Disasters are a Social Work Issue
Disasters are a social work issue, and practitioners, researchers, students, and academics should not think otherwise. We live in an increasingly fragile world, and much of this fragility can be laid at the door of an indifferent humanity whose relationship with Mother Earth has been one of exploitation which has often left poor and marginalised people in both the Global South and the Global North behind.
Join The Honourable Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard and Dr. Lena Dominelli for a spirited conversation that will challenge social workers and social work educators to rise above indifference and restore healthy relationships between peoples, plants, animals, and our beautiful planet.

❤ yes to AFFIRMATION ❤ gender dysphoria is not itself a mental illness but refusing to affirm it can exacerbate mental illness of various kinds.

Excellent presentation. My respects to the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island. Tēna Koe. Ko Ko te Tau Ihu tokū iwi Aotearoa. Very important and interesting data for Turtle peoples. Very alarming and similar data is reflected in Aotearoa New Zealand with our tangāta whenua, Māori. Thank you for access to this presentation. The welcome ceremony was very powerful and honouring. Working in hospice. When management sees the person as a dollar sign to keep them on service vs what the patient needs to experience. To know they have done everything they could for their body to stay alive. No regrets. Hospice tends to want that $$ vs what the pt and family want. They send me into convince them to stay on and forget searching for possible answers even if there is none. I see this so much. Makes me vomit. Rival dilemma. When breached with management. They do not see me as a team player. Suddenly, I’m a gate keeper and they want to fire me. Moral injury.

WHY DONT YOU PORTRAY THE REAL RAPES OF SADISTIC CONTROL AND VIOLENT ATTACKS AS WOMEN ARE BEING DENIED JUSTICE BECAUSE YOU ALL KEEP PROTRAYING IT AS IF THE MAN HAD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE VICTIM AND YOU CAUSE MORE HARM TO SUGGEST IT IS SEXUAL IN NATURE WHEN IT IS JUST SADISM AND VIOLENCE FROM AN ATTACKER LASHING OUT TO CONTROL ABUSE AND STOP VICTIM FROM REPORTING CRIMES

Great presentation, I did find a teaching moment in one of the phrases used. The term "bottom of the totem pole" has a negative connotation in its use in 31:25 I would like to explore further. As a coastal native, and a member of a culture that utilizes totems, we (Hailzaqv people) do not view it necessarily as a hierarchical structure. It is a physical representation of a story, or an embodiment of a supernatural being. It has a spirit. Each figure represented is significant to the story, and should be viewed as its entirety, rather than dissected into parts, who is "on top" or "dominant" and who is "on bottom" or "submissive". Using this phrase in this context has a colonial, and negative connotation that was clearly not intended. Totems are intended to be holistic, rather than atomistic.
