Hey! We are passionate about raising and producing honest, organic foods for our family's table and ours. Join us as we tackle farming head on!
What Is Hay & Why Do Farmers Use It? | Crossing Creeks Farm
Hay. What is it? Where does it come from? When do we use it? How do we use it? How much does it cost?
These are more are answered in this month’s farm video. Thankfully, we’re able to source our hay locally. Hay is simply dried grasses and is a way to preserve food for livestock for winter use. We need to feed our cattle hay during the winter when our grasses aren’t growing, so hay is very important for our operation. We use large round bales and unroll it in our pastures to feed the cattle.
PLUS in this video, you to see how we roll it now versus how we used to unroll it (the boys were so tiny)!

Work smarter not harder!

Shane has finally thought of a smarter way to load turkeys for butcher. We herd them into the cattle barn and straight onto the trailer instead of hand loading them out in the pastures. This new way is much faster and less stress on the birds.
What’s a pig doing in with the chickens?!

Never know what we’ll find when collecting eggs! This pig decided he’d rather hang out with the chickens and dogs than lay around all day with his siblings. And watch till the end for some turkey gobbles!

We are so grateful for what rain we have received and are praying for more! In the meantime, Shane is filling up all the poultry feeders with feed. Take a watch to see the process and check out the chickens and dogs with us.

New Property Update

Here’s a little update on the land we purchased last spring. We’re feeding the steers some alfalfa pellets while we check on the land. Grass is starting to come up where it wasn’t last year, which is what we were hoping for! There is still some clean up that needs to be finished and we hope to plant some grass seed in this wooded section later this year. But grateful for what is coming up!

It’s all to do with smell, and for cattle those pheromones are pretty strong stuff. They will even make other females attempt to mount them when they’re in season. The cow that’s in season will also try to mount other cows, but from the front so that they can get a good sniff of her.
just casually standing by a bull laying some pipe down. give the man some privacy 😭
Oh that's cool
I wonder what they taste like
She is adorable! We have loved visiting with her while we're here.

What about heat? We live in Texas and want to grow ours in our greenhouse and we are worried about the heat
Heat can be an issue , especially in a greenhouse where mold can grow. By growing our fodder outside, we've been able to eliminate the risk of mold. If growing in your greenhouse is the best option for you, then try adding some fans to keep the air moving. Hope this helps!
I love this, your animals are so happy!
I am very interested in growing fodder where can I find more info on this?.
