Melodic Techno | Opening for Lauren Flax at Public Works (2017)
Просмотров 1885 месяцев назад
My DJ journey began in the Boston underground in 2013, but it was after moving to San Francisco in 2016 that I began playing nightclubs, eventually sharing the stage with amazing artists such as Charlotte de Witte, DJ Minx, Shiba San, Oceanvs Orientalis, Brodinski, and more. Things were different in those days. DJing was about Soundcloud over Instagram, and I have so few videos of those incredi...

Thank you! I wish. I don't have many clips from back in these days, but a lot of the music I was playing around this time will appear in this (audio only) guest mix for Noctuary, the same group that threw this event with Lauren Flax: on.soundcloud.com/5tb3fnoLocGjNPXW6

🎧 Having 3 or 4 CDJs opens up a range of possibilities that aren’t feasible with 2. It’s natural to be a bit nervous at first, especially since few ppl have 4 decks at home. Here are some things you can do on a bigger set-up & common mistakes to prevent: 1️⃣Enhanced Mixing Techniques e.g. double & triple drops, extended blends, for smoother transitions & more consistent energy flow. 2️⃣Layered Mashups & Remixes Play multiple tracks simultaneously on different CDJs to add depth & complexity. Some DJs isolate elements (e.g vocals, melodies, lows) by CDJ for the whole set to keep things straight. 3️⃣Live Editing & Sampling Loop & manipulate tracks in real-time, chop up samples, & layer elements. I love using clips from speeches, movies, & personal recordings on 4 decks because they enable quicker transitions with those short clips. 4️⃣Genre-Bending That extra deck can allow you to play with different genres & styles of music more smoothly. Did you know Trance is ~2x a lot of Hip Hop bpms? You can do a lot creative genre-bounces while leaving the home Groove playing on a 3rd or 4th deck. 5️⃣Advanced Cue Point Management More CDJs mean more cue points, allowing for more precise track navigation. 6️⃣Dynamic FX Integration Dedicate 1 or more CDJs to FX processing to apply them to individual tracks or the entire mix, adding depth, texture, & excitement. 7️⃣If all else fails, a 4th CDJ makes an excellent drink holder. Venues love that 😉 Still nervous? Prepare against these common pitfalls: • Track Selection: Organize your music library & set crates • Syncing: Master beat matching fundamentals. Sync button can help align 3+ decks, but do NOT rely on it • Cluttered Mixes: Frequency balance, EQ each track appropriately & use filters strategically • Accidental Plays/Stops: Pay attention. Know what each CDJ is being used for at all times & turn volume fully down when not in use • Technical Issues: Ask for equipment details in advance, carry drive backups, reset decks each time & have contingency plans Ready to try? 💬 Comment your experiences ♥️ Follow for more DJ tips & clips ⬇️ Save this for later

‼️ DJs, STOP playing boring sets..👇🏾 🎧 I’ve been DJing for 11 years, & with Techno gaining in popularity, I’m hearing more sets that are… well, let’s use the technical term: not very 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜. Song selection & stage presence are crucial ofc, but even with that, sets can fall flat. Here are 7 things you can start doing today to take your techno (or any genre) to the next level. 1. Phrasing: Aligning & mixing tracks based on musical structure (e.g. rhythm, vocals) 🛠️Prep & Tools: Cue points, Loops, Basic knowledge of song structure 📈Dancefloor Impact: Builds & releases tension, Cohesion 2. Harmonic Mixing: Mixing tracks in compatible musical keys & strategically using key/tonic changes 🛠️Key detection software, Camelot’s wheel 📈Heightens emotion, Reduces dissonance 3. Quick FX & EQ cuts: Bursts of effects (1/4 note or less) or cutting low/high end for 1-4 bars 🛠️FX & EQ panel familiarity 📈Adds variation, Builds & releases tension 4. Drama: Using silence, breakdowns & atypical instrumentation at key set moments 🛠️Understanding of track structure, Discipline (loses impact with overuse) 📈Creates contrast, Emotional connection 5. Unconventional transitions: Using unexpected techniques, e.g. Gallop, Tempo Halving/Hopping, Arrhythmic Mixing, etc to switch tracks 🛠️Experimentation & practice, Cue points, Tempo panel familiarity 📈Adds excitement & novelty, Keeps audience engaged, Grabs attention 6. Easter eggs: Personalizing sets live or in advance with custom edits, mash-ups or references tailored to event or crowd 🛠️Internet resources, Basic audio editing 📈Makes the set feel “special” & memorable 7. “2:1 Rule:” Maybe my biggest secret weapon 🤫 For now, let’s leave it at: Mix it up every 3rd song. How & why this works deserves its own video- coming soon! 🛠️Diverse & organized music library, Basic music theory knowledge 📈Prevents monotony, Expands set appeal, Sets up subconscious pattern with crowd 💬Comment if you want more live set hacks & techniques! ❤️Follow me for more DJ clips & tips ⬇️Save this for later 🎥 Mundo Cruz (@mundocruzofficial) 📍LICKNDIP (Los Angeles)

Addicted to excuses? Break free now ⛓️‍💥 👇🏾 If you have time for Insta, you have time to advance your DJ career. I used to do the: “oh, I have to do XYZ in an hour, so I’ll do DJ stuff when I have more time.” It’s an excuse, & it’s tired. When I quit cigarettes (the 1st time 🙄), I read a craving only lasts 15 minutes. So, I wrote out a list of 15-min tasks I could do to take my mind off smoking. By the time I was done, the craving would have passed. If we consider procrastination or excuses an addiction, the same approach can apply. Here’s a starter list that will help at any stage of your career 👇🏾👇🏾 1️⃣ Practice a Specific Mix Transition: Focus on perfecting a particular transition technique or a creative scratch routine. Find a few on RUclips & have them saved, so you can hop right in when you have a free moment. I’ll post a few next week. 2️⃣ Send Personalized Emails: Draft & send personalized emails to local venues & events expressing your interest in performing there, highlighting your experience & providing links. 3️⃣ Update Social Media Bios & Links: Update your bios to reflect any recent gigs, collaborations, or achievements, & ensure that all relevant links are up to date. Set up your RA or LinkedIn. 4️⃣ Engage: Respond to comments & messages on your social media platforms, or reach out to people who follow similar DJs, events, & hashtags. 5️⃣ Research Trends: Explore new music trends & emerging artists within your preferred genre. Got a gig next month? Set up a playlist to dump random finds until you’re ready to prep. 6️⃣ Find & Submit Mixes to DJ Competitions: Research upcoming competitions or showcases in your area or online, noting submission deadlines & requirements. 7️⃣ Create Content: Quickly create & schedule social media posts promoting upcoming gigs, new mixes, or collaborations. 8️⃣ Review Analytics: Peep the insights on your socials to ID trends in engagement & adjust your strategy. 9️⃣ Schedule Ads: Promotions fuel growth. Set one or two $5 ones up. 🔟 Create an EPK: Use a site like Bandzoogle to make a polished one quick! That’s it! 💬 Comment which you’ll try 1st ♥️ Subscribe for more DJ tips ⬇️ Save this for later

🚀 Quitting DJing saved me, here's why: In 2019, I walked away from the spotlight, ditching gigs, connections, and even my socials after crushing social anxiety. I focused on climbing the corporate latter, and DJing became a bedroom hobby once more. But quitting wasn't the end; it was a rebirth. After my dad's passing in 2023, music became my solace. So, 4 years later in a new city, I returned to the scene. A lot had changed, but so had I. Here's what I learned: 1️⃣ Stepping back gave me clarity. It wasn't just about the music; it was about sharing it and my passion with others. 2️⃣ Resilience? I got it now. It hasn’t been easy, especially after suffering a personal loss. Every setback affirms my commitment. 3️⃣ Authenticity is key. Finding my true artistic voice and authentic sound back in the “bedroom” gave me the confidence to own the stage and weather those moments of doubt and anxiety. 4️⃣ Community matters. Surrounding yourself with support is crucial for encouragement and growth opportunities. 5️⃣ Patience pays off. Rebuilding takes time and persistence. This is also key for any musician wanting to navigate the industry with its many ups and downs. 6️⃣ Growth happens outside your comfort zone. Embrace discomfort; it leads to evolution. 7️⃣ Focus on your passion. Let go of what doesn't serve your purpose. For me, that meant quitting my corporate job this past February. 8️⃣ Self-care is non-negotiable. Read that again. Being a DJ is demanding. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Now, I prioritize balance, even if it means saying no to gigs or leaving earlier than I would before. It may slow my growth now, but it’s sustainable and healthy for me. So, yeah, quitting can be a game-changer. Just make sure you're quitting the right thing. 🔥
