I disagree that NbyNW isn't that highly rated among Hitchcock fans. I know of many who rate it very highly. It is easily in my top 3 of his movies and is also easily a top 50 of all time.

I'd add the scene where the Japanese villain (played by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also won an Oscar for the music) directs a film crew to focus on the empress while the "Emperor Walz" plays in the background. Regarding the actors speaking English: most of the primary Chinese actors were from Hong Kong (at that time a British colony) and did speak English. Moreover, the Chinese dialect spoken in Hong Kong is not the same as would have been spoken in Northern China (Mandarin and Manchu) during the period covered in most of the film. Great film and interesting to hear your thoughts.

I think this film is so good. Its about the alienated people in society. I feel its more honest than current movies. The homophobia reflects the times, but also fits with the themes of fragile masculinity etc. As a gay guy it doesn't bither me, i think its meant to be provocative. This film is all about Joe Bucks search for his own identity. Hes been sexuzlised by his grandma from his childhood, and its only through his friendship with ratso that he can become his own person and shed the past traumas

I can relate to people who walked out of the theater. I first watched Everything Everywhere on Blu ray at home and could only watch 15 minutes at a time cause it was just too much. By the end of the movie, I was like "Meh....pretty good. 7 out of 10". But I LOVED the film score/soundtrack so I went to see it a second time in a big movie theater.....where the whole movie clicked and I was blown out of my seat.

Don't know what "hilarious" D&D campaigns or games people are playing that involve fat dragons, guys who walk in straight lines, along with constant Marvel-like one-liners, humor and big fight action where barely anything is taken seriously as seen in this movie. Yeah, apparently they got all the monsters, references and locations right but that's about it as far as any D&D feel goes.

Good review as always, gents. Would never have guessed Dave would be keener on Shazam 2 than JW4, but i do think his crappy screening experience definitely colored his viewing of the movie. Glad that Strangelove was made before the kind of over the top idiocy of Don't Look Up became common place or it'd be full of morons running around screaming about nuclear armageddon while CG graphics super imposed over nuclear explosions rack up a kill count of each mushroom cloud because it'd presume that audiences can't figure out that nukes are bad and would fall asleep otherwise. Would totally suck right? Oh wait, you guys loved that dumb blatant, on-the-nose "hilarious" piece of trash too.

Gotta give you guys props for tackling this movie 👍 Not an easy thing for three dudes to navigate haha. I think it’s unfortunate that you seemed to see it mostly as a women’s issues movie and the purely human element was lost. It’s funny how films about men tend to be universal but movies about women are just for women or there to speak about some specific women’s issue. I realize the context is pretty difficult to ignore. I suppose many men would feel vilified or attacked (none of you said that, just generalizing if you will permit me). All I thought about was not whether this kind of conversation has been happening before or if it should be happening, but how many times I’ve had this conversation with myself in my mind, arguing all of those points. So I kept going back forth trying to decide which one was valid, and coming to realize they all were and that I’ve chosen different paths in different situations. Everyone processes trauma differently. And I don’t mean for issues concerning men vs women exclusively or even predominantly. Anyone who has ever experienced an abusive situation (at whoever’s hands) or has felt powerless or voiceless should be able to relate to the dilemma they’re tackling. But we haven’t reached a point in our society where men can identify with what women are saying, allow themselves to learn not about women, but about themselves as humans too and see themselves in their place, actually empathize. But I can see how the specifics of the story can make that difficult. I do wish we can get to a point where men won’t feel excluded from having a personal experience when listening to women and won’t just be, at best, supporters of women’s rights, but will feel truly connected as people. Yes, I’ll drink now 😂

First of all, it would have been great if there was a woman also in this conversation. Second, Domink basically not only used a real person who is dead and can't defend for herself, and showed her being exploited over and over but he also made a choice in ignoring all her achievements as an actress, business woman and person in her lifetime. He just abused her again and again for "art".

As long as you gentleman interact a bit more with your subscribers, I believe you will genuinely do quite well on here. While the argument that Elvis stole anything really is way off, especially as the main citation given for this is his rendering of 'Hound Dog' originally done by Big Mama Thornton. However, Hound Dog was written by two white Jewish gentleman in Lieber & Stoller, and they were among Elvis' most prolific songwriters. Elvis' version of Hound Dog was also in no way like Thornton's (who's version I prefer) & the song was not only written by Lieber & Stoller, but Elvis' version was given to him by the white group Freddie Bell and the Bellboys. Factually, Elvis was also quite loved by the black community when he started as he was also fighting the white establishment who was trying to ban him and Rock N Roll. So, consciously or not, he actually broke down the barrier for black artists to let their music through. This is acknowledged by everyone from BB King to Little Richard to Jackie Wilson, who also said - in his view - every other black artist he saw copied Elvis. Elvis was also very supportive of black artists and even helped Johnny Bragg, the lead singer of the Prisonaires, record their hit 'Walking in the Rain' at Sun Records in 1953, the year before Elvis hit big in the South with 'That's Alright Mama.' As many don't realize this, but Elvis had a bit of a stutter and so did Bragg. While it was Elvis helping Bragg with his enunciation to get through 'Walkin' in the Rain' that cemented their friendship. With Elvis, too, also going to the prison where Bragg was held to meet and offer money for lawyers and more, etc. Elvis' best friend as a boy growing up in Tupelo was also a black gentleman by the name of Sam Bell (now sadly deceased;-( , who was one of Luhrmann's key sources about Elvis for the movie. Bell grew up with his grandparents and Elvis' backyard buttressed up to Bell's grandparent's yard which was directly behind Elvis' home to the south. The scenes of Elvis looking in at the brothel, etc., being a recreation of the times he would visit Shakerag, a thriving little black community about a mile south of Bell's home. It was there that Elvis met Muddy Waters as a child and other blacks in the community took an interest in him b/c he was so polite and also had a fascination w/music.

So raised by wolves is pretty much the sequel to prometheus that we wanted to see the androids are way better than David.

I liked Tom in the roll. He had the drawing power to get peoples attention that this wasn’t going to be same old thing about Elvis. To me it was brilliant
