Why Your Water Bill Doesn't Pay for Any Water At All.
Просмотров 1605 месяцев назад
This was a quick project I made because I hear a common refrain when discussing water leaks: the city, or the people, or SOMEONE is somehow losing money when water leaks go unrepaired. When you shake out the math, though, the cost of lost water is actually so tiny that's it's practically zero. It's a small section of a pie chart, which itself is part of a small section of another pie chart, whi...

One thing I do a poor job of explaining is what I mean by the "Priorities" and how they are associated with money. What I mean is, the highway standards, if we are to follow them, seem to involve spending a lot of extra money to ensure that cars are able to go over the speed limit. How about we use some of that extra money to, instead, match the "natural speed" of the road to match the speed li...

    This is the DUMBEST idea I have ever heard!!! So, you're telling me, that my 54 year old body is supposed to bike all the way to the nearest Walmart and carry home $600.00 worth of groceries for my family of 7 on a BIKE! Or on PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!! Or HOW am I supposed to get my kids to a dr appt in another city when I can't have a car here? The infrastructure ALONE for electric vehicles is more than astronomical. And the idea that you are trying to avoid being like California? This takes us straight into the fires! STOP making decisions for ME! I, for ONE, will NOT be participating in this stupid nonsense!

      I encourage you to consider that over half of all tax dollars in Fort Smith are going to subsidize your trip to Wal-Mart. There is a 2% sales tax in Fort Smith and half of that goes towards roadways. You are subsidized.

    100% agree with your conclusion. Fort Smith has some of the worst pedestrian friendly design I've ever seen. You're right that it's not the police' issue to solve. Maybe the City Council along with the Mayor should get out and try walking in some of these places. Even in town I can think of plenty of places where you are forced to walk/ride in the street. Free Ferry is one that stands out as it's one of the few that cross i540.

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort Месяц назад

      Thank you for that phrasing: "it's not the police' issue to solve." I struggled hard to come up with a positive way to say something like that. Agreed that Free Ferry is another great example, and that intersection on it right by i540 is incredibly dangerous for walkers and cyclists as well. In general, it is incredibly difficult to cross i-540 at all, the best place I have found to do it is Old Greenwood Rd.

    The "Great Wall of Fort Smith" Phoenix power center has always had too much parking... even when it was built new and all the buildings were full there's always extra parking. The anchor stores (Target, Dick's, and Best Buy) use the most parking but the smaller spots just don't. Ulta would be the exception but let's be honest most shop at Target too! Rogers mall would be another one to look at, same as the NWA mall up in Fayetteville it's a small core of faux urban walkability then a huge empty lot of concrete. I wouldn't mind it so much if there were at least some trees. If you really want to see a place that uses all the parking go look at the state line Choctaw casino near Pocola. I drove by on Black Friday and they had almost the entire lot full.

  • @Itsme-ox5sm
    @Itsme-ox5sm Месяц назад

    Wait. The small stores may not be used for a business any longer because it's in a residential area? Isn't the building grandfathered in? Doesn't the person who owns the building have protection because of the grandfathered laws? Or is the land just left to being not only worthless but a liability?

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort Месяц назад

      Not sure what small stores in particular, but yes, there are so-called "grandfather" laws in Fort Smith. We would call them "legal, non-conforming." It depends what district you are in though. In this video I rode through the downtown where it would be very easy to open a business in an existing building, and then the historic Belle Grove neighborhood where it would probably be very hard. These two neighborhoods have entirely different rules you have to follow. I haven't actually gone through the process myself but I assume you would need to get a new certificate of occupancy upon any change to occupancy classification, which would entail going through a variance request.

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort 3 месяца назад

      What do you mean? Our hospitals are on Towson Avenue and Rogers Avenue which are not affected by this plan. In fact, both roadways are scheduled to be expanded through massive state and Federal infrastructure subsidies. The mobility plan maintains existing cycling/walking infrastructure and also adds it to existing empty spaces in the middle of nowhere (I doubt that will actually happen, but that's the map they drew). It doesn't remove any existing infrastructure except for 1 lane of parking along B-Street, which, lets face it, nobody uses despite costing millions of dollars in maintenance.

    Sorry, Nara Chicken is awful. Also, while I recognize that three girls has a good reputation and deservedly so, if you're going to put that type of food on your list, the obvious candidate would be Pho Vietnam, which not only has a larger menu, but the chef is top-notch and her presentation is off the charts good. The food is the best in town in this category, and includes French influences, because, duh! Vietnam, which was once a French protectorate.

    Though I appreciate the knowledge share, I do have a couple of issues to call out. See below: 1. You have 0 Vietnamese restaurants - Pho Vietnam is a gem, and there are various other great Vietnamese spots that you missed in a city that is largely highlighted by its Vietnamese offerings 2. Patrick's is a local chain that spawned out of a spot in Russellville

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort 4 месяца назад

      #9 on the list, Three Girls Pho, is Vietnamese. Agreed that there are a plethora of amazing Vietnamese options. I unfortunately could not include every restaurant. Russellville is from Arkansas, so it counts. Other local chains such as Razorback Pizza, Slim Chickens, Gusano's, etc. would also count.

Finally, I want to say that I was incorrect on Patrick's - I had mixed it up with CJ's Butcher Boy Burgers in Russ Vegas. I will now tuck my tail and find a rock to crawl under for a few days. *EDIT* Three Girls Pho looks great! Don't think it was around when I lived in the area. My go-to was always Pho Vietnam 🤤

    Hah, we don't even have a bike rack at Bike Rack Brewing Company on B street. How do we expect to turn b street into this cycling utopia? This plan is delusional.

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort 4 месяца назад

      B Street needs to be repaved. Would you rather the city spend $5m to repave both lanes, then another $5m in 20 years when its time to repave again? Or would you rather spend $1.5m to build a bike lane and $2.5 to repave only one lane, then $2.5m to repave the same every 20 years after. In 40 years, the city saves $3.75m. All I hear from opponents is that they love HUGE tax & spend policies to subsidize their private property.

    • @theantichrome9842
      @theantichrome9842 4 месяца назад

      @@AndyInTheFort Less than 2 miles of repaving at $5 million... thats over $474 per foot. Subsidies indeed. They should have left the old brick streets alone.

    • @AndyInTheFort
      @AndyInTheFort 4 месяца назад

      @@theantichrome9842 If you really believe that, you will join me in advocating for more brick streets then. They are extremely unpopular because they are "bumpy," but cheaper than concrete to maintain and their lifetime maintenance cost is lower than asphalt for the first 60 years of service. Where they get expensive is when they have to be replaced, but there is also new technology to make that cheaper if a city is willing to invest in it. And yes, paving streets is expensive and $474/ft is not unrealistic. Widening Massard was exactly $1000/foot. If you oppose this type of overspending, I really suggest you check out the other videos on this channel because a central tenet is that (1) roadways and the space they take up is way more expensive than anyone realizes, and (2) everyone is just okay with that for some reason. A potential $2.1 million spent on waterslides caused outrage to everyone, but $5.6m to repave a small stretch of Phoenix, approved at the same meeting on 7/9/24, wasn't even a blip on the radar. We would all have personal butlers if it weren't for the taxes we pay on roads (HALF of the city's total sales tax goes towards roads).

That's why people are angry.
