NIL's Impact on the 2025 NBA Draft: Prospects' Decisions and Future Implications
In this episode of the NBA Big Board Podcast, Rafael Barlowe and Leif Thulin dive into the significant impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals on the 2025 NBA Draft class. They discuss how several NBA prospects, such as Wake Forest’s Hunter Sallis and Kansas State’s Coleman Hawkins, opted to return to school, securing NIL deals in the $2 million range-amounts that surpass what many second-round and even some late first-round picks earn. Rafael explores how these lucrative short-term NIL deals have influenced the transfer portal and speculates on the potential long-term negative effects on players' draft statuses. In the final segment, Barlowe puts Thulin in the hot seat with a ser...

    Collin Murray-Boyles returned to improve his stock. Had him as a first rounder right before the tournament. He might get top 20 this year especially if the shooting range improves. All the signs point to that being possible based on his other percentages. He plays similar to Anthony Mason imo. Seems like a lot of them tried to improve their stocks, but the NIL money makes it an easy decision.

    I think a part that is being ignored when it comes to NIL is it gives Front offices data on what a prospect is like when they see big checks. Some guys have already taken their foot off the gas due to being paid well as a 19 year old. Other guys got their college bag and kept their head down and worked harder. Front offices have never been able to know what a dude is like when he has a half mill or a Mill in his account without it being them paying that Mill.

      @@MRBBALLMAN10 That’s the bs narrative that’s always being thrown around, all these kids do is basketball and all they know is basketball. Money is only going to help them take care of their families and keep in mind these are teenagers who will mature over time like everyone else. To insinuate that they have taken their foot off the gas, when they’re in a setting where they’re obligated to practice and workout on a consistent basis is absurd.

Have spent years in the gym with certain players in the NCAA and even NBA. I’m not insinuating anything. I’m speaking on what I know first hand. Just because you’re obligated to doesn’t mean you actually do it to your full potential. You have guys showing up late everywhere once their first few NIL payments hit. You have dudes that become uncoachable overnight. You have dudes flying in IG models to campus now and not just running through the on campus girls. On the flip side you have dudes that when they get their NIL they are thinking “Man I never want this to stop, let me lock in more.” You have 20 year olds who have opened SEP- IRA’s after getting NIL which speaks volumes on where their mind is at and how they have a long term view on life already.

    To participate in that "basketball without borders" camp was pretty dumb idea on Ben Saraf's part... He was rather seriously injured and didn't play in the league for like 3 weeks before this camp. Not only he risked to get his injury worse, he seems to play at like 25% of his ability and only harmed his draft stock...

    Rafael, first I want to really wish your wife to get fully healed. I was so happy to hear things are going better, you look a great person and I'm praying for your family to put it behind and live fully peaceful life. I really enjoyed this episode! Ben Saraf in particular was so impressive in this tournament. Am I crazy to rate him higher than Nolan Traore? I have both at the 5-10th range right now. Saraf hasn't only shown he has an elite shot creating skills for his age, he also surprised me in his passing and steals. The upcoming season in Ulm going to be huge for him. Can't wait to follow how he does there. Noa Essengue impressed me as well. He's so long and a fluid athlete, needs to work on his mechanics and needs to add some on-ball skills to be more than a post up creator in the NBA, but I really love the potential. Traore and Gonzales are great prospects as well. This tournament was so loaded with talent, international prospects become more and more impressive.

    • @arusinov
      @arusinov День назад

      I'm Israeli so biased but I don't really understand why people think it's crazy to rate Saraf over Traore... Traore is obviously very very good distributor but Saraf is not bad passer himself, and quite certainly better scorer. He's also taller and not less athletic.

    • @liambrook7156
      @liambrook7156 День назад

      @@arusinov I think most draft fans didn't really know Ben Saraf prior to the FIBA U-18, so he's quite a new big name that popped out off "nowhere" to them, that's why I asked if I'm crazy to rate him over Traore who, as a French player, was on the draft radar for longer. I think Saraf has a chance to become a complete all around player. I view his ceiling as something between Ginobili and SGA if he developed well.

      @@liambrook7156 yes... but Saraf was the best scorer (2+ ppg more than 2nd best) and all- tournament 5 selection in 2022 Euro U-16. He didn't play in 2023 U18 because of injury but he is the only prospect which really actually played full season (not just 9 games run as Traore, not speaking of others) in very strong professional league as important player in rotation averaging 10.7 ppg, and the team reached Israeli top division semifinals - other teams in semifinals were Euroleague playoff team Maccabi Tel Aviv, EuroCup top-8 team Hapoel Tel Aviv,.and 2022/23 FIBA "Champions league" runner-up Hapoel Jerusalem

Also it seems that his showing in "basketball without borders" camp was not good at all... which reminds that playing injured is typically not great idea (he was injured in league game on 31/1, was expected to miss around month, didn't play in Kiryat-Ata games in February but for some reason participated in the camp on 20/2 -21/2 - just to look his vertical measurement at just 31.5" - he clearly jumped higher on couple of dunks at this tournament)
