What is this on the paintings. Cheetos?😂
I’m assuming you are asking about the orange raised dots. They are small wooden pegs covered in accretion style encaustic brushing and fusing.
Single click showed me Meghan Kelly...obviously AI dubbed. Nope!
thank you and yes i am just a newbie and i want to embed a leaves and some seeds in the encaustic paintings i make. have you done this before? id love to see. someone mentioned they thought it might produce mold inside the painting so then i got worried (i am drying them as completely as possible and i hope to do this in the next couple of weeks!!
Hi JT - you absolutely can embed dried leaves and plants into your encaustic paintings. I do this frequently. You need to either press them or dry them out completely, or mold is a possibility. The plants will maintain their shape and color because beeswax is a desiccant. Make sure you have a really good connection between your natural object and your painting. I do a lot of layering and then a careful scraping back. Good luck!
You can see samples of my naturally embedded artwork here: www.mascreations.com/encausticmixedmedia
I tried copy paper with the iron. It came out cool.wanna see
I'd love to see what you did. Are you on instagram? You can find me at melissa_stephens1016 - DM me a photo!
I have a question.. doesn’t have to do with what your saying.. but I used some tpye of paper not sure what is is like a type of packing paper what I was doing was using it as paper underneath when I was creating my art canvas and the design became so cool that I cut it and I put it to an under painting in encaustic cradle board didn’t stay/ stick so I went and got a plain cradleboard and I didn’t put any wax on it underneath and it did it here by putting some of the wax on top but the side started lifting up and I put some PVC glue underneath and that’s not working so I’m really at a loss of why it’s not sticking the paint underneath was some Tim Holtz distress, gray and some Indian ink. I can’t imagine that the distress spray paint is the reason it’s not sticking I don’t know what else to do if I pull it off, there’s a glue I think the board is just trashed unless I can take a torch and try and make a scene. I don’t know could you give me a suggestion please
If your packing paper has any kind of slick plastic on it, that could be problematic. If it's more like brown craft paper, there really shouldn't be an issue. What kind of paint or materials are on the packing paper? Perhaps that could be the problem. If you find the edges lifting when using encaustic paint to adhere your paper, warm your sides gently until soft, but not molten and use an awl shaped tool to push the edges down. Then fuse gently to "heal" the hole from the awl. The last suggestion I would make is to try using E6000 Industrial Strength Adhesive.
I think a warmed loop tool and a warmed panel are key to a satisfying scoop out. It reminds me of those carved dipped candles of my youth. Remember those curved loop layers of multicolored candles? The ones your mom never lit the wick? Lol 😂 yes that takes me back!
Oh my - you are taking me back! Yes! I remember those fondly. My mom had a beeswax one with ridges on it resembling the hexagon shaped hives.
You are so charming & so thorough with the info. Just wanted to tell you & have great days.
Thank you so much!
Hi I just found your site. Very interesting. I am new to this medium although I am a mixed media artist I am learning to do Encustaic. I have made several pieces. Do you have to rub each one when your picture or art piece is completed? Also are the pieces of art when done are they supposed to be a tacky kind of feel? Have you used any pigment sticks and if so, could you tell me how they were used and do you need to put a wax film over them and then hit it with a heat gun or do you just leave it? If so won’t they come off. Sorry I am asking you all these questions. I see you totally understand the process. I loved the apricot seeds that looks so cool. Thanks 🌻
You seem to have a lot of questions. I highly recommend that you read Encaustic Art: The Complete Guide to Creating Fine Art with Wax by Lissa Rankin. Great for beginners with references and how to's and related images. To answer your initial questions: To create that delightful shine that occurs as a result of the damar resin, you can use a jewelry free palm of your hand or a lint free cloth to buff the surface of your painting. However, this is not a requirement. It does give the viewer more depth and offers a beautiful surface. Completed work should not be "tacky" or sticky to the touch. It may feel this way while still warm. It should be cool and smooth (or textural, depending!) You will need to review the ingredients of your encaustic paint if it is not cooling/drying properly. Best use of pigment sticks is minimal. You can use them to fill thin carved lines, or paint with them on the surface of your encaustic painting but the amount of encaustic paint should always outweigh the amount of pigment stick. This is a great article by RF Paints about uses and dangers of pigment sticks, including a chart. static1.squarespace.com/static/5594060be4b03822e68a2635/t/60ca16adff92e32a59bb861a/1623856813801/Technical+Sheet+-+Combining+Oil+and+Wax.pdf Please visit my website and contact me directly with any other questions you may have. Great explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Can you use Vaseline instead of a blending stick ?
My first response would be, no. Vaseline is a petroleum product that would be dangerous when heated. On the Vaseline website it states: “When heated to extremely high temperatures of more than 400 degrees Fahrenheit, Vaseline® Jelly may give off flammable vapors.” A torch and heat gun give off more than 400 degrees of heat. For this reason, I would stick with the product that is made for encaustic paint. The blending stick is less expensive than the pigment sticks and you can buy a big jar of it for even less money. Good luck!
Fantastic! Thank you.
Thanks for your comment. I appreciate your enthusiasm.
Thank you so much I used dark colors and thick found objects. I was very happy with the colors and everything bonded well within the layers but it dried cloudy If I heat it up again will the cloudiness melt away Thanks again
Hi Harold - I’m glad to hear that my video helped you to embed your objects. If you are getting cloudiness or bloom, use a lint-free cloth or pantyhose to buff your cooled surface area. Bloom is a natural phenomenon in beeswax caused by a chemical reaction from heating that results in the paraffin rising to the surface. If buffing doesn’t work, try a combination of low heating (below melting point) and buffing once it cools completely. Good luck!
Wow ! Love the ribbon cut with the round tool - very organic , colourful and interesting . Thank you Melissa - really glad I found your channel . Kind regards - Judi - Australia

Thank you for your praise. I appreciate your saying so.
I enjoyed your detailed explanations! I think explanations require talk. LOL!
I treated this video like one of my classes. It’s a lot of information. Thanks for your comment & support!😀
I haven't seen any encaustic artist explain all the different heat sources and differences between the torches until I came across your channel. This was very helpful, thank you!
I’m glad you found it helpful. There are so many choices out there. It’s good to make informed choices.😉
Far too much talk..
Thanks for your comment. Chalk it up to an education! This was one of my very first live videos. Hopefully I've gotten better as time has gone on - but I am a bit chatty anyway. :)
