He didn't die , at the end they looked into each other's eyes and saw that they had much in common and they had wild man-wolf sex. That scene proved too riskay for theaters so they had to cut it from the film. Basically the legend the legend of becoming a werewolf comes true and he goes on to have pups with the other wolves. The wolves didn't actually kill his group that was Liam Nelson's character turning into a werewolf and its how he found thier den at the end.

Liam's head is clearly resting on the right hand side of the wolf. Look closely and you will see the outline of his hair, skin, ear, etc.

The only thing we can say for certain is that he didn't go down without an impressive fight. I've seen this movie a bunch of times and never seen that post credit scene till tonight. I always wondered if he instantly got mauled or if he put up a good fight and atleast hurt a few wolves, now I have an answer.

​@@Bombo505man, I really try to understand it... I mean it is simple as seen. "I dont want to perish without a fight" is streaming from this ending. But what unsettles my disturbed mind after watching this is the lack of outcome. We are given this glimpse of the end, that both he and the Wolf are dying (John's death was a certainty for us, but our "reward" for watching till the end and not giving up after the end credits was to see the Alpha dead). I wish that there could be more, like comentaries from the director, or some narrator voice that is advicing us something like "this movie is about not giving up in the worst conditions". Anything would have been much better that leaving us with an open finale and making us chose what we want to believe after seeing all this mess...
