I try to carry the least I can. The Sony lens with body is heavy so it’s in a photo blind. If I am walking around more it my MFT gear. I will give the monopod system a try. At almost 69 bad knees and a pretty worn out body it sounds easier. I use the 4 pro drone mostly to scout ahead and for broad shots.
Do you ever rent out your back pack?
Thank you for your presentation. Many good points. If the background music had been dropped, the video would be much better. Again, thank yuo for the video.
I modified a 75 L airport roller bag by fitting all terrain kids buggy inflatable wheels and so weight not so much of an issue. Think "Shopping Trolley" - easy way to carry all that food ! Able to take tripod, gimbal, homemade blind, groundpod, food & drink etc - it all just pulls behind me, plus have a relatively small photo rucksack on my back ( Camera, lenses, etc) Have also used the trolley for camping when doing a photo expedition. Hard to beat a good tripod for stability, especially with long telephoto lenses and high Mp Cameras or video.
It's a great bag but for an 600 mm f/4? Now i have the F stop Shinn with the insert.
Hello, I am French and I only knew Maine through Stephen King's books. Woh, it's beautiful! Thank you for sharing your adventures in such beautiful places.
Good luck with the monopod. It's something I've considered for a long time but not bought yet. So far my solution to lower weight have been one of the really light travel tripods. Not great when something moves, but surprisingly good for landscape and other static subjects. I think a mono pod is a good option when you have to follow birds and animals that move fairly slow and stills or short video clips, but for longer video it might be difficult to concentrate long enough.
Bag for life i got the savotta duffel ,202 and xl
Curious to know if you consider other bags like the fStop Shinn.
Beautiful shots of those loons Liam. The detail is gorgeous, so close and vivid. I have heard loons before but never saw them so close up in their natural habitat. I felt like I was right there on the pond, thanks for bringing us there with you. Love Oliver’s blooper too!! Haha!!
I don’t have as much photography gear as you do but I could totally picture using something like this on a camping trip. Thanks for sharing
That looks like Pickeral Pond in Appleton where we used to fish as kids, I grew up on the lavender farm. I am wildlife photographer living in Greenville Maine. Let me know if I am right so that we can exchange stories! Eric
That is correct! I live right around the corner from the lavender farm. I bet the wildlife up in the Greenville area keeps you busy!
what is the brand and model of your Tunnel designed hull? BTW I have custom kayak for lakes and I don't like tripod ... limits my ability to pan
It’s a native watercraft ultimate 12. I agree, tripods (and monopods) are difficult from the kayak
@@liamdmcinerney I think it is same model as Mark Smith uses.

Great video. I just came back from Machias seal Island and made sure to keep your tips in mind while I was filming.
That’s awesome and thanks for watching! Hope your experience was as fun as mine, cheers!
Amazing and very informative video!!! :)
Thanks, Frank!
So glad you were able to solve the problem with that Sony camera! Loved the loon footage and I am not sure if I have seen the Winter Harbor Light before. Maybe I did from the boat tour but that was more years ago than I care to say! Anyways the lighting around it that you captured was beautiful!
Thank you! When you make your way back up here be sure to check it out. Great views all around!
Great video, as always, but also a huge congratulations on the shots of the loon taking off. I bet you were looking at the screen afterward, thinking, "please be in focus, please be in focus, please..."
Thanks Glen! It’s funny my first thought AFTER hoping they were in focus, was hoping the fog didn’t blow them out too much. While the low hanging fog was still present, I really liked how they came out in black and white. Thanks again for stopping by this week!
What a simply lovely vlog! Peace seems in short supply these days and I appreciate your bringing me some today through this video. Your photos and video of the loons were simply incredible, thank you so much for sharing! (I hadn’t known that loons had tail feathers that look in some ways like a helicopter tail - so cool!!). While I am partial to plants, I equally enjoy seeing landscapes and wildlife in your content. Keep up the great work!
Very kind words, Austin. Thank you. Will definitely keep up the landscapes in addition to the wildlife! Btw, I love shooting “texture” photography using plants, especially the ferns we have out this way. I always leave them out of my vlogs, but I’ll start posting them! Appreciate you stopping by this week and finding some peace in all the chaos going on this week.
Oh, also, our cat is OBSESSED with your videos lol
I may need to pivot my audience!
Love the buttery, orange-golden sunset on schoodic peninsula and the second foggy morning on jones pond. Some amazing shots and such a beautiful area. Also something about the combination of early morning light and a drip coffee maker spurting coffee hit hard. I know that early morning feeling. Great video!
Thank you! I agree, no better way to start the day than the sound of a drip coffee maker in the early morning!
I really love the landscape photography and seeing how you set up your composition. I’d love you to show some more!
Great video! I've been to Machias Seal Island twice with Seawatch Tours out of Seal Cove Grand Manan Island and came away with amazing photos...magical experience!
It truly is magical! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my experience out there!
Great news! All the best for the new beginning!!
Hi, Liam. Interesting film. Good quality video of a deer and a fawn. What model of trap camera is this? Stanislav.
Tragopan Grouse V+
This was really helpful. I am wavering between wanting to go to Elliston Island up in Newfoundland or Machias.
You can't go wrong either way! Not sure how to works on Elliston Island, but keep in mind a landing on Machias Seal Island is never guaranteed. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
Came across this today, nice job, yes go for the drone and do the tape that @MavHntr suggested. It also helps you find it when you crash and you will at least once, we all did. Be cautious of where you fly. I was looking to visit Arcadia, and was going to bring the drone, and of course the whole park is a no fly zone. Just do the research on the places you tend to go the most, before spending $1200 for another piece of equipment you cannot use.
Curious. What type of head are you using on the monopod? Side mount of some type? Benefits? I have a monopod and rarely use it... so looking to know more. Thanks!
Hey Kelly, I’m using the Leofoto MPG 01 side saddle. Benefits for me are that I only have one knob to control locking. On my gimbal head there are two (panning and the gimbal itself). Other benefit is maneuverability inside the blind and taking up less space. I typically use my tripod for video, but in this case the monopod gives me a better chance of getting the shot. Hope this helps and good luck!
Just landed on your channel - beautiful shots and storytelling! Love the drone work as well, looking forward to seeing more of your videos
Love the turkey in the woods. Around here in Boston they’re always in groups and blocking traffic lol. Great job on this one!
Haha oh I bet! City turkeys don’t obey the crosswalk signals. Thanks for watching!
Funny, you mentioned trying to record the natural audio of what is around you - I had just pulled out Merlin to see if I could get some assists with the east coast birds.
Haha that’s awesome! Lots of veery’s, pine warblers, ovenbirds, and goldfinches while I’m out in the blind. I’ve heard grouse drumming but have yet to capture on camera. Thanks for watching!
Have you ever tried macro photography? I'm just getting into it and its pretty fun.
Love shooting macro. I had a professor in grad school who was a plant biologist and he loaned me the Sony 90mm macro for a couple months. When money permits, I’d def add that lens to my arsenal, especially for the mushrooms that grow in the woods here in Maine. Once i see them popping up I'll do a vlog on it!
No deer but the other critters are cool! Acadia can be really fun if you don't get stuck in traffic because there is nowhere to park. Getting to your destination super early will help and using the shuttle. We photographed sea birds on the cliffs there once many years ago. I can't remember what they are called, but we don't have them in NY. Photographing loons is fun, we photographed a pair in the Adirondacks on a misty fathers' day. I can hardly wait to get back out there. I wish you the best in Acadia and look forward to that vlog!
Sounds like great memories! And yes, Acadia can be overwhelmingly busy so we tend to stay over on the Schoodic side and head up to Petit Manan wildlife area. Since I live so close (1.5 hrs) to the major park itself, I tend to wait until late September and October to visit the main park. I hope I capture some seabirds you are thinking of! Either way thanks for watching this weeks vlog, see ya soon!
I just discovered your channel. Beautiful work. I was having a heart attack watching you stand and paddle that kayak with your gear in the boat! I used to have a sit in kayak for Lake Erie and local lakes and would never stand in that! I’ve been too chicken to bring my camera on a kayak! Maybe yours is designed for it. It’s so fun to see the fawns this time of year! Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Hahah this is such an awesome trip but that one song sparrow in the audio is just having a field day 😆 Much love from the other side of Canada!
Love this, nice job with the views & shots.
Ulanzi makes a suction cup camera mount that would lock up nicely on the front of the kayak.
Fascinating kayak photography love your trip tips Keep up pro 👍🌸
nice
Thanks!
Congratulations on a great trail cam capture! I can't wait to see your next video from the hide.... Whitetail extravaganza!!
I hope so! Thanks for watching!
Ok, Liam. Let’s do some gear talk. 😎 I’m a biologist and wildlife photographer out of Toronto, shooting in Northern Ontario and, when I can, across Canada. I notice you’re shooting out of a kayak and am interested in the model and weight of your boat. I shoot out of a rigid inflatable Airvolution tandem, at 52 lbs. I’m looking for an additional lighter-weight single for local runs up the Humber River in Toronto. (many, many Great Blues and Great White Egrets here - if you’re coming through Toronto, you should check it out). Cheers Tom
I’d love to visit the Toronto area! I’ll keep this in mind. As for my kayak it is the Native watercraft ultimate 12 and weighs about 55-60 pounds (it’s an older model and don’t know for sure. New models are 60lbs). I’ve had my eye in the Old Town Solo Discovery 119 that comes in at 56 lbs and is a little wider than the one I have. I’m more so worried about stability over weight tho. 52 lbs is hard to beat! Let me know if you find something suitable, thanks for watching!
@@liamdmcinerney The single version of the Airvolution is only about 39 lbs. I’ve had my tandem over rocks, and log snags, and everything the Canadian backcountry can throw at it. Super stable. Paddle safe and good luck with the deer. 👍🦌
Nice, I envy this
Thanks, kappy
Thanks!
Thanks again, Rick!
Thanks, Liam! It was really good to see some kayak photography. Too bad about the lack of herons, but I'll never pass up taking a good photo of a RWB. I blew out my rotator cuff at the end of March and had to have it reconstructed, so I'm living vicariously through your video. Just getting to the point where I can lift the camera, but the Doc says no paddling this year. Looking forward to seeing how you do with the fawn!
Dang, that’s a bummer! I know a couple people who have had that surgery, so I can imagine the struggle. Glad you are making strides towards recovery and able to start lifting the camera again. I’ll be sure to do another kayak vlog for ya again soon. Really appreciate you leaving a tip. Means a lot to have your support, Rick! See ya soon
Get yourself an IV after losing all those fluids! Nice work Liam, as always fantastic content. I appreciate the new duality of the channel, I appreciate both the home reno and wildlife content. Makes for awesome variety.
Haha yup, before I recorded I downed some electrolytes! Thank you for the kind works and appreciate you watching all my videos! I’m headed on vacation up the Maine coast in the coming week, so excited for you to see what I capture!
Thank you for another great video! I am a plant ecologist and nature photography enthusiast - now that I'm out of grad school I've been having fun shooting occasional vlogs of my hikes out in nature. I've really enjoyed discovering your channel! What a wonderful day you had - beautiful shots of both the red-winged blackbirds and the deer.
Thanks, Austin! I know the struggle of grad school all too well (but I only did a masters). I made 2-3 vlogs while in grab school and it was difficult to find the free time to edit them. Glad you are on the other side and making some content. Appreciate you watching!
The deer captures are awesome. I've been inspired to invest in a trail camera, and it has been so fun to see all the nocturnal animals and a few that roam in the day!
You won’t regret buying one…the only regret you’ll have is only having one! Thanks for watching!
@@liamdmcinerney yes that is true!
That fawn is soooo cute
So cool to see up close!
Awesome! 👏
Thank you!
Super, thank you very much! Sylvaine 👍😊👋
Great looking wall.
Thanks glen! Now time to get back out shooting some wildlife. Cheers!
