Fruitful Session
As editor in Chief, I have covered the promises of phage therapy in "AMR Control" yearly since 2015. And we campaigned to legalize usage in OECD. I recall discussing in WHO hallways with former Head Scientist Dr Soumia Swaminathan, and she noted that PHAGE treatments have been known as a natural event for years in India. During CHOLERA epidemics, bathing in the Ganges can transmit cholera but after a while, phages build up in these waters, so later on bathing can cure bathers from cholera ! It was Felix D'Herelle who first understood the bacteria-phage cycle in locust control over a century ago. Common phage cocktails are still used in Georgia and Poland in over the counter meds. Phages were used to protect troops from bacterial diarrhea in WWI. - Yes in Belgium, Australia, there are regulatory frameworks. In France it is not legalized as compassionate therapy yet. Part of the difficulties is that the phage cocktails work better and safer when totally adapted to the individual patient. So it is the perfect PATIENT CENTERED TREATMENT. I recommend following some of the stories I published for MoH : resistancecontrol.info/rd-innovation/bacteriophage-therapy-current-hurdles-to-successful-drug-development/ (report on European Medicine Agency seminar on phages (EMA was luckwarm) Steffanie Strathdee wrote a book on how she saved her husband *THE PERFECT PREDATOR*, she heads a lab in the USA. Also see the NGO work training LMIC researchers in phage treatments: www.phagesforglobalhealth.org I have been a campaigner for phage use for 9 years now. We at : wwwAMRthinkdotank.org / info@amrthinkdotank.org, congratulate you for this webinar. One of our board members did a bibliography of key phage research articles over the years in recent times. Prof, Dr Nora Mahfouf, Algeria/UAE We will be glad to collaborate with the AMR Declaration Trust on future phage events.
