Travel, Diuretics & Toilet Issues, Heart Failure Clinic at Royal Papworth, Cambridge
December 2023 - I'm sharing an update on my health journey, starting with a recent trip to the US where I took a more balanced approach to travel. I recount a humorous yet challenging incident on a boat trip due to medication side effects. The main focus is my recent annual review at the Royal Papworth Hospital, where transplant specialists reassured me of stability despite initial apprehension. Grateful for the medical team's support, I reflect on the past year's opportunities and overall well-being.

Summary: Latest update from December 2022 - In October 2022, my life has taken me to various places across London, the Netherlands, and France. A particularly exhausting day involved an accidental 18,000-step walk through London with old university friends. My dad's birthday celebration followed, and then I traveled to France, where I had a moment of physical breakdown upon arriving. It made me...
Check ups, Papworth Good News All Round

Summary: During my time away, I had a check-in with Dr. Sekri, one of my main consultants at Barts. It turned out to be quite amusing because I was feeling exceptionally well. It was actually one of her colleagues who called and, perhaps due to a run of less optimistic calls, seemed surprised by my positive outlook. I couldn't help but reflect on how great I was feeling and how it reaffirmed my...
Tennis Anyone the importance & value of sharing if you have a condition

Summary: In the summer, I rediscovered the joy of playing tennis after many years. It was a fun and invigorating experience, though both my partner and I were far from being experts. Despite the doctors' advice against competitive sports, tennis turned out to be more physically demanding than I expected. Playing with a friend who was much better than me was both enjoyable and a reminder of my l...
Loosing my Taste, Covid, Transplant Assessment & Back to the Mountains

Summary: Towards the end of March, I found myself in the mountains, not feeling well due to a mild cold. Despite a negative lateral flow test, I soldiered on with my brother and his girlfriend visiting. They brought three different flavours of cake, and while I tried them, they all tasted the same. It turns out I had COVID again. . Even though I had my vaccinations, dealing with COVID took some...
Living my dream: Life is too short Why Wait?

Summary: When I share with people that I still ski, it often surprises them. They wonder how someone with a heart condition, someone who might need a heart transplant, can confidently race down slopes at speeds of 40, 50, or 60 kilometers an hour. The truth is, I can still do it, and I absolutely love it. As winter approaches, I'm looking forward to hitting the slopes again this week. There's s...

Post Ablation, escaping to the Morzine in the Mountains

Summary: Following the ablation, I knew it might take up to three months to determine its success. While I initially felt better, my watch continued to alert me, suggesting atrial fibrillation persisted. This brought a sense of sadness, as well-intentioned wishes for a quick recovery seemed incongruent with my ongoing heart issues. I grappled with the idea that this was a bump on the road to a ...

Summary: In the months following my last update, I continued to grapple with the challenges of atrial fibrillation and the uncertainties of my heart condition. Fatigue became a constant companion, often hitting me in the late afternoon or early evening, prompting much-needed rest. I became acutely aware of how my watch could monitor my health, often correlating my energy levels with the quality...
December 2020: Papworth remaining stable, Decluttering, minimalism

Summary: At Papworth the Doctors reinforced the importance of addressing my atrial fibrillation, aiming to delay the inevitability of a heart transplant. Papworth recommended cardioversion or ablation, but due to COVID, these procedures were delayed. Meanwhile, I continued on amiodirone to control my heart rhythm. In December, Papworth's assessment revealed stable conditions. My reluctance to g...

U r a Genius! 😃🙏🤍 💪💪💪
James, Thanks so much for recording your life with HCM on youtube, so interesting for me as newly diagnosed at age 74. You have managed admirably to live the life and do the things you love despite the constraints and have strong support around you in family and friends. I joined the Cardiomyopathy UK North London group but unfortunately missed today's meeting as I have just come to rural Italy to meet with family, and internet stability is not great. All the best and hope to see you next meeting.
