I as a much lesser recording artist that produces his own music my little opinion is that you've made the correct decision. When i heard that section especially, I said an extra large "hokey crap batman!" When that section entered the sound scape! It raises the event of the song discovery to a striking majesty!! ❤🎉😮😮😊

Rhodes tines varied according to the metal sources available. I think that they came from raw material that was also used to make spokes for wheels. Through the years, some batches of Rhodes tines tended to break more than other batches. Not all are created equal. Also I was at Buz Watson's shop [ in his apartment 1980] when he showed me how the mushy key feel was fixed. The hammer resting point was simply elevated to start a bit higher. Way better. And he gave me a capacitor that would short to ground that hi freq "tine sound" if needed.

I’m not even a religious person but every time I hear the Morning bridge, I get shivers and often actually tear up. It’s so beautiful. The whole song is just a drop of sunshine but that bridge is one of the few pieces of music that hits me hard. Like the bridge in “I only have eyes for you” by The Flamingos. Oh holy hell, those backing vocals just wrap themselves around your head and transport you back to Bell Sound studio in NY. It’s musical magic, and it’s priceless.

I have been a J Bass player for over 40 years. I do have a really nice PJ bass but I never liked the way the two pickups sound together. A few weeks ago I took out the J pickup and nudged a Musicman pickup as close to the P Bass pickup as possible. The pickups are active EMGs and I have a 2 band EQ in the bass as well. I could not find a yotube video with that combo, so this was a just a stab in the dark. I'm blown away at how good this bass sounds now and I am using it a lot. I'm very happy to find someone else ( especially a pro player) who uses that combo.

What great interviews. I actually built some cabinets in Jay's studio way back in the day and helped him move his board from his old house to the new studio. Incredible. What a genius. I played rhythm guitar next to a man named James Quill Smith for 15 years so very appreciative to hear about the key of being a good rhythm player. Timing, timing, timing. Thank you!

Josh is a terrific musician and great guy. Long ago I drummed with his band in KC. One small humorous story was we played at a bar in Kansas known as “Some Other Place.” We played Buffalo Springfield, Beatles et Al. At break I went to bathroom and a NKC ‘soul’ man (music not race.) he said he had a group and our first song after break had to be a soul song or he would put my bass drum over my head. I took this challenge to Josh and he said no problem. We did a 20 minut version of Gimme Somr Lovin by Spencer Davis. The guy came up and gave me high five and the bass drum did not go over my head! Thanks Josh. Ed

The last time I set up a time to go to his place, I got there and he went for a haircut. I hope there's a next time because I'm dying to see the studio.

I had several albums with Jay onboard and I had the Al J album “breaking away” I love the way the Blue Rondo was interpreted for the 6/8 scat section not to mention the rest of the album. Did SG play the drums on Blue Rondo 🤷‍♂️ holy cow go down the wiki rabbit hole and my gawd all the who’s who on the credits. What a great time for music. I often say I was born 10 yrs too late ‘57. ‘47 probably would’ve been better 😃

What a treasure trove of information! His enthusiasm absolutely fills the room and spills out of the screen. His ability to recall minute details of a given session is staggering, but that’s a by-product of his passion. He’s among the few artists who had the goods to be able to work in the rarified air of the A list recording scene. This interview has inspired me to get back in the studio. Thanks, Jay, for making the time to share your knowledge!

@@lartisan6274 no thats not what i meant 😅 I meant, did he move the eq around for all those mixes, did he make the bass guitar darker on mix 20 for instance, or did they just move the faders and tweek with volume ?
