What grit sandpaper is good for sanding some layers of multimedia on canvas with orbital sander? I’m thinking 120-300 grit? Thanks so much for your video.
@@catemarkey I think 120-220 would be fine

@@CatandBodhi-ArtSpiritAdventure you're welcome. A new video is overdue. I'll send one out soon.
Hi Diane. Just want to say I really enjoy your videos and appreciate your clear explanations of things. I also love your paintings. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
@@shelleysechrist508 you're welcome. Thanks for reaching out
Thank you again. You are just the one I needed at this point in my art. Thank you for demonstrating and explaining.
@@dianecharest8365 you're welcome
Thank you so much. I understand you. Im a year into trying abstract. I still dont totally get it all, but im at the point of learning depth, value, composition, and what have you. I have bought every tool imaginable, every color, but tend to go for the same colors and tools. I need to try different color combos and different marks from the tools. Thank you again.
@dianecharest8365 I am starting an online small mentoring group tomorrow. 5 Wednesdays, 11-1 Pacific time. Only $150 for all 5 weeks. This will be perfect for you. If interested please see details and register @www.ianiworkshops.com Good luck.
Im glad i found you. You are a phenomenal artist.
@@dianecharest8365 thank you. You sure perked me up today!
Hope you’re in your boot and healing well! Be patient. ❤ Ice and elevation are key. My husband (64) had foot surgery and had the boot 7 weeks. Never had to do crutches. Yes he got sick of the boot, but stayed in it. 👍🏼 gradually dropped that after another 8-10 days. Now walking pretty well but has to watch how long he’s up and about and how far he walks. So just be patient with your ankle-think of how good it’s been to you all these years. 🥰 I like your videos and your style!

I have used Dorlands Wax medium on watercolors that are mounted to cradled panels. I really love the finish on those. I have been doing gel printing and I wonder if after I do a panel with collage if this wax would be a good technique. Do you think it is the same material?
@@viviandibrell849 I think it should work just fine. Experiment before you try it on your finished piece
Thoroughly enjoyed your video, your art is exciting & wonderful. Your style of instruction is easy to follow . Thank You
@@mlr9370 thanks for reaching out. It means a lot
Diane, i am enjoying your videos. Thanks for sharing your tips. I like to use this underpainting method and paint my figures on with cold wax and oil paints. A bit challenging for figurative or landscape. But i like unclear soft edges for my expressive images. So, i keep trying and let it do its thing--just like you advice. ❤️
@MsOceanstar thank you for reaching out. Glad you are enjoying the videos
I LOVE that painting Diane. I am so glad you're getting back in your studio. Art is better than therapy. This is Kim KB!
Thanks, Kim. It's been pitmre cold wax for nearly 7 weeks! I'll be so glad to get back to my large-scale mixed media!
What is UVLS stand for. Very interesting in starting cold wax over acrylic. Great informational video
Ultra violet light stabilizer
Thank you for watching
Thank u. Have you ever used the cold wax for watercolor
Have you ever used cold wax with watercolor
I have not used cold wax with watercolor. I googled your question and many people do seal watercolor with cold wax. Give it a try and let me know what you think. I copied this from the internet: Whenever possible, we now wax our watercolors with Gamblin Cold Wax Medium. We first heard of this from renowned watercolorist Sarah Yeoman. At first, you may be reluctant to apply anything, much less wax, to the surface of a watercolor. Once you try it on a practice painting, you will be a convert.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this video, you have inspired me!
That means a lot to me. Thank you.
Can you crutch good?
Not at all! Can't seem to hop!
@@ianistudio Have you ever been on crutches?
Can't crutch at all
@@ianistudio Do you need surgery?

No, I can't do crutches at all. They scare me.
@@ianistudio Do you have crutches?

hello! I had an image printed directly on. a wood panel and I want to finish with cold wax. Do I need to add a leveling step before the cold wax? And how long does it take to harden so it would be ready to pack up after you buff it the last time? Thank you ! love your website
I might apply a layer of polymere mediums, and let it dry 72 hrs. Then a water based varnish with UVLS and let that dry 72 hrs. Then the cold wax layer, and let that dry approx 72 hrs after buffed. Cover the surface with glassine or wax paper before packing. You could try shortcuts by applying the wax directly to the print. As long as you cover the surface with glassine or wax paper you can pack it after 48-72 hrs.
Beautiful work!
Thank you! Much appreciated
please list your sander and your mask, thanks!
Fess Tool Evac sander
Actually that sander is Ryobi. These are corner sanders you can get at any hardware store. They are rechargeable
The sander is a Ryobi corner sander...rechargeable with a lithium battery. The mask is any good respirator mask that can be bought in a hardware store.
thank you for this beautiful video! i just wanted to ask you something for collages built up with "rice papers' and the isolation coat I apply before possibly waxing :-) I have the experience that any finishing/isolation coat I apply on rice papers soak in on some spots and on others not, which make it look like not everything is varnished, even if it is. Maybe you have some advice for a finishing coat on rice paper? so that i also can experiment with the cold wax medium. Thanks a lot in advance and sorry to disturb, Phil
Thanks, Phil. First, I do an isolation coat of polymere mediums. I thin it about 20-35% ( I use Golden polymere mediums). Let that dry 72 hrs. Then varnish with a UVLS varnish like Liquitex. Let that dry 72 hrs, then apply the cold wax medium. That should give you an even finish. Good luck, and let me know how it works.
@@ianistudio thanks a lot!
Genus Loci is tbe latin words.
Wow, thanks for that! A Sense of Place- Genus Loci
Is the wax on the rag flammable if left in studio??
I recommend a fire safe receptacle. I'm always cautious with oils, and the wax does contain resin.
I listened to your advise about primer from the hardware store vs. art store primer. Just bought a gallon of primer from Blick ❤
Probably a wise decision!
Where did you find that huge squeegee? Love it!
Squeege Press! Jerry McLaughlin and Rebecca Crowells company. They sell all sizes. Perfect for cold wax.
So sorry to hear about your broken bone, but it will heal and you’ve already figured out how to work with it so congratulations to you for that and a speedy recovery also. I do have a question for you. I’m considering purchasing a gallon of primer from Home Depot I just don’t think I need to spend big dollarson what they call the Art store primer I’d like your opinion
I used Home Depot primer for years and it worked well. The art store gesso is certainly more archival. It really depends on your level of selling. If you are selling your paintings for big bucks the collector deserves the better grade gesso. Otherwise, the hardware store primer will size your canvas and give you a fine surface.
I like your process and your tutorial. Overall, a great video. You might try matching the music volume to speaking volume. I kept having to increase volume when you were speaking and decrease it when the music played. Thanks!
Thank you. I need to get a mic to improve the sound! Point taken Thanks for watching.
What a pain! Interesting the first four letters of paint is pain! Appreciate your goal of not letting it stop you. Great to see you in studio. Keep on keepin' on!
Thank you. It is a healer!
When I book my ankle I could not use the knee scooter due to the massive amount of NERVE pain associated with a broken ankle, (there are so many nerves, and such a small space and swelling is a dozie.) One thing I underestimated is how much this affected my same side hip, (from not using the ankle or doing leg movements it is still stiff years later and now I'm working on it.) Oh I am so sorry this happened to you. I also remember that it is such a slow, very slow healing. There is not "feeling better" in just a couple of weeks, it takes practically 12 full weeks to start to have that "feeling better" phase. I wish this phase to come to you quickly and for your swelling to be diminished. HUGS. Now I'm going to watch the rest of this video. YOU can get through this and I wonder what the result of this side track will blossom into!! I am edited: When someone saw me struggling to walk into a store, (definitely feeling the burden and questioning my own sense,) a lady said to me, "OH, I broke my ankle once too, I know, people do not understand what this does to you emotionally." It is SO very true, this particular break, affects our emotions. It looks so innocent, a foot in a cast BUT, the amount of pain and restriction in movement is so truly humbly and a bit emotionally crushing. You are not alone, many of us have hobbled in your casts also. It is hopefully a brief time yet, lean fully into the limited capacity, without guilt or shame... Maybe your spouse needed this opportunity to be the here. Remember also that regarding estrogen versus testosterone...Men will get exhausted from caregiving because it releases Oxytocin, (women love it, men feel like a Mack truck hit them.) I learned from the author of Men are from Mars, women from Venus, on his oxytocin studies... Men get rejuvenated feeling like the true hero they are. So, instead of saying thank you to him, try, "you are my hero!!" "I couldn't have done this without you!" "Thank you" "YOU ARE RIGHT!!! with any suggestion he says that you like!!" Trust this will help him rejuvenate and likely help you too, knowing that you are boosting him in a way that may not hav3 happened before. Typos left.
Thank you for sharing your experience. So far the painting isn't too bad. I hope the surgery doesn't make the pain worse. Grateful I can use the knee scooter. Thanks for the advice on boosting my husband!
I definitely got excited with the pigments. I'm at 20 minutes in and was thinking about how we spread "diatematious earth" around the horse stalls, and if it would work here with a water misting first the canvas surface first, (we scoop the DE out of the bag with a kitchen serving utensils with holes in it and tap to sprinkle it down. OH gosh, now I want to try! Regarding your doggy loss, it is so difficult, I am sorry this happened.
The DE sounds like a great idea. I'd love to know the outcome. Thank you for honoring my loss. We actually lost two dogs and a pet rabbit last year. The good news is we got two pups, a Boston Terrier, and a pug. So I'm a new dog, mommy! Bandulu ( the BT) is 16 months, and the Pug is 22 weeks.
Thanks Dianne for your inspiration. Loved this! Subscribed!❤
So happy you enjoyed it. Love hearing from you ❤️
Thank you for this wonderful demonstration. I am now going to pick up my cold wax and oils!
So happy to inspire you
Oh gosh, I am such a fan of you and grateful for your videos and advice. Thank you for sharing your teachings. Last summer I enjoy creating art for my wellness business and both parents supported and encouraged me. I ended up getting a sander, beeswax, (the beeswax video is how I found you,) and ended up also doing some decoupage work! Granted I am new but, that didn't stop me from putting it up in a local store. Now that I've lost both parents over the winter and am coming up for air, I have opened up my own yoga studio-wellness shop in the Phoenix AZ area and will continue with the art. The studio is in the Arts district and I am super glad about all of this. Both of my parents said in their last months that I needed to "get out there," and now some 7 and 4 months after their passing, I will sign the lease. :) Thank you so very much I AN I studio!! I look forward to creating more, hopefully soon.
What a moving story.your parents were very wise. My son lives in Goodyear AZ and I visit often. Send me the address of your studio so I can visit!

Can you also use gold wax together with acrylic?
You can wait until the acrylic dries and go over the acrylic with cold wax. But not the other way around. Oil over water based, not water based over oil

@@ianistudio Thank YOU for sharing your work! M xx PS: I looked into your workshops. Sadly, I still work F/T otherwise I’d sign up for your Zoom meets. Also, located on the East Coast re: live classes.
Thanks so much. So interesting. BTW what is a gal kit?
Gamblin Galkyd oil medium
Contemporary Oil Painting Medium Galkyd is an alkyd resin painting medium that increases the fluidity of oil colours and speeds their drying time. Thin layers of oil colours are dry in 24 hours. The viscosity of Galkyd is similar to traditional painting mediums made from linseed stand oil. Galkyd levels brush strokes, creates a strong flexible paint film and leaves an enamel like glossy finish. Galkyd is ready to use. Thins with odourless mineral spirits. Painters can add up to 50% by volume odourless mineral spirits to change the viscosity of Galkyd for glazing. Galkyds are excellent glazing mediums. Specifications
Well thanks very much for that thorough explanation 🙂
Do you know if you can use cold wax to seal oil pastels?
@@ladynsearch-of-art I have never tried it, but it sounds interesting. Let the oil pastel dry thoroughly first and let me know how it works.
New to your channel. Love your natural presentation and subtle advice. I can gardly wait to wax an acrylic painting demonstrated in the first video I came across. That plastic surface is not inviting, though aspects of using acrylics are more suitable to me now. Thanks
Welcome. Let me know how the cold wax surface works for you.
Did one yesterday and love the satin finish. Gooped up another this morning and forgot about it until now. Haha. Hand buffed but may get a palm sander as my old bod needs help sometimes.
