I forgot to guess, I thought on 16m3 but now its to late , haha. Congrats to the winner and the others... 🙂
Haha, no problem. You were so close with 16
Oh wow, I don't know why that figure just popped into my head when you said guess how much timber was in there. I've dropped you an email. Your video's are a delightful rest bite from the rat race treadmill currently so a huge thank you for sharing them. Cheers Stu.
Thanks Stu
Well done Stuart the winner great guess buddy thanks Darren for the little competition buddy nice bit of fun more of them please and mate please don't send me any thing as I'm in France and its a night mere with customs and would be costly to you my friend take care and I'm looking forward to the next one all the best Budo
Thanks Budo, we’re happy to send you something.
I loved the shoutout and I love your treasures but I don’t want you to be stuck with postage to the US. Best wishes. Take care❤
Hi we don’t mind, I’ll leave it with you. Thanks so much
I appreciate the thought very much, but I don't want to stick you with postage from Great Britain to the US. :)
We don’t mind, it’s why we did it. I’ll leave it with you.
Thanks so much for the mention, love watching your vlogs. Spent the morning doing yard work and when I was finished, I looked like I had been rolling in the mud. I am restoring a back yard that has not had an ounce of work done on it is 6 years and have been fighting those dreaded blackberries since June and the tide has now turned and I am finally winning, Cheers from a very wet and soggy, Plessala France,
Thank you, by all means email and we’ll post you one of our hand made wooden items
Ayup Woodlanders. Congratulations to the winner. (Please contact me via email)
I purchased my back in 2004 , mine is still working fine, I am trying to listen to what you are saying, but you have music playing, I am now retired so I am serving my saw 2704 , it’s done thousands of hours of work, now living in France.
Ah gotcha so sorry you couldn’t hear, my edits were a bit novice. It’s a great saw, I’ve toyed with replacing it but I don’t use that often. All the best, Darren
Going to have a go at this tomorrow. First job make a splitting post and then I am off to cut some hazel that I coppiced about 5 years ago. Thank you for an excellent demonstration.
Sounds fantastic, hope you get on ok and never give up if it’s a bit tricky to start with. Take care, happy riving , regards Darren
Hello Darren great vlog and I loved the translucent mushroom it looked like a Jellyfish, I think around 😊28 cubic meters of wood. Cheers from France,😊
Why are you cutting hazel only every 7 years? I know in my oak forest just two years will yield a 2+ inch diameter, 10-ft rod. I have not yet grown hazel but does it grow so much slower than oak? I'm planning on hazel mostly for nuts and want shrub form rather than a tall tree but I see hazel is so popular a selection for coppicing I would like to know more.
7 years is a good average for hazel cycle cutting, it then provides a good selection of different rods for different products. Oak is a much different species and cannot be used for the same products as hazel. Hazel for nut production your better off looking for a cultivar known for nut production like Filbert. Also hazel for nut production is pruned selectively over the years rather than Coppiced at the bottom. Hope that helps. Happy hazeling.
Hi Darren I would say around 24 cubic meters or 847 cubic feet ish great video nice to see you back buddy
Thanks Budo, I knew I could trust you for some imperial conversion 😂 I’ll add you to the results. I’m measuring Monday and doing a little video for the winner
Great video, watched it some time back, enjoyed it again, thanks Darren 😁
Haha thanks so much, just a bit of fun
Nice saw work Darren, I'm thinking Birtch Alder willow ond Hazel, good firewood and fast growing but you already know that thanks for the video... super always 😁
Thanks you. We love variety
Thanks for a cool overview. I’m curious what type of milled wood you make your frames out of, and whether you ever make frames from larger hazel roundwood. My property here in Oregon, USA is absolutely riddled with our own native hazel trees called beaked hazel(nut) trees. I’ve been enjoying delving into some of the traditional uses for hazel in the UK and can’t wait to start coppicing and attempting projects like some panels for an outdoor shower. Thanks for your informative videos on the subject. Cheers!
Thanks so much. We use a pressure treated timber for the frames. I’ve also used roundwood, both hazel, sweet chestnut and Ash. They all do better with the bark removed. I did a project video ruclips.net/video/rxzxmgMQTeE/видео.htmlsi=lFXQQLSj71eu1xl6
Hope your projects go well. Hazel is fantastic wood
My best guess for the wood store ..... 7.17 m3. PS Glad to see you posting again and that Karen may be showing a bit of improvement. Also pleased to see you saving a few of the Ash to try to help with the genetics to withstand the die back disease.
Thanks so much.
Great news Darren, Karen is getting some fresh air will do her the world of good. Pleased you also managed a short holiday. Another great video
Thanks so much. All the best
Good to bump into you ar the APF yesterday. Your Ash trees are not looking very good, and i expect them to slowly decline. If they were planted then they will have similar DNA, and a very low resistance to ash dieback. Get em down while the timber is still usable. There are a surprising amount of healthy ash trees around me, if I were you i would be collecting seed from them and planting their seedlings out. Good idea to get the timber out whilst it's dry, who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Thanks Murray. These are the last of the ash in our woodland, the rest are coppice Regrowth which are nearly all dead. I’m hoping to get them all down next week. They’re all from the same stock so to see one with a relatively healthy canopy was a surprise, I think I’ll leave the good one in and if it dies it’ll add to the dead wood you keep hinting at😂 Must admit I’ve not seen ask keys for a while on our trees. Good to catch up mate. I’m stuck in traffic at the moment on the way to day 2 but looks like it could be dinner before I arrive
@@AbellTo Good man 👍 Dead wood is the answer to most things
Ayup woodlanders! We have much to catch up on in this video. Also what’s your best guess on the volume of wood in the new wood store? Write in the comments and we’ll pick a winner next week Thanks for checking in Darren
If you have time, selling parts from the van might be worthwhile. I've noticed that male ash don't seem to suffer ash due back, or at least not as badly. I'm assuming that saving seed from infected trees won't potentially throw an immune tree... Take things slowly, when you can.
I’ve thought about selling a few parts yes, trouble is space on the drive is prime real estate so could so without it hanging around too long. I’ve been led to believe seed from infected trees will also succumb. I let the self set stuff grow on just to see what happens
Don't forget to swap the badges over on the cars👌 That Ash tree could be a survivor, down Devon almost all i look at look knacked. I think down here the wet summer has given the sickest Ash trees a boost as some look better than last year.
Must admit a Mitsubishi sounds better that a Peugeot I hope the ash does survive, I’ve heard others say that some ash are looking better, let’s hope eh.
Thanks Darren, inspiring video, get well soon Karen ❤️
Thanks so much
Hi Darren. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing. It sounds like Karen is through the worst? I hope so. New car looks a good find, especially 3 miles away!!! that's crazy. Tear it up looks great. Give me the nod next year, I'd love to come and see what people are up too. You've been busy, all looking great from here. Speak soon Jamie
Thanks mate, I’m hoping things can settle a bit, I’m exhausted. The tear up was lovely, so much weaving talent. I hope to demonstrate next time. Take care Darren
I know it's not easy, but whenever you're feeling a bit down or like the pressure's mounting, remember that you are truly blessed. Watching your vids has been a pleasure, and I've enjoyed living vicariously through you. I'm going through big changes here and will very likely be losing my home shop and woods, moving to the city, because I've made a metric ton of mistakes in my life and now have to pay for them. It's a painful thing, in ways that I cannot even begin to describe, but there it is all the same. So bask in the beauty of the woods all around you and remember that you've got a wife and child who love you. There's a warm home to go back to at the end of the day. And your fans are appreciativeof your work. That's a blessing far more powerful than I would have ever imagined just a year ago, but it's easy to recognize it in others when you don't have it yourself.
Thank you for your kind words, I’m so sorry about your circumstances and what it means for you. I hope you get on ok. I have so much to be thankful for. Regards Darren
Darren, smart to start earlier than usual, outsmarting mother nature. Sorry about the challenges at home. Hang in there, your plate is always full. Thanks for kindly sharing, always interesting. Sincerely in San Diego California
Thank you, hopefully Karen will be home soon.
Good to hear Karen is on the upswing. Missed your vids but happy you took time off for fun and other things. My guess is 21 sq m. Take care.
Thanks and I appreciate your guess too, I will make a note of it.
So glad to get caught up here! Sounds like you almost have that storm rode out. Congratulations on the new work vehicle, sounds like you got a blessing there. Everything is good as can be expected here. Drought is getting old and dusty but rain should be coming by the end of the month.
We’re getting there I think, and yes the new work truck is going well so far. Glad things are ok your end too.
On the question of keeping the ash trees that look healthy at this point - Definitely keep them. The USA made a massive mistake with chestnut blight by cutting trees down before they could contract the blight. The reason that was a mistake is that if there were any native chestnuts with a natural immunity to the blight, we cut them down and prevented them from continuing and regrowing a resistant stand. Much wiser, imo, to let the tree stand so long as it appears to be healthy. There's time enough to take it down if it succumbs, but if it doesn't, then it's priceless ;)
Thanks, and that’s how I feel too, the UK native ash is an incredible timber and so versatile. I hope it continues to thrive. Lone ash seem better than ones in clusters for survival
Glad to hear Karren is a taking steps in the right direction. I'm looking forward to your APF video as I can't make it this year due to both health and commitments that you don't want to hear me rant on about. I could do with a small "affordable" front loader (ha!) to move the local arborists chip drops, something the size of a ride on mower but that can move dropped chip without me having to get off it and manually load it into a rear basket. I've been looking at electric car roof hydraulic systems to see if they would work but that's another project and I'm trying to avoid more projects as there is barely enough hours in a day as it is. Oh, I think you'll get 14.72m³ in your log store, I don't know why that figure popped into my head but thought I'd suggest it anyhow. Have a great time at the APF and look forward to the feedback and summary.
Yes it is a relief. Your front loader needs sound interesting. Maybe a rear transport box might work, many have a scrapper lip for backing into piles and a tip function. Thanks for the guess too I’ll add it to the list. All the best Darren
Glad to hear Karen is recovering. On the firewood storage - 29 cubic meters ;) Our temperatures here in Southern Michigan are in the 80's during the days, dropping into the fifties over night. I've been doing a fair bit of felling on our site over this past week or so.
Thanks so much and thanks for the guess, I’ll add it to the list. It’s cool here now in the evenings. Not many more BBQs this year
Enjoyed your catch up video Darren, also good to see Karen back in the wood again, hope she continues to improve. Can’t believe you are into felling already, you are putting me to shame! I’ll look out for you at the APF tomorrow.
Will do mate. I’ll send a message when we arrive.
Very pleased to hear that Karren is a bit better, interesting video, looking forward to seeing your view of the woodland show.
Thank you so much. Regards Darren
Sept 2024 update. Alas the Outlander has died, not due to the Turbo or engine but the dreaded rot on the subframes and rear tub. The oven cleaner always worked to solve my overboost issue and a good old wiggle of the actuator on the turbo. All the best keeping your Vag engine alive. Regards Darren
Hey just thinking about you and your family here this morning! I pray all is well and busy!
Thank you, yes things have improved recently. I'm looking forward to the forestry show tomorrow. Thanks Darren
Hope all is well with you and your family. Hope to see a new video soon.
Thank you, it’s been incredibly tough just lately, I hope to be filming next week and give an update
Good on ya. Its not easy living with someone with mental health issues. Thanks for chatting about it. I felt myself nodding and agreeing with you as you were talking. It's tough seeing the person you love go through that pain and there's nothing you can do for them. That was such a relaxing video full of productive days. I love seeing you go through your week and getting stuff done. Such a nice setup/yard, there amongst the trees.. Thanks for letting us see you work. Sometimes a few hours on the saw is the best medicine. Im taking my 11yr old to the field today with the branch logger, he loves feeding the branches..
Thanks so much, yes it’s been a difficult summer this year. Hope you had a productive day too, one of my fav jobs is feeding a chipper or branch logger
Hi Darren 👍 I've grown mushrooms in my briquettes mix. Not done the video yet. Worked brilliantly 👍 Jamie
Ooh fantastic! Hi mate how are you? Look forward to the video. Do mushrooms grown in coffee taste different…
If you have some oyster plugs left throw them in a tall bucket with a load of wood chips in it. Cover the top & drill holes in a similar fashion to the ones you did in the log and away you go… My neighbours have them growing in a plastic bag with straw and they are growing in our horse trailer in straw chaff. The prize is finding porcini though👍🏼
Great idea thanks, ah porcini’s I’ve tried twice but our woodland just hasn’t got the maturity in the soil to support them.
I've not done it as I've never had the time or plan, I'm still trying to plant more than I'm cutting down but do a youtube search for "ridgedale farm richard perkins mushroom logs". I can't see the exact video as it was probably 5+ years ago now but Richard has a world of knowledge on this subject and video talks/tours of people doing it commercially with sawdust which I'm sure you can create as a resource 😉 See you some time in the future when you pop back out of this rabbit hole 😁😂 Keep well... my ankle is about 80% now and getting better, I did stupidly pull my back again at the weekend, probably due to not doing any exercises and sitting on my ar$e for the last 8 weeks waiting for my ankle to heal after the op. Such is life! Cheers for the video. Stu
Looking at how you wrapped the logs in the landscape fabric, I have concerns about how that might encourage insect activity that could be harmful to your mushroom growing. I put my shiitake logs under a tarp cover, held off the ground on a few other logs. I want to say on the order of 18 months for the shiitake to flush.
Great advice I’ll take a look, I have some tarp that I could use instead if I find a problem in there.
A couple of notes: you can get an adapter and bit for your angle grinder, which will speed up the hole drilling a great deal. I prefer sawdust spawn to the plugs, both because the plugs require a specific size hole but the sawdust spawn really doesn't and because I feel it's better value than the plugs.
Brilliant thanks.
Darren, excellent vlog, I had thought about giving mushrooms a go, Perhaps I might have another look at it now. I wish you the best of luck with these and look forward to the updates, Cheers from Plessala France
Thank you, I’m going to give it another month and do a video update to see how things have progressed over the summer. I hope it works for you too
Another interesting video Darren! I’ve wanted to try this once we finally get access to our own space again so I’d watched a bunch of videos on the topic but didn’t know that it can be done any time of the year! And don’t worry I don’t know what I’m on about either 😂 When doing a project like this that you haven’t done before (especially if you’ve spent a bit of money) I try to tell myself part of what the money/ time is for is spent on is not just the end product, but the knowledge learned along the way!
Hope you get chance it’s quite an exciting project. You make a good point about the knowledge gained from trying things. If these don’t quite work then I’d have a go again
@@AbellTo Exciting and hopefully will fill your belly with things you can’t get in the supermarket, even better! Exactly, that’s most my natural crafts projects at the moment!
I did try growing mushrooms, the sort that grow on damp straw, about 30 years ago, but not since. I also enjoy Ben Law's books, good interesting video, best wishes to you and your family.
Thanks, that sounds interesting. I’ve watched where they do it with straw in buckets.
Very interesting. You are a good teacher.
Thank you that’s very kind, I tend to waffle
I have failed at this once before, but it would be nice to forage for your own mushrooms! I pray you have great success!
Thanks, shame your first attempt wasn’t great, maybe try again? All the best to you
It's something i've thought about doing but feel a bit out of my depth.....Can't wait to see your results......Could well inspire me to have a go. Thanks!
I felt that too, I was a bit overwhelmed by the fine detail, hopefully the video didn’t baffle you. I’ll definitely be doing an update this autumn
Ayup Woodlanders Let me know if you've tried growing your own mushrooms or if you'd like to. All the best Darren
I've done shiitake on oak logs, worked well. Also did King Stropharia in woodchips, again worked well. Tried oysters for breaking down cardboard and that first attempt was an absolute bust. I want to try that one again, because I see some real benefit in turning the cardboard waste stream into food on one hand and garden fertilizer on the other.
@@peterellis4262 that sounds great. Has cardboard been treated with ‘stuff’ like bleaches?
