I always hate the argument about needing to spend more. Theres always a team in the top 5 in spending that doesn't make the playoffs, and maybe 2 teams. Mets are case #1 for the last few years, and they have the stars. Then theres the Padres: Lots of spending in FA and aggressive trades, but only one decent playoff run and no World Series appearances. They have the stars. Texas wasn't good before last year and this year are pretty bad for their roster. Spending money doesn't equal success. Never has and never will. Cubs need to make some good FA signings but they haven't been as bad at that as people want to believe. This past off-season really didn't have that good of a FA class. Otani and Yamamoto were always going to LAD. Cubs got one of most coveted in Shota. Neris was a consistently good veteran bullpen arm. Hader wanted too much money for too long, and hasn't been good either. Azolay as a closer was extremely good. His numbers overall were good, but as a closer he was great. Almonte was a good bullpen addition. There's also limited room with 40 man roster. Guys to add to team for bullpen that wouldn't go on 40 man aren't good enough to make other team's 40 man so you cant place such high expectations on those signings either. Who were you going to take off that: Azolay, Merriweather, Leiter, Assad, Wesneski, Little...? Everyone wanted Cody back and he's here... The talk about 3B is tiresome and usually very ill-informed. Who could they of gotten? Chapman? He hasn't been good this year offensively and hasn't been for years. His glove is still good but not near what it was, and most people still think it is. There wasn't anyone worth getting for 3B. It is worth giving Morel that shot. Hes not great defensively but definitely better than everyone thought, and his bat has a ton of upside still. He's made incredible adjustments to his game offensively to lower K rate and BB rate, which is what everyone wanted. I'm frustrated with the Cubs performance too but the majority of the reason is simply players not performing to their median expectations, which isn't a lot to ask, and a ton of injuries.

Jed and Rossy will have plenty of time to fish together! Jed will ask Rossy why does he have a concrete block with a thick rope tied around it in his boat!!! Afterall, this is Chicago and that's how business gets done!!

Perspective: For the Brewers to win 90 games, they would need to have a 43-39 record during the second half. Just to TIE them for the division lead, the Cubs would need to go 53-29. Plus, the Cubs would require a better record than the other three teams in the division. Nothing’s impossible, BUT . . .

If they miss the playoffs, he should be fired. The only decision he should have done and did correct was blowing up the core and starting over. They have not gotten high end position players yet though and I don't know if any of their position prospects outside Shaw and maybe Alcantra could be top 5 players in the game at their position in MLB

Ultimately, yes. Jed is a type GM. I think he believes you build with mostly prospects and he overly covets them . I believe the Cubs are a club that needs a GM that believes in signing the no doubters and trading the prospects to fill holes for proven big leaguers.

I was worried about this. This is nearly the same exact team as last year, yet everyone is worse than they were last year. EVERYONE! How's that Hoyer's fault? The fielding was atrocious at the beginning of the year, yet the Cubs were a massive "outs above average" team last season. How's that Hoyer's fault? Swanson was struggling defensively, Nico, Busch, Happ. Not only that, but the Cubs are the MOST injured team in baseball. I know that you guys need narratives, but Hoyer added Busch, Almonte, Neris, Bellinger and SHOTA IMANAGA last season; yet the Cubs are worse. Also, the Brewers are better this year with yet another roster that is very similar to what it was last year. If anything, they lost huge pieces. My issue is with Hoyer firing Ross and replacing him with an overrated manager. I knew once Ross was gone, if the Cubs struggled, you'd all blame Hoyer. IT'S COUNSELL! Bullpen mismanagement. No fire. No pissed-offness. Overconfident. Underinformed. He didn't even start using Leiter Jr. against lefties until about a week ago! After Ben Brown got called up the last time, they stuck him right back in the starting-rotation!!! MORONIC! Who knows how long he's going to need to recover. He hasn't maximized the roster at all. And yes, the writing was on the wall from the beginning of the season. We need a closer. But who the f' is going to give up on their season in May? Or June? Dumb. No. Hoyer is not your scapegoat. Jed Hoyer should never have been hired in the first place . He's been totally incompetent since he got here . Bad signings and bad extensions have destroyed any chance the Cubs may have had to be playoff Contenders . Swanson and Counsell were the two most unnecessary signings he has made . Neither of them were needed . And don't say they needed a shortstop because Nico played gold glove quality short the previous year . They could have signed a good 2nd baseman and a quality reliever for the money they gave a no hit low clutch Swanson , and the money they gave Counsell is a joke . They made the deal for Counsell while Ross was still employed as the manager and word has it that Counsell approached the Cubs first . Either way he's a snipe .

It's amplified because every other Chicago team is brutal and there was some hope for the Cubs. They are now proven a lifeless, heartless team. They simply lay down and don't compete with teams at half their payroll. Hard to recall a team worse in key situations.
