"The first part of this song that came to me was the opening riff. I kept playing it on loop - something about it felt so soothing, peaceful and grounded. I’m sending this song out to anyone who's been going through tough times lately. Think of it as a reminder to love and take care of yourself, and as a space to reflect on a time in your life when you were truly carefree." This song is the sec...

“Until September 2023, I was playing a completely different version of this song. Written by the great Abigail Washburn, my initial version was essentially a bass-and-voice rendition of the original. In a prep session with my producer Bruce Molsky, we both agreed that it just wasn’t landing. He pulled out a fretless banjo, and suggested I try leaning into a bluesy, modal sound instead. That ide...

Bass Lessons: Round Two /// “How to Play Fast!”
Thanks for the video Nate! They are very helpful! I have small hands, and it is a little bit more confortable to use the 3rd instead of 2nd finger for Ne-Ner-Ne. There is any reason to use the 2nd or it will be the same?
Hey Marcel! When playing in the lower registers of the bass, I advise students to only use their 1st, 2nd and 4th fingers. The 3rd finger is weak on its own, and simply functions as a support system for the 4th finger. If you're having trouble positioning your hand for ne-ner-ne-ner, you can shift slightly from finger to finger, but I'd advise against using your 3rd finger.
@@NateSabatBass Good to know! Thank you very much for the answer!
This sounds so good! I'm a cello student and I want to switch to the bass next year.
Swing it! 👯💃
Thank you
Happy holidays!
@@NateSabatBass Happy Holidays to you to
Thank you! Really great x
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you xx
Amazing saludos desde Costa Rica 🇨🇷🤟
Thanks!
Nate, I've been playing bluegrass bass for about 2 years. I'm a former brass player/music education major. I've gotten good enough to handle some good bluegrass jam sessions. But I always have to resort back to the single note grip (the claw as you call it) due to left hand fatigue. So hard to press down the strings enough for clean sounds, especially with fast tempos. Do you have any advice? Would you be willing to do a private lesson/zoom with me to discuss this? I'll pay for your time.
Hi Dustin, yes a private lesson would probably be the most helpful way to talk through this! Shoot me a message via the connect page on my website (natesabat.com) and I’ll get back to you on Monday.
Too busy in my opinion.
I have noticed that most upright bass players stand to the side as in this instruction. I prefer to stand more behind the instrument. I do not need to see the finger board when I play and it just feels more comfortable in my experience.
That’s totally cool in my book, Tim! It’s certainly common when playing with the bow, since you’re going for downward pressure, and works well for pizz too.
have you ever considered playing with a backing track?
Yes, it's crossed my mind! Next year I'll be rolling out a bunch of bassline videos with backing tracks, so stay tuned for that!
That is amazing.
Can you shuffle bow with the German hold?
Most certainly! While it'll be a slightly different mechanism, it can be done. Just apply the same technique you would use while playing a passage of fast 8th notes, it should do the trick!
That's flat-out kool Nate
Hey thanks!
Wow, what a lesson with instructions, and additionally a vocal to see a real application of the theory. Congrats!
Thanks Gerald!
Thank you, Mr. Sabat. Wonderfully done.
@@terrymahoney3709 thanks Terry!
that's outstanding-makes me want to play a bass
Thanks so much! And hey, never too late to start
I can learn how to play better by playing song and I am sure I not the only one so just putting it out there
Why isn't anyone teaching bluegrass songs on the bass ,I just looked for fox on the fun bluegrass song in bass lessons and other bluegrass songs and there are none on RUclips WHY
Hi Joseph! I totally get that -- while I don't have Fox on the Run out there yet, I do have this recent video on five approaches to On My Way Back to the Old Home, which you can find here: ruclips.net/video/uLfRxieU7fA/видео.html
Pretty cool! A little bit of scat, too!
Thanks terry!
Get it NATE!!
Amazing playing, amazing sound
Pretty cool song! Haunting bass, too!
Thanks Terry!
Sounds F'n great dude!!! Also Good voice man!!! 🤘
Hey thanks!
Amazing!! Love hearing the bass as a solo instrument, you make it shine so bright! :)
Thanks so much!
I love this, if only I could play it by myself
I'm not a bass player can I still watch
No. Leave immediately. /s
This should be viral this is simply amazing!
Love this tune. Nicely done!
Thanks! I love it too!
That is excellent, Nate! thanks so much
Glad it was helpful Jeff!
Great instruction I learned so much. Thank you!
I’m glad it was helpful!
You continue to amaze & inspire!
At 1:54 you’re going “up to that top C”. Looking at your finger position I cannot find a C there. What am I missing?
Hi Bernard! To reach that C with your left hand, you'll need to move the entire hand up the fingerboard (towards the floor) one half step. Otherwise, you'll be playing the B just below the correct note.
Very tasty playing. I like the simplicity and the subtle ghost notes and fills here and there. I didn't realize you were the "Dirt Simple" book guy. I bought that last year and have worked with it a bit. Great book and great videos here, thank you.
Hey thanks! You're welcome, and glad to hear you're digging the book as well.
Hi! I really like your videos. There are so few good bass videos on bluegrass bass on RUclips. Keep up the good work! I would love to see more stuff! /Cheers from Sweden, Mattias
Thanks Mattias, and glad you're finding them useful!
Awesome Nate. Sounding amazing!
Thanks!
This was so helpful, deserves so many more views
Hey thanks!
Beautiful, steady tone, dude. Great stuff.
Thanks!
Great lesson! Gonna watch some more of your video's, thanks for posting them.
Glad to hear it, and you're very welcome!
That's great, Nate! A great way to learn the melody, work on your arco, and baseline feel & sound ALL AT ONCE! 💛💛💛
thanks doug!
Your videos are so cool thank you!
Thanks!!
Could you say where you are setting when you say minus or pull out or centered. Is far left minus and pulling out? Is top centered and balanced? Far right has the most whatever? Thanks, but this has been hard for me to find out.
Hi Paula! Yes -- turning the knob all the way to the left pulls out that specific frequency range/effect, while turning the knob all the way to the right adds all of it in. Dead center is at zero.
Nate these shuffle bowing videos are fantastic! I’m a folky bluegrasser who has messed around with the bow off & on for a few years and this video was a breakthrough for me!
So great to hear this!! Glad I could be of assistance.
Thanks for the PDF for this lesson on your Patreon page. You're an outstanding teacher. Online lessons are challenging and you are providing all the tools to make is successful.
Thanks for saying so Jacy, and happy to be of assistance!
At about 3:05, you go from the C arpeggio to what I think is the F note, which my ear likes. But then you stop & never play that I to IV progression again. Why do you go from the I to the IV there? As I’m practicing, I am following exactly what you are doing the rest of the lesson from C to Dm to E, etc. But my ear wants to go from the I to the IV, like you did briefly. Why is that? I feel like that’s what we would do with vocal warm ups? I hope my question makes sense!
Hi Jacy! So I just go from the I to the IV there as an example of how the walking arpeggios might be used in a country song. The exercise itself is designed for you to become comfortable with every option in C major, so you then know what to do when playing a song with any given chord progression.
Excellent. Thanks!
I joined your Patreon. Thanks for the excellent digestible approach.
You bet Jacy! Thanks for joining!
Great lesson! I use scales for warm ups. Sometimes I get so into them time passes and its not a warm up anymore. Call me weird I could play scales all day.
Thanks Dave! And I feel ya, scales are the bomb.
Yahoo. buddy~super~ amazing ~:))
Thanks!
You bet! Thanks for watching!
