    Can someone explain me why we don't use this kind of mechanism instead of the one normally present in cars? The force here is applied in line with the cilinder so should be more efficient than a common engine with cranckshaft right?

      The piston is moving in line but the torque is still the greatest at 90 degrees from the crank shaft and 0 toque inline with the crank shaft. So the torque output is the same, plus extra complexity and friction losses. So not really that efficient. This kind of design made more sense on old steam engines that needed the crank shaft to stay in line due to design limitations of the time.

      It seems like having a solid piston and con rod with no pivot joint would reduce the friction between the piston and cylinder similar to the pendular motor, but without having to make toroidal pistons and cylinders.

    Well spotted Noah - camera was mounted on a Yaskawa industrial robot - you can hear the servos in places.

    I like the valve linkage you used, I try to get my engines to run as slow as possible but the smaller the model the faster it needs to go. geoff
