Butternut Squash aka Ryman Rang The Dinner Bell

I wrote a little banjo tune yesterday. It was on the occasion of my grandson enjoying his first solid food. So I named the tune: Butternut squash aka: Ryman Rang The Dinner Bell.

Next level clawhammer. Truly great stuff.
Greeting from Dublin Ireland. Love your playing thanks for sharing 👏👏👏👏👏🙏🏿
Beautiful song..
I arrived here via slim Jim banjos. As a beginner in claw hammer struggling with Needlecase I never imagined banjo music could sound like this. A true inspiration. Thankyou. I’ll keep on with the struggle.
I can visualize a flock of chickens milling around together with your style and rhythm of playing that tune.
Swinging! Your version really swings!
John, where ya hiding these days? How about some more tunes??
This might be one of the prettiest things I've ever heard played on a banjo.
Thanks you so much!
I absolutely love this song. What is the tuning on your banjo?
Thank you for these tunes! Just wonderful!
Just lovely! Happy I found you here!
How do you determine final head tension?
So who's plugged into the Marshal stack?
Hi John, I just ordered a pre mounted head from Balsam for my Pisgah Dobson Fretless... I'm also gonna switch the tailpiece over from the No-Knot to the Hawk. It was only on a lark that I checked to see if there were any videos available... grateful for this, I'm not particularly handy, but I think I can do this... Looking forward to the new sound.... Thanks-
I hope the new head serves you very well!
Looks like you're using Nylgut strings, right?
The strings are steel - GHS PF150. I always use those on my Bart Reiter banjos. I do keep a Wayne Sagmoen banjo set up with NylGut. But I tune it low because I like the sound. Thanks for watching!
Love it!
At 5:40 the little doggie walks by and it looks like he has a round spot missing off his hide. Just kidding John. This was a great video for any one wanting to make the switch to a real hide head. Thanks.
Wonderful tune on an amazing banjo ..Great stuff John .. Yours GUy
very nice music!
Totally transcendent!!!
It is a 12" rim with walnut rim & neck - and a Dobson tone ring. The banjo belongs to David Emery.
Hi John. Any idea what tone ring this banjo has? Dobson? Thanks!
Nice Harry!! The Kazoo Krush has bitten!!
Looking forward to meeting you and hearing you play in person at Nashville Clawhammer Camp!
John, I love your playing, and I love this tune. So much that I just bought a Reiter Galaxy of my own. I'll never make it sound as good as you do. Thanks!
Great song done very well
John what an amazing banjo .. (Nice Head too ) . Great playful attack as well with some nice layering of energy .Just Masterful . I have never made a WL tone ring sound good but then again I have not played one with a skin head either ... Yours Guy
Lovely tune, and very well performed.
Thanks! The banjo is tuned to double C with the fifth lowered to E - e C G C D
Beautiful tune! How du you tune on this one?
Brilliant! Try as I may, your rhythms are still elusive to me John. You have a unique touch. I like chords! Best Wishes my friend, Tom
warm and bright! sounds great
Another great tune of yours that it's nice to see you play.
Nice to see you playing this John. It's a great tune. Every time I put your CD on, people like it and ask who's playing. Yours, Hunter
The name is from the community of Capshaw, AL. Both of my parents grew up in Limestone County near Capshaw. I never lived there. But I remember visiting as a child. Thanks for asking! I hope you enjoy the music.
Love it! Why did you name it Capshaw?
Stunning, John. :) Craig
Beautiful playing!
Rose. Thanks for the comment. Shad is an incredible player for sure. That was an awesome jam session at Jack Pearson's home. I am indeed the JB from Uncle Dave Macon Days....
How I miss living in Nashville (and getting to hear Shad Cobb play all the time)....he is one of the very best. Thanks for sharing....are you the John Balch from Uncle Dave Macon Days?
OK! So we have original music carrying the tradition forward...love it!
Tasty Hen being served up here... wonderful syncopation!
You just can't be anything but happy after hearing this performance.
Yes, "snowdrop". I was trying one of John's great Bart Reiter banjos when he snuck up on me.
Great Twin Fiddles! Best Wishes, Tom
Man that Combination of Brian & Shad ... this was a great evening.
Thanks for putting down the banjo for a moment to record this John! What a great jam....Man that Shad Cobb!!
Four GREAT musicians! Great performance! Best Wishes to all, Tom
Dan, great picking!
Great playing and a great composition by the way!
