France remains the real problem in francophone Africa . That brutal and cunning colonial power never granted independence to its colonies . The handpicked leaders of those colonies were forced to sign documents that kept France in virtual control behind the scene . Any of those leaders who ventured to to go his own way was either assassinated or overthrown in a French inspired military takeover . France has impoverished its colonies such that they remain among the poorest in Africa in spite of their potential wealth . What those three countries have done is to assert their sovereignty from hypocritical France . While military coups should be condemned , what happened in those countries should be applauded as long as they shake off the stranglehold of France . So far all the silly agreements imposed by France on them have been abrogated . Mining licences that gave France the most favourable concessions have been cancelled . It should be within this light that the coups in these countries should be seen . It shouldn't be forgotten that France torpedoed ECOWAS' initiative to implement a common currency for its member states . The reason for that is obvious . That common currency would have deprived France from printing the currency of francophone West Africa ( the CFA ) , another colonial means of subjugating those countries . Bravo to those countries for taking the bull by the horns to assert their sovereignty from meany France . Why should lazy France exploit her colonies to impoverishment while it remains a world power ?

@4:49 "ECOWAS as a model community". If three member countries can take the decision to leave the community and develop their own, it is because ECOWAS has become irrelevant. The ECOWAS commission failed at making its members interdependent. One way of achieving that would have been through regional industrial projects, like building a West African car. Instead of that we see that (West) African countries do not trade with each other. There has not been a single industrial project between two West African countries in the 49 years since ECOWAS was created!!! So, I believe that ECOWAS is an almost total failure.
