I am happy for you that you were brave enough to come out to your family and friends. It's scary because you don't know how anyone will react no matter who they are. It hasn't always been safe for individuals to come out to others. When those you thought would react in a good way, and it turns bad, it's heartbreaking. Especially if the ones you tell become abusive in some type of way and rejecting you and not wanting you around anymore. I am glad your coming out was not too bad.

Silly. I did a physics Ph.D. and I always took time off. At least ten days between Christmas and New Years and at least one week during the summer to visit my family and they were 2000 km (1600 miles) away. I also played sports (summer and winter) and did other activities. If you don't the pressure will get to you and, who knows, you might kill yourself; something that is not unknown of. A guy I knew jumped off a bridge!! As a Ph.D. student you will likely work long hours as it is; so take the time to change your state of mind, forget about your project and realize that life is about more than just YOU and your PH.D. You'll live longer and happier!!
