Major Winters was one of the greatest military leaders of all time. Just the simple way he stopped writing and stood up looked a great soldier in the eyes and told him what a fine soldier he was. Then gave a perfect salute and shook his hand. What a great leader of men

Imagine being in a combat zone, knowing you're already susceptible to fear-induced hysterical blindness, you're alone creeping through the woods at night, the sounds of a wounded man echoing from a distance, absolutely scared out of your mind... And the most terrifying man in the regiment walks out of the darkness.

Such a memorable scene..you can see how the young solder struggles to makes sense of it all...the war is over for him...the end of a long, exciting but terrifying experience...that the people back home will never understand...it's very powerful..

This wont be popular but bear with me... Stephen Ambrose wrote in one of his earlier editions that Shifty refused an order to go on a routine patrol .... in Bastogne during the battler of the bulge. He did break. After the publishing of the book, the real Shifty Powers took exception to that part and Ambrose erased that part in all following editions. However I wouldnt fault Shifty for breaking, to be under sporadic shelling at all hours while surrounded by the enemy. Of course it takes a toll on the soldiers on the siege. Having that said, Ambrose also did kill Blithe in his book, while the real Albert Blithe lived to be 70.

It was a shame what happened as Shifty tried to make his way home. He got into a vehicle wreck, severely injured himself, all his money and loot were stolen (probably by other GIs). Still, an incredible man.

I have a particular interest in how memories affect us as people. Though war ptsd is nothing compared to say, breakups. Its interesting how similarly our memories can weigh on us. Simple everyday things that objectively mean nothing can remind us of very specific painful times. Memories can replay in our heads endlessly, changing something that happened in seconds into an over-analysis that feels like hours in the head. Both radically changing our perspectives and personality.

This scene moved me more than any other scene in the entire series. I can't imagine the immense guilt and regret some soldiers felt at having to end the lives of young men who weren't even old enough to buy beer or gamble in the USA. Winters knows he was just doing his duty and that if he hadn't ended that young German soldier's life it could have potentially caused the dearh of a lot of US soldiers but that doesn't mean those terrible feelings that come with ending a life won't haunt him the rest of his life. Such an incredible scene.

I’m an Iraq war vet, and i know exactly how his character felt in that moment. I was home for about 6 months and while driving one day I had a flashback to a roadside bomb just looking at the curb out my window. Next thing I knew I heard hoking and yelling and realized I drove straight through a red light intersection, barely missing crossing traffic. Totally zonked out, lights on but nobody home. Flashbacks can be so real it’s like you entered a worm hole straight to the past.

Easy were all fine men, and as a family member I'm admittedly biased, but having known Shifty I have no doubt they picked the most deserving. He was as fine and humble a man as you could ever dream of meeting, and for all his accomplishments had a demeanor that would leave anyone he talked to forgetting they're talking to a literal hero and simultaneously like they're the most important person in the universe. You could both be in a room of 50 movie stars but if he was talking to you it was 1-to-1, no distraction, and they didn't matter. I'm proud to share blood with him, no doubt, but not half as proud as I am to have been able to spend time and get to know him. I wish everyone had gotten the chance to realize that, for all the good he did in a soldier's uniform, he was just as fine if not better even without it. Godspeed, Cousin.

Whats amazing is that these men are talking about things that happend 50 years ago and what Winters did as a man in his 20's. To hear an 80 year old man talk about the actions of a 20 something LT is powerful.

I’ll never forget watching this series for the first time. I won’t spoil anything just in case, but at the end of the show it was so emotional and I just had to know more about Dick Winters. I googled him and he had passed away that day. I don’t know why, but that felt weird, like I just learned his story the day he was gone. Amazing man.
