going to be enough?’ And Roderick responds by saying something like ‘there’s no such thing’. There is no enough for him, nor for Madeline. She’s not even content with the years of her life she has. She’s obsessed with immortality because she wants more, more life, more wealth, more power. Plus the references to Madeline also as this Egyptian queen and her down in the basement surrounded by all their precious things where Roderick plans to in tomb them both. Like old Pharos would put all their riches in their tombs. Even in death he still wants it’s all. Just my take. No more valid than yours!
Bravo 👏🏻
🙌❤️❤️
That's crazy lol ❤
Can’t wait to watch you get big!! This was such a joy to listen to!
Oh my god this was amazing! Loved how you both recapoed us through the show and how delicately but thoughtfully you analyzed the text... I mean. There is also wrt Miles and Peter a predarory side of things, the whole Hurt People Hurt People in a different font to Viola's. But that is, I feel, one of the parts I wish had gotten more time to breathe and be dxpanded upon, because when we finally got Peter's backstory it felt kinda rushed? So much was happening and being revealed at once I couldn't even feel the weight of the sudden CSA mention till it later hit me like a truck But I do cherish this show best among the Flannagan shows on Netflix, like... So much pain and so much loss but we had Dani and Jamie to hold us through it all
A new Bly Manor video essay?? Christmas came early!!!

just finished this vid now (watched on 1.25x speed.) such a beautiful analysis and break down of what death and ghosts mean for people, equally as good as your hill house one. after watching this in 2020, i am still nowhere near over dani and jamie 😢 they really buried their gays fr
Brilliant video
Thank you!
Спасибо за точный обзор. 9.30 Скульптура. Подскажите, пожалуйста, отсылку. Спасибо.
A24 had a special screening in Utah specifically for Mormons and Ex-Mormons which was shown in two theaters, one where you entered through a door labled "belief" and one labeled "disbelief". They also pumped in blueberry scent during the scene in the living room, that's some incredible marketing.
Empty swimming pools are a staple of J.G. Ballard's work - they indicate the emptiness of modern Western culture. The Neon Demon is very similar to Mulholland Falls - the "naivete" of the protagonist is a need to be reprogrammed following the emptiness of her previous existence. As Hollywood is a cult, her previous empty existence leads her to want to join - she desires death, preferably of her identity instead of her body. Jesse's existence prior to joining the fashion industry was a nightmare, so she chose the "evil" nightmare over her previous "good" nightmare. Keanu Reeves is sensible for this movie, as more than any other actor he's thought to be desiring of reprogramming. Actors avoid our own dystopic reality by pretending to be living in some other reality entirely.
I find it interesting because in both versions of the haunting of Hill House is nothing like the original book at all I think the closest version that could come was the 1960s version lol. The truth is the house is never haunted not really, just all the tragedy and the negativity of what it happened on its grounds to its owners had slipped into the foundation of the house, and the house was a lot more at peace when they’re actually wasn’t anyone living there? lol.
Agreed. The house was settled when no one lived there lol
I think you'd like Room 1408, if you haven't seen it yet
I've seen it and I LOVE it!
I loved this series but could never rewatch it, my heart broke too much for everyone especially Nell and Luke 😭
Watching this show was a little surreal to me. My name is Luke. I was a troubled kid and young adult with OCD. I had a massive crisis on psychedelics in 2006. It involved experiences that are hard to put into words, and also hallucinations and the terror that I was dying. The OCD turned into a monster. But I was recovering well from everything until my doctor addicted me to benzodiazepines a year later, bogging down the emotional processing of everything, which have made the ordeal much longer and way more complicated, such that it has lasted even to this day. After the crisis, I have never seen the world the same way again, in 18 years. I eventually went to rehab and got clean. I was also 39 years old when the show came out, exactly Steven's age. I was 13 in 1992, during the scenes with the children, and am the oldest in my family. So watching the show was kind of like watching myself onscreen. Although fortunately my family is very close and loving, and has always been supportive of me through my struggles, even if they don't understand what I have been going through.
I love your analysis, i remember a creator mentioned who how ambiguous the movie felt the whole time. You didn't know if she actually resurrected or if that's what she WISHED it happened. Almost like an answer to her prayers, a sign of God
I’ve watched one review since posting. I was so excited to hear what others thought. Only to hear a lot of my thoughts echoed back to me lol. I watched Mista GGs review literally right after posting and he felt the same way. I kept waiting for Paxton to say something noteworthy about her feelings towards what she learned. I felt like it would tie the message together. Between the lack of an ending monologue and the butterfly I def thought “oh yeah, we’re supposed to figure this out ourselves” 🤪
I have watched thsi show a million times and somehow never connected the basement ghost with the ghost that destroys Shirley’s forever home. And the dogs are a reference to the book!
Gonna have to read the books. I have heard mixed reviews, though lol. Most said the show was better.
But you do meet Theo. She’s literally one of the first two characters you meet. Steven says her name while she’s on screen and she has the second line of the entire show (outside of the prologue). I’m still going to watch despite this because I love the show.
Second person to let me know that I missed it! GREAT EYE! 🥳 Thanks for watching!❤️
This movie have produced a bunch of Mormon videos an ex Mormon videos. I watched one video when they where pissed because the sisters talked about 🌽. Lol. A real mormon would never talk about 🌽& condoms of course. I think they was suppose to beLSD Mormons?
Yeah they’re LDS! They act like Mormons aren’t people with autonomy. Of course it’s not sanctioned by the church that they do those things lol! They are woefully misinformed if they think Mormons don’t chit chat and indulge in sinfully things. Some of the most sexually repressed humans in the damn world are devoted Christian’s. And that NEED for unholy stuff is very apparent lol! 😂😂
Does that kind of contraceptive exist ?
Yes, it usually goes into your arm. I think its effective for 2-3 years.
Yes! But I honestly did not think twice about it being a contraceptive device before he said something lol. I was convinced she was an NPC for a sec.
The 24/7 news cycle started after 9/11, not in the 80s. Great video.
Thank you for watching! 🙏
I've been hearing High praise for Grant. Possibly his best in years. Hope he gets some award buzz!!! Amazing review ❤
He did a spectacular job. Of course it's so different for him and now I think he HAS to do more horror lol.
@jennasmovielobby absolutely agree 💯👍🏻 my lady ☺️
Good news, he got a Golden Globe nomination. 👍
the fart sound made me stop watching after less than 5 minutes. it's irritating and kind of tasteless to talk about death and add a fart like it's funny. leave it out and I will watch everything else you post 🥰
this series is pure magic. I got goosebumps reliving all the plots.
Such an amazing show. Best of Flanagans work.
When the movie came out the critics panned it as a flashy movie with no substance. I was like, “What are y’all talking about?” Critics miss the point also many times. This movie absolutely rocks and the music is magical and trippy. Have an edible for a second watch. Trust me on that one

The only horror movie that I cried, the grief and sadness was all engulfing
It chokes you. This show has done such a good job with how is portrays life. Ugh.
Aaand now it’s time for my millionth rewatch haha
😂 if it wasn’t so emotionally taxing I would have rewatched immediately. It’s totally worth revisiting every year though tbh 🍿
Oh and another thing -- Flanagan made sure viewers saw that no matter what you do to try to protect your children from the world it is pointless and you serve them better by arming them with the skills they need to protect themselves. In the case of the Crane's they all grew up traumatized and ill-equipped to face their own struggles and all made giant messes of their lives. In the case of Abigail, who Mrs. Dudley literally hid from the world, her own naivety and curiosity led her into the clutches of the worst the world had to offer and the worst that could happen to her did. I think that is something people tend to overlook in the story.
Yes! Very much the fact that no matter how much you love, your love can turn to poison so easily. Then your children go out into the world with no sense of direction.
This is one of my favorite shows and you did a great job with the analysis! :) I never get sick of listening to other folks' thoughts about this one because although there are similar themes, everyone comes at it from a different angle. Which is what makes the story so great. In Shirley Jackson's novel, a major theme is exploring female suppression - both from outside forces and from inner thoughts. I think Olivia and Poppy both embody that theme. Poppy was a victim of the house in much the same way that Olivia was. Poppy was described as being mentally unstable by Mrs. Dudley, and we witness Olivia's struggles first hand. Poppy's son was ill (or injured? I don't recall), and took up all of her time and attention, leaving no room for her own wants and needs. Olivia has 5 rambunctious children and a busy life. We witness her struggle with the stress of being a wife, mother, and architect and Hugh demonstrating skepticism of her psychic abilities makes her swallow her true self to keep the peace. Both women were suppressing important parts of themselves for the sake of those they loved, and the house latched onto it and used it to take them and their families down.
Thank you for watching and for your comment. I felt that. The struggles of being a woman and sharing so much of yourself. So many roles to play. Especially when children are involved. Did you like the book or show more?
@jennasmovielobby I don't think it is necessarily fair to do a direct comparison of the two. Flanagan used the themes of the book for inspiration but the story itself is not even close to the book. The book centers on one woman, not a family. Although the house "eating" is accurate to the book. But if you forced it outta me, I'd have to say the show. It's way more nuanced and dives deeper than the book did. Although I do recommend that people read the book too. It is worth your time.
This was a great series. You have great videos. I've subbed!
Thank you for the sub and for watching!!!
@@jennasmovielobby Us small channels gotta stick together. You have really good content.
The Neon Demon, The Black Swan and The Substance... get into it!! I love this flavor of female-centric horror cuz women are forced to be perfect and having to be perfect is literally fucking kills us. I've been Sarah. I've been Gigi. I've been Jesse. And now I'm Elisabeth Sparkle. Being beautiful pays the bills. When society and the entertainment industry doesn't view you as beautiful anymore, you starve. You die alone.
Amen! 💕
This was excessively well done thank you.
Thank you very much for saying that 💕
I love the show and I love analysis of this show. I do think most analysis is missing the original source material. The original book has a relationship with the dogs on the property that arent there. The show doesnt require reading the original book but a lot of "hanging lines" are homages or answers to questions that are open in the book.
Ohhh. That makes sense! Maybe things were purposely left up to interpretation, which I like, but I would be interested in hearing about these particular plot points from the books perspective
A lot of people discredit Shirley’s psychic abilities, but she speaks truth in dreams. Her first line as an adult in the entire show is “Nellie’s in the red room.” Also, I don’t think Olivia understood her family legacy. She tells Theo that only the women of their family get the “feelings,” but it’s clear that Luke and even Stephen to a certain degree get them too. I think that’s why Hill House didn’t just give up and try new victims when the Cranes left, but went out of its way to set up a scenario where all the children would come back - because of their sensitivities, the Crane children are especially nourishing to a building that feeds on souls. That’s why it only grudgingly takes Hugh’s offer to give himself to the house instead of his remaining children, because he’s not part of that bloodline, only married into it.
Not discrediting her abilities. I just think she isn’t as in tune with them as her sisters are with theirs. Like her brothers, she’s sort of in denial. Sometimes, it even seems like Hugh has the ability to shine. Maybe Olivia just doesn’t recognize that the boys have something in them? Maybe she was just so used to it being a “girl thing” in her family. Maybe the house gave the kids their abilities and it IS normally a girl thing. I caught it too but I didn’t know what to make of it. Still don’t.
Beautifully done. I love this show deeply and you nailed it.❤
I love it too! Passion project! Thank you for watching ❤️
❤ thanks now I gotta look this up. Hope you have gotten a chance to check out MASH
Yes! Maybe this weekend when the Holidays are more chill! 💕
@jennasmovielobby 😘 Have a great Thanksgiving ❤️‼️
This is a really well done video essay, good job. This show made me fall in love with Mike Flanagan and now I watch everything he makes. Please do a video on Bly Manor
Thank you! I’m doing them all!
Great video. You've got some nice takes i haven't heard before
Thank you for watching!
how have i never seen your videos before i loved this
Awww thank you! 🙏💕
This was such a good analysis of the movie and all the representation that comes with it WOW. 🙌🏽👏🏽
Thank you so much! ❤️
I really like this video. I always saw horror as more than just “scary movies”, and it kind of disappoints me when I see horror movies that just strive to be as horrible as possible like “The Terrifier”. Horror has the capability to really show how horrible a problem can be like how “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” pointed out how inhumane the meat industry was/is. I’m glad someone put my messy thoughts into a cohesive video.
Oh yeah! For sure! It’s sad the genre gets overlooked so much because it really does have something to say. 🥹
Also, I like your username lol! 😝
@jennasmovielobby thank you!
This show was genuinely so good. Love your recap and analysis
