There’s a water source, a creek that runs across the trail, right before Hawk Mtn shelter
How would you compare the Atmos 65L compared to the Zpacks? Im about 6' 4" and I've tried the Atmos on in perfect and the Large/XL seems great but I'm worried it might be a bit too heavy of a pack. Funnily enough I've been debating between the two and I'm curious which pack would be better for someone just getting into through-hiking. Thanks for the great video!
@@quinneth The Atmos is very sturdy and well built, but with all the pockets and the brain there is that tendency to fill it up. I liked the water bottle pockets and the “zero-gravity” adjustability on the Atmos, but the zippers on the hip belt pockets are nearly impossible to close with one hand. I started with the Atmos because I didn’t know much about cottage gear yet and did the REI thing. I did a hike on the 76.2 mile Foothills trail in OCT 2023 and I had the Atmos loaded down pretty heavy > 40lbs all in (7 day food carry) and on that hike around day 3 I injured my feet from that load and ended up bailing 3-4 days later at mile 62. As a result, I made the decision to start going lighter weight so I started with the pack. I also started swapping out quilts and clothing and minimizing what I took. Lessons learned. My GA section hike reinforced I made the right decision on the pack, but also showed me I needed to further minimize gear to only what’s needed. The simplicity of the pack, along with the smoothness of the zippers and the top notch accessories have made it my go to. I will say having highly “packable” quilts or sleeping bag is vital. I can’t speak to durability for a full AT thru hike and I am always open to trying new gear. The pack feels great and will probably stay that way as long as it is not overloaded. All in water and long food carries, I would stay under 30 lbs for the most comfort. I learned all of my lessons through trial and error and so now I am working toward being as light as possible, so I can enjoy the hikes more. Thanks for watching! -JB
Thorough breakdown of the Z-Packs
Good review. I have been using the Arc Haul Ultra 50 for almost three years now. At first I was concerned this pack wasn’t going to work for me. It didn’t feel good on my lumbar region and not very comfortable on my shoulders either. I bought the shoulder pads and the lumbar pad and all doubt went away. It is a great fit now. The problem for me is my 19” torso which puts me at the line between a small and medium size pack. These accessories are not cheap but are will worth the cost.
Thanks, I have been really impressed with how well Zpacks integrates their accessories with their main products. I really liked this set up and it worked well for me out there. Thanks for watching!
great review... keep em coming. I opted for the Zpacks super Nero w/ vest harness and padded hip belt.
I checked that rig out after I read your comment. Looks pretty comfortable. Might have to try it out at some point. Thanks for watching!
Nice upgrade from the Osprey pack. Your pack must feel light as a feather now.
For sure. Best gear change of the year.
Nice video! Thank you.
Thank you JB! And thank you for the video help in our series.
Absolutely!
we stayed there last year and loved it
The Green Dragon is definitely amazing. They make you feel at home and really have a heart for hikers. Thank you for watching!
We have 2 sections left of the ga section. Our next will be trey gap to dicks creek gap. Dicks creek to deep gap nc after that.
Awesome! Those last few sections of GA are pretty cool. You’ll get your money’s worth for sure. Best of luck. Thanks for watching!
Jerry, you killed it!
good start... they say you pack to hike or pack to camp, you can't do both lol. the only problem with going with a smaller pot is it makes it tough to cook Ramon or Knorr sides when you can't get regular freeze dried meals.
Yeah agreed. I think for a longer hike, I would probably have to switch back to the 750ml. For the in pot cooking aspect plus easier fuel storage. I had a larger canister on this hike ended up being excessive. Plus I had the luxury of Peaks and MH for meals. Won’t have that luxury on a longer hike. Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!
Yes. No chair zone ahead. Very justified.
Yep was 100% glad I did it for sure.
Balls out and go for no coffee. It’s an attitude adjustment 😂😂. Iron Mike got that good advice
Congratulations Big Dog. Major accomplishment for me to complete the Ga section as well. It’s a life changing experience. Keep getting after it and maybe see you on the trail one day.
@@Saltyhiker229 Thanks a lot! You’re right. It is truly life changing. Great experience and leaves you wanting to get back out again as soon as possible. All the best.
btw, get rid of the foil and just use that plastic lid to cover it. Another 2-3 oz. 🙂
Oh no! Not the hot lips. That is my favorite piece of gear for my "Cafe Time" every morning. The hotter the coffee the better for me. So, I need sum'hot lipz,
Sleeping by that water cascade in Justus creek was awesome. Nice flat for tents too.
One of my favorite stops. I recognized it from your video. Thanks for the intel!
There are two paths going north from Hawk Mt Shelter (NOT Hawk Mt Camp, btw). The path left is the one that goes to the water. The path on the right doesn't. Both path go north from the shelter.
It was nice to meet you out there. Specially when I had not see anyone for a couple of days. Seems like we are on similar paths. Congrats on the completion of GA. Let's hit NC soon!!!
Can’t wait to get back out for sure.
I did Tray with fresh legs and it still kicked my arse. Good job. Keep at it.
Oh yeah. For sure. What a day. Thanks for watching Sandpine. Appreciate it!
Hey man are you on trail now?
I wish. But no not on trail anymore, this was just a planned section hike to knock out Georgia. This hike was from Nov 16 to Nov 26 2024. Thanks for watching!
