Carl Clements always sounds like he is singing to me, and never just playing notes. Kevin Kastning has always been an explorer on the guitar. He is playing the 30-string Contra-Soprano guitar, which may not be the one in these pictures. I think there are two necks on that guitar to accommodate that many strings. The whole composition is melody in these collaborations. There are two musicians composing as they play. It sounds to me like they are reading an invisible score. This is so much bigger than the usual "improvisation" on a blues progression it would be like comparing a star fish to the Crab Nebula. I had to learn to listen again to take it all in.

Kevin Kastning's music is like meditation: I feel a great deal of searching, some distractions, and a limitless world of partial melodies. Soheil Peyghambari is new to me. I love the way he flows through the impossible changes as a creature unconcerned with infinite changes accepting everything and moving along with joy. This music teaches me to accept my own thoughts without organizing them into little false narratives. I never feel that with the marches and waltzes on the pop charts. Yay!

This sounds to me like some of the very precise music I heard at CalArts from composers inventing new forms of notation. But this flows along without the jagged edges of the strictly notated 1970s composers. New composition used to take more work to listen to, but this feels good without pandering to the tried and true. It helps me to forget that they are improvising. Sure that’s astonishing, but this music works better when I forget to be impressed and just feel the flow and let my imagination take the journey. It just sounds great.
