I’m glad I grew up in the Caribbean. My family consists of black and white….Irish, European Jew, Scottish, African, blonde hair, red hair, blue eyes, green eyes, hazel eyes. We all love each other and never thought of skin color. When I came to this country, it was certainly a cultural shock.

I have no idea as to how to respond as a Black American because this has never happened to me before. I'm used to being the only Black person at many events and I've always felt comfortable and never been disrespected. Then again I grew up on the West Coast and not in the South where racism is ever pervasive
