Male Modeler
Добавлен 21 янв 2014
Let's build some models!!! As a self proclaimed scale model addict, my aim is to share my thoughts and experiences with others, while documenting my builds to help others that are new to the hobby. I have been building scale models for years and have learned from experience, as well as the wealth of information here on youtube. I want to add to the available content, building mainly armor, along with some planes and the occasional car model.

I've bought three 1/72 Airfix kits in their (early) Black Friday event and not having built a kit since I was a kid I'm looking forward to this 👍
They're having an early black friday event? I'll alert my wife the credit card bill is about to get bigger! They really are great kits for getting back into scale model building and aircraft in general. There are tons of great options for aircraft, but given my limited space, I think they're just perfect for 1/72 scale in general. Enjoy the builds when you get them!
Great job
@@peterjean5761 thank you!
I use rubbing alcohol (90%) to mix mine. Never had a problem and dries very fast and even. I also use the same thinning method you showed but only when I know I'll be using that entire bottle in the next 2-3 days. If not, I'll just start with a 1:1 ratio
@@intensity.density2208 thanks! I always wondered if regular old rubbing alcohol would work and figured it would! I'll give that a try cause its far cheaper than their branded thinner
Looks great! One question... Did you have issues with the top hull part mating with the two lower side hulls? I've seen this kit built by a few folks and there is a large noticable gap where these parts mate and doesn't look good compared to real thing. I have this kit but haven't begun yet and am a bit worried about this issue...
Thanks! To answer your question, YES i had a big problem with the top fitting AND the back plate. If you look, i had to do some filling, sanding and even with that the rear light has no room to breathe and the seams aren't perfect. I tabled it for a couple weeks, got frustrated and decided to finish it no matter how it looked because I had put so much time into it. All in all, despite the issues they're hardly noticeable once its all done and weathered at first glance. If you inspected it you can tell for sure, but on the shelf it looks great
There dont appear to be any indicator marks where to fit it exactly together, i spent a couple nights wondering where I went wrong, so try to identify where it should fit before hand. I spent a long time dry fitting and this was the best I could get
@malemodeler7 it looks good. Way better than the others. I may try gluing together first...thanks!
@ yeah it’s definitely an interesting challenge. What I know I did wrong was paining the outside before glueing and applying decals. I had faith I could make it fit so just wait on the decals on the outside :)
@malemodeler7 It looks like you did a good job. I built a lot of the dragon kits of this vehicle and had the same issues you did with this one. It's not easy due to the interior being so visible and having to paint the interior first. So I will attempt to glue the side lower hulls to the top hull first and then attach the entire upper hull to the chassis after I deal with the interior parts. It may not work but it's worth a try. Anyway, nice job.
It's a good kit and I have two in the stash thing to watch out for is the idler. You see Tamiya decided to mold the spindle directly to the rear plate which in turn limits the track tension. You'll defo find slack in the link and length tracks even glueing each link super tight still gives a loose fitting so ...... surgery is need to adjust that spindle which btw is no problemo if you just make/cut the spindle and shift it rearwards a few mm if that even and viola perfect looking track /sag and all my friend 😀
@@axesspeaklouderthanwords8077 yeah i did notice this. The tracks fit super tight together but there is some room in between each individual piece which makes them very workable. I had a better time building those than I have with other tamiya link and length tracks so far so maybe their way of making it work better?
@@malemodeler7 Oh I hear you on the tracks which look the part and I like the sag in places that should sag 😁. The tracks are very late style (which I like) and not many maufactures supply them in kits though Border Models do in their late Pz.IV Ausf.J and the new Jagdpanzer IV/70 (V) Late. How I managed to get the track tension was (1) flatnose plyers (2) apply to the to the spindle where in real life it would turn (3) gently twist upwards just enough to see slight movement and that's it. Course others will just bin the tracks and go AM but no need to really imo. Saying that the cost of 3D printed tracks is getting more affordable nowadays with plenty to choose from. Now if you want a real pain in the ass Pz.IV/70 (A) look no further than Tristar or Dragon thus the reason I was over the moon with Tamiya's offering 😀
@axesspeaklouderthanwords8077 yeah i saw someone post a video comparing this tamiya kit to the dragon kit and all they said was "well i didnt finish the dragon kit" and my decision was made 😂😂😂 After building this truly is a 10/10 kit. Pretty much as perfect as any kit ive ever built
@@malemodeler7 😅so true. Excellent detail on the Dragon kit but for the love of God fit issues galore
Hi I've built this kit, it's excellent well worth getting
@@StephenBaird-cp1fc couldn't agree more! I think Tamiya found a great way of engineering the kit so it doesn't feel like you're building "yet another panzer"
Panzer IV / 70 (A) was designed and manufactured by Alkett; Panzer IV /70 (V) by Vomag.
@@mirrorblue100 ahh good to know appreciate the insight!
The A was designed by Alkett, but I believe that it was built by Niebelungen.

New subscriber here. I enjoyed your review on this kit. Definitely something I would like to have in my stash. I like the metal barrel and prefer those over the split barrels. @@Ken_H_ thank you! I had a realization the other day that there is so little information on this airbrush on youtube and it's what I've used for years and couldn't be easier to use really
With mottled camo it can be fun to use a small bit of sponge to apply the paint. it gets rid of the directional stroke that the brush leaves - treat it a bit like dry brushing - dip the sponge in the paint then dab some off on some spare cardboard. then do the mottling on the model - practice on some card first - I think it is quite effective
@@digitalcareline ill have to give that a shot and look up some videos on it. It does sound like it would be useful for preventing those brush lines!

Nice!
The Tamiya 1/35 Panther A. It's very cheap for the scale and it's super easy to build with it's low parts count - AND it's big from a newbie's perspective , so you feel like you're building something impressive over a 1/72 kit. Actually, most of the old Tamiya kits that were originally built to be motorised from the 1970's , as again they have a low parts count and are simplified compared to later kits from various manufacturers. The old Matchbox 1/76 kits, later released by Revell are what I cut my modelling teeth on. Coming with their own diorama base, they just blew me away in the 70's as a young kit, especially when other kits were dearer and didn't have a "Cool scene" to go with them. Same with the Matchbox range of aircraft. Low parts count on the smaller 1/72 fighter planes, 2 or 3 colour kits with "no need to paint". Boy, there were some weird colour combinations back then !
@@ianbeale2527 I've actually never built their Panther but have heard the same feedback, my buddy built it later in his modeling life and said it was too simple for him, but that usually means perfect for beginners and i think its their 2nd or 3rd cheapest kit. Good suggestion!
@@ianbeale2527 i also have one of those matchbox jagdpanthers, which was a fun build with a mini base of rubble, just wasnt able to find any available online so i left it out :/
@@malemodeler7 Revell have once again resurrected the old 1/76 Matchbox kits, but this time under the banner of, "My First Diorama". Not a bad thing in itself - but the price point is just too high considering the mileage Revell have gotten out of these 50 year old moulds.
@@ianbeale2527 oh i had no idea they were still around. Youre right though, im seeing a nice Wespe in a desert scene but its $35... :/ I'd totally build that for $10 which mustve been what I bought the jagdpanther for. I dont remember spending over $20 for anything that first year i was building models. I remember trying to hide a $40 tamiya valentine out of fear of judgement from my wife 😂😂😂
Tamiya got me into the hobby , rarely build them now :) Great vid mate :)
@@petethescalemodeller6130 its never too late to start building or pick the hobby back up! Glad you enjoyed the video though, well get some more in the works
Each of your choices are good ones for easy building, learning painting techniques with a brush or airbrush or weathering. Hard to argue with your choices.
@@alansimmonds9651 appreciate the feedback! I got some kits in today and plan on doing some brush painting on them as I know not everyone has an airbrush
If you don't want to paint it grey, there were dark yellow with green and/or red brown camo versions after 1942 as an option.
I tend to be a rule follower when I build models, although I'm getting away from it with my Crusader, so hopefully there are more of these kits in my future and I venture out a little. The grey looks good, it's just a little boring :). Love the suggestions though!
One tip in case you didn't know - when you attach the top hull to the bottom hull sides make sure the top hull has a tiny lip overhanging the two lower hull sides. I made the mistake when I built my older dml kits when I added putty to the sides and made the lower hull sides flush with the top hull - which is incorrect. Look at pictures of the real ones and you'll see what I mean.
I have some sanding and putty work to do, the kit is a little stalled at the moment because of that. I have some pictures I just saved to my computer based on your input though, so hopefully I can recreate it as you're saying! Appreciate the tips!
@@malemodeler7 mind if I ask what you have to putty and sand? It may help me when I start mine...
So right now I have a bunch of different sanding sticks, I use these the most, plus you get every grit you need basically for about $5: www.migjimenez.com/en/tools-brushes/4877-tapered-sanding-sticks-6-pcs-amig-8567.html In terms of putty, I have the classic white tube of Tamiya, but it really stinks to apply. I thin it a little with thinner and then use a tooth pick and try and paint it into the groove. I am getting Mig's new putty though in a couple days, it comes with an applicator and in different viscosities, so interested to see if that will help me not make such a mess. The kit in general has good fit, It just doesn't have precut area's or markings for where to attach the sides, and mine ended up being a little tight, so the fit is off. It is technically user error, but you need to build it in these sub assemblies, so you don't know until you've already painted, decaled and sealed areas, so I want to see if I can be more delicate with the mig putty.
Whether you're a beginner or intermediate, Tamiya is the best model kit. Because many Chinese model brands ( Takom, Dragon, Trumpeter, Border...etc) have too many parts unnecessary, the parts don't fit that well. Tamiya kits usually easier to build, detailed yet not too cluttered/ too many parts. No other brands can't beat Tamiya for its engineering, fits like Lego blocks , easy to follow manuals, and the best box art, Tamiya's kits quality.
Yeah I wanted to do something other than Tamiya, but it's almost impossible even to find singular models, let alone entire companies that fit like Tamiya. Some of the new Airfix is really good for aircraft though. I'm building an undisclosed model right now (video will be up in a couple days), that honestly fits like Tamiya, which is great to see. I'm with you on the small parts though, there is a time and place for it, but I don't enjoy kits that are 1200 pieces when they could be 500 or whatever. I'm in the hobby to have fun! Not lose more than 2-3 parts per kit under my chair :)
Really enjoying your content- wish you every success in growing your channel- good advice in this one - the “antennas” on the front of the half track are “width indicators” - mine broke also lol - admire you for finishing the Academy Hellcat - it was the first kit I ever gave up on - but I loved the newer Tamiya M18 - take care!
@@SchmidtJim thanks for the kind words! I feel like its important to be realistic and honest. If youre not breaking your antennas you're probably lying 😂😂😂
It's a nice kit. I built it maybe 20 years ago from the original Italeri boxing. The addition of the new figures by Tamiya is a good touch.
@@georgecoventry8441 im currently painting it, it ended up building up quite nicely. Youll see when i post that, the gun barrel was in a ridiculous condition, but it all came together. Id love to see tamiya take the crusader and do an entirely new tool on it. Itd be great to see what modern engineering could do with a tank with so many angles
Border's kit is vastly superior though
@@intensiveintensives4887 - Ah! I didn't even know Border had done a kit of the Crusader tank.
@@intensiveintensives4887 it does look very nice. Much more modern rendition from what i saw. Ill just have to build that one for comparison i guess 🙂
@@malemodeler7 Why not get both, hehe... BT-015 kit is especially great: comes with the beutepanzer decal variant, German DAK tank commander (if I recall correctly) of excellent quality, some PE, 2 metal gun barrels (main gun and coaxial MG), workable tracks (some pinmarks, unfortunately) and just overall great quality. Every bolt and rivet looks just great
Cool models.
Glad you like them!
I really like them and have been using 22 of the colours/tones for around two weeks on 15mm Plastic AFV kits and 1/56 scale hard plastic kits and see them as another tool in the tool kit
have you had any issues with them at all? I have been using them with primed and unprimed plastic. 90% of the time, they work perfectly. One time I had the paint start to crackle and then peel off, which was weird because it was primed paint and I used it on additional pieces of that kit and had no issue. I think maybe it's something with the Takom plastic? It happened on the halftrack and then also I used the flat black to paint the steering wheel, let it dry for days and my clear coat stripped the paint off the steering wheel.
@@malemodeler7 I have had no problems so far but will keep an eye out for it. I hope they develop more colours and tones down the line
@@dm51964 yeah i want every color imaginable and for them to do like a fine, normal and wider version of the markers or something. That way you can use a little more finesse or get a wider brush for bigger areas. Its so nice that they make painting lazier and easier 😂
@@malemodeler7 Agree on all points lol
Very much agree’re the M41 Bulldog. Fantastic kit and a big model at 1/35 and so cheap to pick up. With regard to the Airfix starter sets - i think there is some confusion between gift sets and starter sets. The airfix starter sets have paints, glue and brush, a shadow stand and a simplified parts count and additional information sheet with modelling hints. As far as im aware the new starter range has 4 aircraft, 3 tanks, and a few small cars. I think you might be showing the old airfix starter range? As for tamiya aircraft suitable for beginners- their 1990 range of 1/48 aircraft are also recommended.
@@stephenwhelan2515 yeah ive found a lot of different airfix starter sets. Theres like 5 different spitfires alone all from.different years i guess. If you look at their website it says they have 0 starter and 0 gift sets. Ebay says differently tho :)

2 models I would recommend for newbies who want to do something a little challenging paint wise but easy to build would be the Tamiya Matilda II and R35 light tank kits. Relatively new kits with good clean parts, lovely detail and very easy to put together. The reason I would recommend them is that there are all sorts of crazy and interesting colour choices to pick for them so newbies can use them as a good way to learn "basic" but extremely helpful painting techniques and touch into doing things such as masking tape/putty lines to make interesting patterns on the armour. The Matilda has a lot of interesting desert/med colour schemes such as caunter (AK interactive make a ready good caunter kit) and the box camo on the R35 is also really fun to do. (The R35 would be a good way to get into using markers too for the bold black lines which help to cover up any little mistakes in painting too) And ofc, when ready, great models to use for trying out things like weathering powders/oils on too, a lot of nice little detail points to test things on.
Ive been eyeing that Matilda for a long time! There are so many good "beginner kits out there, namely half of tamiyas armor. I just found that so many of these first kits that are being recommended are 30-50 dollar kits and theres more than a couple under $20 that are great for those first couple. I remember the first time i spent $50 on a kit. I never really went back from there and wish i built more 18 dollar kits 😂😂
I heartily agree. The Matilda is a superb kit. I painted it in the caunter scheme and enhanced it with some Miniart North Africa figures riding on top. I also have the French R35 in my stash, which I am looking forward to building. It's a cute little tank! They are the right balance of detail and complexity and as always with Tamiya beautifully engineered and packaged.
@@Mike-mm4mx i just watched a build video for the Matilda, but am already over my stash limit. It looks like such a classic Tamiya kit! I need to building something quick so I can get one 😂
