Good looking material. Does it cut nicely or need to be stabilized?
Not tried it as it is a specimen.
If you say so. It looks like a lot of premium cabochons waiting to happen.
Lovely song
😢
Born, worked hard labor and perished in darkness never to feel the wind, grass or see daylight. Horrible existence they had. Glad they no long use them in mines
Anyone have any information on the photo of the horse and three miners at the 3:29 minute mark of this video...??? Remarkable photograph .. would like to identify the photographer,,
I will redo this song. Omfg...sad yet beautiful the whole thing...
Poor ignorant souls.
So cruel what humans will do to animals. They didn't need to live in darkness. They should have worked every other day and half days alternating with other horses between being "free" ans working. People really do suck.
3:30 RUBY, the ghost of the coal mines

Brilliant video and photos
Thanks for the video. I wish to smelt on a very small scale like u. May I have your email? How do u design or buy a small “furnace” that we saw in the video? Thanks so much. This is my new hobby.
My great-grandfather in the Ruhr Valley, west of Cologne, Germany worked underground coal with pit ponies. As sad a life it was, the miners did love and care for these animals.
I remember them vividly down the old Kent seam at Walton Colliery, Wakefield. We travelled overland from the pit to Haw park wood to the shaft in a lorry. Happy memories! One of them was called 'Star'.
Pit ponies could be terrifying in low roadways, they wore masks and armour made from old rubber conveyor belt. They filled the roadway and the noise from hooves and steel wheels on steel rails was stunning. At the annual holiday they were brought out into the fields where they went berserk with the freedom.
Spare a thought for the pit ponies that worked in the Cheshire salt mines. The shafts were very narrow and the ponies went down as foals and, once fully grown, could not return to the surface, except as dog meat! Having said that, the salt mines were generally clean, safe, and cavernous so their lives weren't particularly grim, except for the fact that they never saw daylight again!
So sad that all the great industrial sites in Cornwall are in ruins
The leaching minerals clears up a mystery for me; in 94 I spent a few months around Kenidjack and I remember small rock pools full of opaque bright blue liquid. Now I get it, thank you - it had always puzzled me.
The pony lad sharing his "bait" was Jimmy Gould from Thringstone in Leicestershire It was Whitwick colliery in Coalville
Such a pity to see that these lovely old buildings have gone forever. Its some sterile business park now isn't it?
i understand that they eventually went blind due to all the coal dust getting in their eyes
That is totally untrue. A blind horse would be of no use.
Cool work! Do you ever sell ingots of Cornish tin, or cassiterite?
They were still working not that long ago. They were brought up at Marley Hill (Co Durham) in 1983
What is the name of this song?
A Pit Pony's Tale by Gordon Carter gordoncarter.bandcamp.com/track/a-pit-ponys-tale
‘Pit Pony’s Tale’ written and sung by Gordon Carter from Cumberland, BC. He has 2 albums on bandcamp. He is great.
🤔This is very interesting, but I've got a few questions, if you've got the time to answer them: What's the tin concentration in that finely crushed cassiterite ore powder at the beginning? Did you have to mix carbon/charcoal with the cassiterite in the smelting process to separate the unwanted byproduct minerals from the pure tin? Or was it just a matter of just getting it really hot, past the melting point of tin? What do you personally use the tin for, do you refine it as a hobby, or do you mine it, smelt it and sell it on the open market? I've bought a pound of 99.9% tin from Rotometals about 3 years ago to add to my element collection, and to experiment with casting it. But I'd be FAR more interested in buying a couple/few pounds of tin from someone who personally mined and smelted it from a historical mine. So, if you're selling it, let me know! Thanks 👍
Black Tin ore SnO2 you see at the beginning would be about 65-72% Sn. Yes you have to crush the charcoal or coal (carbon) and mix together with the tin ore for smelting small scale
To the people who dislike this video. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. THEY WORK HARD EVERY DAY TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES WHATS THERE NOT TO LIKE. I bet you wouldn't want to be doing that job.
Dude I'm gonna cry this is so nostalgic and this song is so beautiful too..

Hi, This song ‘Pit Pony’s Tale’ is written & sung by Gordon Carter, he’s from Cumberland, BC Canada. He’s on bandcamp.
From the wiki article of the song Lyrics (Fish and Tin and Copper)[citation needed] Old Nick, as he was wont to do Was wand'ring up and down To see what mischief he could brew, And made for Launceston-town. Chorus For 'tis fish and tin and copper, boys, And Tre and Pol and Pen, And one and all we may rejoice That we are Cornishmen. Across the Tamar he had come, Though you might think it strange, And having left his Devon home Tried Cornwall for a change. Chorus Now when to Launceston he grew near, A-skipping o'er the sod, He spied a rustic cottage there With windows all abroad. Chorus And in the kitchen might be seen A dame with knife in hand, Who cut and slashed and chopped, I ween To make a pasty grand. Chorus "Good Mornin', Missus, what is that?" "Of all sorts, is a daub. 'Tis beef and mutton, pork and fat, Potatoes, leeks, and squab." Chorus "A Cornish pasty, sure", says she, "And if thou doesn't mind, I soon shall start to cut up thee And put ye in, you'll find!" Chorus In fear he turned and straight did flee Across the Tamar green And since that day in Cornwall He has never more been seen! Chorus
Then you make stronger railings this time.
Anyone know the lyrics to fish and tin and copper? There are several words I can’t make out.
I started to have an emotional breakdown while riding my bike home. I tried to sing this song to myself to calm myself down but a massive truck cut me off (I was on a bike so you know, his careless ness could kill me) and I ended up just crying. Got home looked for thing song, I needed it.
It is a beautiful song.
What a horrible life for a pony.
