Neat Guitars
Добавлен 11 мар 2021
Neat Guitars is a Chicagoland instrument repair shop with a goal to help musicians play the best they can.
The journey began with an overall love for music, but grew by finding and refining my technical skills for repair and restoration. Starting as a graduate from Galloup School of Guitar Building, paired with years of high volume repair shop experience I am well versed in many repairs.
Keeping the vintage integrity of instruments is very important to me. The repair and restoration processes that I employ reflect this. In doing so the instrument can be played and loved by the owner now, but can also be more easily repaired in the future.
This channel is to showcase my work and show my process for your viewing pleasure.

Epiphone Casino Headstock Repair with Neat Guitars
A headstock break brings a unique type of sinking feeling deep inside your gut. I was glad to jump in with my friends at Play and Trade Guitars on this Headstock Re-build. For their commentary and Demo be sure to check out their video: ruclips.net/video/hbEhCKi7SNk/видео.html
We have an Epiphone Casino Elite Series made in Japan in need of a headstock rebuild. It has been repaired before and had some left-over glue on the break area. Once the headstock was glued back on a cove was carved out to make room for a fresh piece of wood to be inlayed. This is to help strengthen the previously broken area, and clean up the old, fractured fibers of the wood.
As always, a huge thanks to John and Zac...

Welcome! Neat guitars is my little guitar repair and restoration business. I do my best to help musicians play their best! What a magnificent guitar! A 1960s Deane 12 string electric is sure a cool oddball. In my previous video I tackled the neck issue by taking the fretboard off to get access to the whole truss rod, which was not functional. I ended up replacing the truss rod. In this little v...

Welcome! Neat guitars is my little guitar repair and restoration business. I do my best to help musicians play their best! Wowee a 1960s Deane 12 string electric is sure a cool oddball. This is my first time working on one of these but it seems to remind me of the 60's Silvertone and Harmony guitars. The neck had a bottomed out truss rod and a banana thing going on. In this video I show you how...

NEAT GUITARS PRESENTS:1966 ZENON ZES 170, NEAT Red SPARKLE, start to finish FRET LEVEL
Wow. Back from the dead. Nicely done!
Thanks!
I'm sure it's been done before.... but this is the first time that I have seen an instance where "relicing" was actually a good idea.
Yeah, the only time i find myself relicing stuff is to blend in a repair. Not necessarily to fool anyone about a repair, but to blend in the repair to not be an eyesore... If that makes sense 😬
@@neatguitars1664 Absolutely. That's what I was saying. I have no problem with seeing the repair. It's part of the history, the "life" of the instrument. But it doesn't have to jump out like a neon sign. Blending the repair to match similar wear already present is great.
Fantastic work and an amazing result - such a beautifully crafted video! I'm truly impressed. I'm curious, which oil did you use to treat the fretboard before the re-fretting? Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Thank you! I used linseed oil. I tend to use it before i heat off the frets only on boards that are really dry. In my experience, it helps reduce chip out when removing the frets.
nice gibbo love
Very nice work! It looks great! 🎉
Thank you!
Who ever painted that yellow, didn't bother to scrape the binding
Yeah, there was a lot wrong with this guitar when i got it.
Very neat job!
Thank you!
Excellent repair job 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Awesome job. Merry Christmas!
Thanks! You too! 🎄
Dastra chisels. I approve.❤
Грамотно!
buy a Fender Telecaster you'll never have to do this expensive procedure
True, but those are two different beasts.
Amazing work!
Thanks a lot!
That’s some damn nice work man!
Thank you!
Well done indeed!
Thank you

Thanks for the sub!
No problem!
wish i had skills
All you gotta do is practice!
masterful work
Thank you!
Great repair job, but I’ ll stick with my Strat. I reset my neck last year. It took about five minutes with a screwdriver and an allen wrench.
Thanks! Be careful, someone might say the "T" word (tone) then we would all be in trouble. 😂
Very impressive work
Thanks!
What sound track is this??? I love it, It put me to sleep (good thing).
My brother recorded these tracks for me. He is a very talented player
I love DADGAD Great work.
It is soothing
Stunning
Thank you! 😊
Great background music.. and this is just my guess.. but sounds like a resonator guitar,.
My brother recorded it for me. Not sure what guitar he was using that day
Helluva brother lol.. I'm just getting started with guitar repair. I've seen just exactly the proper number of videos here on RUclips to give me the confidence to get into a guitar..
Excellent work!
Nice work. What was the original problem?
It had two neck reset attempts before me. The first attempt was with screws. The second took the neck off, but glued it back in poorly leaving the heel looking chewed up and the fretboard had a massive hump in it that was choking out notes on the extension.
Why do people insist on using titebond for things like neck joints??? Hot hide glue is the way to go (what Gibson used back in the day) and it's not very hard to make or use. If not HHG, then at least fish glue.... Its a damn shame to go through all that work to end with titebond...
I understand where you are coming from and I get it. I just try to use period correct materials as much as I can. This LP is from 1980 putting it in the PVA era. Sorry to disappoint, but thanks for the comment!
First of all, a new budget guitar is gonna be way better than any vintage guitar from the 50's and 60's, second of all titebond is stronger and doesn't flex like hot hide glue, also hot hide glue doesn't age well unlike titebond 😊
@@BleedingDirt-j8n You seem a bit confused, Hot hide glue does not flex when cured, in fact when it cures it becomes crystalline (like glass). Titebond on the other hand remains soft and flexible forever and has a nasty habit of creeping (moving) over time when stressed. Hot hide glue has been used for hundreds of years and was used on Stradivarius violins. Do yourself a favor and do research before you comment on something you don't understand.
Fish glue? guitars should remain vegan.
Really? Telling this luthier what he is doing wrong, after watching him achieve this result?
Beautiful. Very judicious craftsmanship.
Thanks!
You did an excellent job. 😊
Thank you!
How would you go about rolling the edge of neck binding so that it's a softer feel than the factory edge?
I typically use a less aggressive cut 3 corner file with safety edges to soften the fretboard edges.
@@neatguitars1664 Like a small hobby file, triangular profile? Not sure if mine has safety edges.
Stewmac sells a fret dress file (item #1601) for around $30. The "safety" name refers to the corners of the files not having a cutting edge. This makes it safer when you roll the edges it won't mark up your fret ends if you get a little close. Or vice versa, it won't dig into your fretboard when you are crowning your frets. Hope that makes sense!
@@neatguitars1664 My Les Paul has its fret nubs intact. I was thinking of maybe a strip of 1000-grit glued to one side of a Popsicle stick. Would that work? This is an older guitar, but Gibson left the fretboard edge of the binding not very well finished.
Stew-Mac won’t accept any phone calls so I don’t use them anymore. There are other companies that are glad to answer your calls so I use them. Sweetwater has quite a bit of useful luthier stuff and their customer service is excellent. Excellent video!
Nice work! New subscriber here!
Thanks!
You’re an artisan! Excellent work! And awesome video work as well! Well done! 🎸 😎👊
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Nice job. That's a great save.
Appreciate the kind words!
Impressive work !
Thanks a lot!
Excellent work.
Thanks!
It's a super cool look, but having to take the top all the way off to service the electrics is effin' diabolical
Yeah, they didn't think that through at all.
1:08 Whoa, didn't see THAT coming!
I was equally surprised.
Did that start out life as a white Les Paul custom?
Yes it did. It's kinda crazy how yellow it had become over the years.
Fantastic job! I have a white 84 SG somebody resprayed black on the top (apperently without clearcoat). I can still see some original vintage white parts shining through - any good way to clean this off without destroying the nitro finish?
I had an old j-50 that someone spraypainted black. I used naptha on small paper towel squares, and a lot of gentle rubbing i was able to get the black paint off without damaging the nitro underneath. Start in an inconspicuous spot on the back and see if it does anything for you. Send me pics at neatguitars@gmail.com. i'd love to see it!
Did you put duck tap or painters tape on the finish, if so you just ruined it
Give me some credit 😂 low tack tape is down first. Layered duct tape on top for protection while refreting. No duct tape touches the lacquer.
@neatguitars1664 alright, I was worried you would damage the finish
Nice transition sir.
Appreciate that! I tried to make it a little slick!
Never seen anyone do this before, cool stuff!
Jeezz...you should have a lot more likes and subscribes with that level of craftsmanship! Well done!
Thank you for the kind words!
What a cool video! Thank you!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you!
I have a 67 Hagstrom 1 in red. All original and the vinyl only has one part slightly damaged. Crazy part it that it’s never been used!
That's awesome! I've never seen another guitar designed like these with the vinyl on the back.
@ this guitar was bought at my local music store in 1969 along with a Kay Parlor acoustic! I play the Kay quite a bit until I can get a good amp for the Hag!
