Thank you! there were some more scenes that I wanted to fit in but the 3 main scenes (haha a 3 course meal?) were shot so beautifully I didn't want to cut them up; I hope it's a case of less is more with my spin on things. I've been wanting to make an edit to Sonnet since season 2 so I'm glad it's finally off my chest 😭

Yes the editing and cinematography was stellar, as always, but they amped it up a notch - some episodes were mesmerizing like the best moments in Honeydew and Sundae last season, but up to eleven. Joanna Naugle and co. did what they had to do 🥰

thank you I I didn't set about to make it so unsettling tbh, I wanted it to be funny ... but then I was creeped out making it because the material is there! the lighting/blocking of the shot of Carmy smiling at the table on a date with Claire, and she's happily talking about something, but the audio is muted in the episode and a soundtrack plays instead / Carmy trying and failing to pacify his mother and assure her he's happy to spend time with her, yikes! Carmy needs therapy yesterday - she's so great it scares the shit out of him ... I don't think that's why you're scared dude 😢

I've still only watched it once, but the more that I think about it, and the more that I talk to my Sydcarmy shipping mutuals on Tumblr, the more that I respect/ appreciate it - I think the genre shift feel of season 3 is deliberate/ hope my renewed faith in the show's writing / creative direction is rewarded. There have been elements of magical realism / fairy tale / fable inspiration in the show since Season one e.g. Carmy's disturbing dreams, Fak speaking with the video game BallBreaker 'man in the machine character, Sydney and Marcus' speedy return after quitting, and the Deus Ex Machina of the reveal of Mikey stashing money in the tomato cans in Braciole to help Carmy open his dream restaurant. I think they're leaning into these fantastical elements with each passing season, hence the jarring shift / lack of resolution of many a problem in season 3; and the prominence of the concept of "film and movie magic" (the video Marcus watches) and legerdemain/ slight of hand in the episode Apologies. Personally I now think that (in addition to being semi-autobiographical for Chris Storer and his family) I think that the creators are synthesizing many different films, stories and religious and mythological tales for darkly comedic inspiration. e.g. Claire x Carmy x Syd is greatly improved for me as a storyline if my growing suspicions that they are a Lilith × Adam x Eve allegory (for one thing) are correct, and that they and the rest of the cast represent deconstructed religious, mythic, and fantasy concepts and characters and tales that are all brought together in the guise of an 'ordinary' workplace dramedy in a fictional Chicago restaurant. I appreciate the season more if I think of Claire as Lilith (Adam's first wife apocryphally, that left him and eventually became a she-demon according to Jewish mysticism, or who was just a misunderstood woman that was punished for standing in her own power according to a feminist lens), and if my suspicions that Carmy's story is meant to be a parallel to Biblical Adam, as Sydney's is to Biblical Eve. If my suspicions are correct, Review in Season one was the start of a deconstructed depiction of the biblical "Fall" of man in Genesis 3 - as the high pedestal/regard that Sydney and Marcus hold Carmy is shattered, even once even tempered and by the book Sydney loses her cool and accidentally stabs Richie, Marcus wastes precious time and adds to the already high tensions and fastidious Sydney makes two serious mistakes, serving the plate that Carmy didn't clear to be added to the menu yet and not taking the pre-order option off on their to-go system (a la Eve giving Adam to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil)! Carmy rages at Sydney and takes no ownership of the disaster, "I told you that dish/we weren't ready for the system!" despite him being Sydney's boss and ultimately responsible for signing off on the system and to double check her work after he delegates her a ton of responsibilities that are way above her pay grade. This reminds me of Adam taking no ownership of his own actions in the fall and blaming God and his wife for the debacle that he ultimately landed himself, his wife and all of humanity in. The entire restaurant crew ultimately reunites, but the ending is bittersweet and things are never quite the same, which is reminiscent of God covering Adam and Eve's nakedness, but expelling them from the simple innocent days of the Garden of Eden; a place where they didn't have to work so hard, or even at all to live. Instead of remaining in the humble greasy spoon that was The Beef, Syd and Carmy attempt to open a high end restaurant in the 'desolate wasteland' that is the restaurant industry in Chicago post-CoVID; where even acclaimed restaurants are dying all around them, and a restaurant where Syd and Carmy (and especially Carmy) are yet to learn to work in a transparent, just and equal fashion with their partner. I also think that the discord and disconnect that came into Syd and Carmy's lives/dynamic (after they reconciled in the wake of their Season 1 "domestic power struggle and estrangement") when Claire was introduced makes a lot of sense (to me), or would be more satisfying if Claire isn't meant to be, or is someday revealed to have been not just another bland run of the mill Manic Pixie Dream Girl disposable love interest or a character written as just another white woman that: violates boundaries; weaponizes her tears (crying in front of Richie and not explaining why exactly, leading him to assume the worst about Carmy; and also misrepresenting what Carmy said in his breakdown in the fridge to Tiffany and making herself out to be a victim); threatens people ('joking' that she'd get the Faks to beat Carmy up for not giving his number to her etc.), but never gets called out on it. 😅 Somehow against all odds I have my hopes up again for this show if even a fraction of what I'm suspecting is right and is explicitly demystified. P.S. I also think that this show and this season specifically was influenced by The Mirror (1975) and Strange Days (1995) very heavily, both thematically and cinematography wise - upon both of these films initial release, they were very divisive, but they have both been re-evaluated as masterpieces of their respective genres, cyberpunk sci-fi thriller, and semi autobiographical experimental psychological drama. It is my sincere hope that this is the case because these two films are some of the best movies I've seen, and I hope that as risky a move as pulling so many influences from preexisting works is, I hope that The Bear Season 3 and the series as a whole receives a similarly positive re-evaluation as a masterpiece of the dramedy genre, of film and television story telling in general once the conflicts and emotional pay offs that the show's creators are building up are eventually exposed and resolved. I really wanted to like Claire, but I'm more and more convinced that the creators never actually intended for us to like her...I agree with you, she is annoying - and I resigned myself to finding her irksome especially when she left Kelly drunk and alone with a strange man at the house party in Pop. I hope that if she makes an appearance in S3 that it'd be brief and to the point, because she feels straight out of a different genre from the rest of the cast entirely.

Yes, the music is almost as much of a player in this show as the actors themselves. Christopher Storer and Josh Senior have done an excellent job with the soundtrack selection and the editors make such careful use of these tracks; it's always a pleasure to watch a series where songs' lyrics and mood are so thematically important for the scenes. I can't wait to hear what songs they use for Season 3.
