The 61-mini-key, Yamaha PSS-680 was a birthday present and my second keyboard ever (I still have one). The first keyboard I had was the 49-mini-key, CASIO MT-100, which I received as a Christmas present in 1985. The Casio did not have any recording function, but the Yamaha had a 5-track 'sequencer' and a basic synthesizer. Whilst I did not understand how synthesis worked back then, I was curiou...

My fifth sequencing attempt. Playing mostly by ear, and therefore incapable of reading the full piano version of this piece at the time, it marks the point in my life when I worked out that I could improvise a left-hand bass from a chord sequence. The simplified chord sequence and melody were taken from the original series of The Complete Keyboard Player, by Kenneth Baker. The 61-mini-key, Yama...

My fourth attempt at sequencing. All 5 tracks played live into the sequencer with no quantise or post-editing. This was the first time I realised the power of layering sounds over the top of each other. I was very proud of working out how I could play record the arpeggiated descending runs which I recorded at a quarter of the main tempo and then when the track was played back at the original sp...
YAMAHA PSS-680 - AGED 14 - "DILL" - Original Composition

My first ever composition ever. I have no idea why it's called "Dill". Everything was recorded live into the 5 sequencer tracks with no quantise or post-editing. I was (and still am) very proud of my creativity here. This is the result of hours and hours of trying to manipulate the synthesizer and practice triggering the functions of the keyboard whilst playing. The 61-mini-key, Yamaha PSS-680 ...

My first attempt at sequencing using one of the most iconic sythesizer tracks of all time, "Popcorn", written by musical legend Gershon Kingsley in 1969. The original by Fiddlers Dram was high in the charts during October 1979 and at that time, I was only 11 1/2 and about to begin boarding school based in the beautiful South Lake District England and yes, I attended that school for at least three years and I liked it and I wish that school had become a college. So yes, this song also reminds me of when I was about to start at boarding school again, age 11 years old plus. As soon as I saw that school and I was accepted, I just could not wait to begin. Though I liked the day primary that were okay in it’s own way, certainly, this school I attended from the age of 11+, were fantastic as it was a huge novelty. So yes, again, many songs remind me of when I was about to begin, and when I finally began at that school.

@@mrbeezkeez1599 i’m assuming you were 14 years of age when this instrument was released and I’m assuming you may have received it as a birthday or Christmas present. Yes, it is a good old vintage keyboard. I would sound fantastic through and effects processor including reverbs et cetera added the midi is very good on it. Of course if you’re good with media skills. Back in 1988, I turned 20, and at that time, I had a Casio, MT, NT 55 if I remember rightly I bought when I was 19 years of age. During August 1988, I bought a PSS 270 sound Bank, portable keyboard and later in the year, I borrowed a PSS 470 Yamaha, which has the sliders digital synthesiser facility. I’ve had loads of music keyboard since Including my recent purchase of a PSRSX 900 Yamaha and I’ve got a couple of other keyboards, I’m only a hobbyist.

@@mrbeezkeez1599 I also owned a PS5 70 and again, very good for its time and exceptionally good when you put it through and effects processor it can sure enhance the sounds including drums et cetera. So yeah, they’re not bad machines at all pretty nifty, especially when you multi track record them putting them through an affect processor. I’m assuming, you put your PSS 680 through some kind of sequencer when you recorded these demos, including this one. Excellent work. Well done.

@@mrbeezkeez1599 The piano sounds more like an AWM sound, are you sure you didn't midi your PSS-680 to a Yamaha EMT-10 external sound module?

The Yamaha PSS-680 is still a great keyboard and there is still magic in doing music production with these older lofi keyboards. Growing up I had a Yamaha PSS-790 which was my first serious keyboard, the PSS-790 was very cutting edge for it's time as it uses AWM sounds which were very realistic sounding especially for a home keyboard. I started getting back into collecting retro home keyboards in 2018 with the Yamaha PSS-470 in 2018 for my 30th birthday and I also bought a Yamaha PSS-680 in April 2021 when I was on sabbatical plus recently I bought a Casiotone MT-500 for my 35 birthday which will be tomorrow. In my experience it was mainly from 2003-2010 that people were going on about how these 80s and early 90s Yamaha and Casio keyboards sound "outdated" or sound like "🧀" or a time when nobody really seemed bothered about them.
