No he wasn't, he made a mistake to not change his tires under safety cars, the backmarkers would have let go max in the straights as its none of their business to affect and ruin others race, it would have been against sportsman spirit for them to get involved, so that brings Max with fresh tires and Lewis with old tires in the same situation, the race can never end under a safety car, that would be bad for the sport and boring for the viewers, fans would have accused FIA of favouring Hamilton.

Impressive rate of climb - at least that was the impression given by the clouds. ...but they're usually in a hurry to go 'upstairs' for fuel savings. And once again we can see the famous Delta A330s smooth operators at landings (i think the trick is the aircraft type, but anyway, good smooth landing)
