In REBT, I teach people facing adversity to ask a simple question. I encourage them to work inside out and focus on their rigid and extreme attitudes towards adversity as their first step. It really hurts though, and sometimes it surfaces. I just got married and aside from one son and my grandson, no relatives came to my wedding. Nobody was excited because I looked beautiful. Nobody wanted anything to do with something that was about me. I’m 59 years old and I’m used to it, but it does still hurt. My sister literally said she wasn’t coming because her daughter had a track meet the day before. She was supposed to be in the wedding. Last time I went no contact, it lasted for 10 years and this time it’s gonna last the rest of my life.

Of course it does. Healthy sorrow when we are treated badly is the best we can do. Keep your wishes to be treated respectfully and nicely, just work hard not to demand it. People will do what they want and not what you want, what is fair, and what is deserved. Sorrow hurts but is the healthy negative feeling when others treat us badly and we wish they would treat us nicely.

Thank you Dr. M. I lack patience, but I watched your entire video and it made a lot of sense for me. I had never heard of the concept "Unconditional Acceptance" until this week and that search is what led me to this video for anger management. I am watching this because my lonely 78 yo mother complains about the same things over and over and it is triggering for me. I understand that she is not going to change and I need to "Unconditionally Accept" her behavior, improve my perception, and try to make the best of our conversations. However, I am struggling even though I have learned many different ways to be better. I've had years of trial and error and our relationship is a roller coaster. Do you feel that some people with Autism Level 1 who get annoyed easier than most can still adopt this way of thinking- REBT? I have a hard time of letting go. I often wonder if it's my differently wired brain that can't quite "Get It" or I can't stop being triggered. My Dad gets more angrier or triggered than me. He wasn't the best role model, but I love them both. Thank you again and I will watch more of your videos for help.

I come from a difficult, and psychologically abusive relationship with my father who was a covert narcissist and had robbed me of my self-worth, I grew up homeless with him for a very long time during my upbringing and never had a good home life growing up. I managed to escape that and had to go great lengths to get away from him, I was lucky to have known the people that supported me and helped me with that process. I went to go be with my extended family that had found me on the internet, they thought I was a gift from grandma that passed away, I genuinely felt that I would belong with them and I thought they felt same way, but unfortunately, I guess they didn’t. What seemed like a gift from the universe, just turned into something that only contributed to my psychological and emotional wounds, I was only with them for 3 months because of how difficult they were to live with, and how conditional their love and regard was towards me, their love was like a benchmark, I couldn’t really be loved or accepted for just the way I am, I would hear a family member say “But he wasn’t raised that way!” “Oh it’s just gonna take time.” …and had to constantly jump through hoops in order to be loved, and if I wouldn’t, then it’s basically ‘bye peace out can’t live with your family’. I can still remember how my aunt was like “You’ve been going on 3 months!!” It’s just unfair to me how my upbringing pretty much got robbed by a narcissist father and is something no kid should ever have to go through, while my fully related brother got to have what they called a ‘privileged life’. Yet, some online stranger on discord invalidates me and went on to say “why should they love you” and “who are you and why should you be loved and cared for” and another person made a negative comment about me wanting a life there with my family and he said “you don’t seem to realize you want a warped and distorted view of your family” and calls me a “poster child of emotional immaturity”. …even a former friend laughed at me and invalidated me saying “well they raised your brother and not you so he’s their kid” and that put more salt in the wound…and my aunt didn’t even have any idea why I went to go be with them, even though she invited me and was like “why not come stay here?”. She would ask me “What are the advantages that you think you have of being here?” but in my mind I’m like “I didn’t come here just so I can gain some kind of material advantages or benefits I came to have a life here with my family” I told her “I don’t know” and she was like “then why did you come live with us honey?” …It has put me in a constant endless loop of rumination. I remember I stayed with a friend of mine and his family because his mom couldn’t sleep at night knowing that I was sleeping in a car in a parking lot somewhere. They treated me as equally as their 2 boys… I wanted that with my brother… every other kid gets to have a family home life with their families and their siblings, I believe it is the most basic thing a kid can have… but I can’t? I’m not supposed to?… I have had someone that recognized the validity of my feelings though, and that person said “how on earth can you not be allowed just the same if not more”. I just wanted a life there with my family… Why would that be a wrong or reprehensible thing? I can’t believe that, I went through that whole process, of getting away from my father, and finally got to go live with my extended family, only for it to, pretty much, backfire? all because, “they raised my brother and not me”. I thought I would be their kid too….

I appreciate this resource and the Dr's genuineness in helping people. I wish REBT was more mainstream than CBT. I believe it should be taught in schools as a core subject, and adults too. It would help mitigate so much suffering, as a major problem for humans is our inability to accept things.

You do. Healthy emotions acknowledge reality as you infer it to be and motivate you to respond to it according to your value system. Healthy emotions motivate you to do something that helps you get what you want. Unhealthy emotions also acknowledge reality and motivate you to respond to it in self-defeating ways. What a third party deems as unhealthy is irrelevant.

For me, I see REBT a lot in Islam. I know Ellis was a staunch atheist but later softened his view on religion and REBT. Not to mention a lot of his teachings came from Buddhism, Christianity and also Stoicism etc. Thanks for your work.
