Differences In NES And Famicom Soundtracks

There are a big differences in sounds between some of the games for the NES or Famicom (the NES original name in Japan is Famicom). Even though it's the same game the sound can vary very much! It's interesting to listen to. The NES and the Famicom have differences in not only hardware in the console but also on the cartridge / disc. You want the one chip so you can see the games, if you’re stuck with a 2-chip a RUclipsr by the name of Voultar has a mod you can do to get a clear picture.
I know this is all subjective, but the RGB won in every instance from what I could see. Yeah, it looks more saturated than the others, but that's how colorful I remember it being from my childhood, so I'm totally fine with that.
Man, these test are amazing! Over the years I tend to prefer composite for the blending, and all those effects.
Well Metroid is a port, the game is the Japanese release, that’s the one you want to play if you have access to it as there are other differences besides the sound that make the North American release inferior.
I have ver5 board ch-015 but I can't find drawings for the ch connection
RGB look too cartoony and sterile. It'd prefer composite. The problem with RF back in the day was a lot of interference from all around. The image would always have way more artifacts and noise and other junk than what you have here.
Great!
4:25 why Frog's head turns red ? poor guy.... he must ate pepper
I love seeing these decomp videos
The nes output is due to when it was designed, by the mid 80s companies started releasing consoles with a dedicated pallet, if you want a clear picture you just have to pull the pallet out of the system before information is lost. Thankfully we have the arcade palette for the nes which gives us one that they used at the time.
Im using svideo on a wega kd-fs120 it looks kinda the same as your rgb, no washed out color, very saturated, are you using nintendo cables? or maybe those cables which combine composite and svideo on the same? those dont provide real svideo quality
Same problems with the reshell. I ended up using the back shell and the original shouldber buttons. I swear the quality of reshells wasn't this bad, almost 8 years ago. Makes it harder to refurbish these consoles.
Lower the quality for a quick cash grab… smh
Are you UK based? If so, can I please have some gaming stuff fixed? Thanks
No, not UK, sorry!
it is real cartridge you can check sonic 2 have same variant of it ,they did that to cut production cost, you forgot to test the 2 capacitors above maybe they blowup have a good one
Viewing some google pics of Sonic 2 i can find both ”glob top” and ”the usual” circuit boards. I find it wierd to be two different boards for the same game. But maybe there was like a transition period or something? Thanks for the tip ✌️
@@goldhagengaming you can check on microfarads mode and see if they had 10. something microfarads i guess is the value they give check 1 by 1 and see if give you any number good luck
Here is what happened to that game. Someone bought or had a fake repro on their hands and swapped the good PCB into the fake case. They list them online as having a "Real PCB but replacement shell." Then they sell the other one on a different platform outside of Amazon or eBay where there is zero accountability for sellers. If he got it on Amazon or eBay he can get his money back. However, this being the fake that was swapped into the legit / used case, I have a feeling he did not get it from a platform that will allow returns. They put them online with all the scuffs scratches and imperfections and it instantly makes you think that its a older / non-repro, legit game. Shit is slimeball as fawk and I wish people would cut it out and stop ripping people off. Not saying this has anything to do with the guy you got it from. He could have had NO idea it was fake and bought it just because it looked legit. My buddy owns a shop at a local flea market and I went to help him check his games and over 35% of them were fake repro carts and he had absolutely no idea. OFC he pulled them from his inventory and will probably sell them off as a lot. All of the fake games were traded in by local collectors.
Yeah, that's exactly what i think happened. Ripping people off over a couple of bucks.. smh.
Depending exactly what they used, sometimes you can eat through the goop on the chips with isopropyl alcohol. But yeah something about that PCB looks more modern than it should to me so it'd be interesting to see what the chips actually are. I suspect they're off the shelf programmable ROMs of some kind.
The goop felt like real hard resin, so trying to gnaw through with IPA would take ages and not worth it for more than to satisfy my curiosity. A flamethrower to the game would be most appropriate.
Its real fake😅
For sure! My theory is that the cartridge/shell is real and that someone swapped the circuit board.
@@goldhagengaming You could try googling for a picture of a real MK pcb and compare it.
Does an extremerate shell count as aftermarket?
Yes, anything that Nintendo themselves didn’t make is aftermarket. But with that said, i have never tried the Extremerate shells, they may be great :) Good luck!
To me, composite is king. None of the artifacts of RF, but hides the pixelatedness that RGB highlights. Best of both worlds imo.
I did a new test on a crt instead for a better comparison, to me the difference is huge, rgb pixels are not as prominent. Check it out if you want to: ruclips.net/video/G_epGPjOw3w/видео.html
Nice job!
Thank you!
The improvement in RGB format is impressive. Thanks you for your video.
Thanks for watching! :)
I’ve got my nes connected with composite snes rf and 64 and GameCube scart. It works well. Little Philips 14 inch crt.
Nice! RF can be really nostalic and sweet. Everything on crt looks amazing.
I really want to start repairing my old systems. Especially the NES. Thank you for the video.
Thank you! And good luck repairing your old games :)
Very nice! It's incredible how much smaller the modern power supply replacement is compared to the original board.
Thank you! Oh yeah, its laughable how big and chunky the old one is compared to the new one.
Good work👍🏻.
Thank you!
Quite surprised RF's text was easier than composite. I underestimated RF. Don't have a cable to try it myself.
Right? I sure didn’t expect that.
I’ve got mine connected through RF. it’s fine 👍
More important for an authentic experience would be a video recording comparison on a CRT TV rather than the data being transmitted. RGB on a screen recording shown on a LED TV looks sterile. Great colors and clear details, but a bit boring. Composite and RF has an annoying contrast, but the blur makes it look so much more alive. When displayed on a CRT however, they both look quite good and not too dissimilar, but with a bit more colors on RGB and what I find important for some games with small text, sharper. If you're trying to play low resolution chinese/japanese games with lots of kanji, this sharpness becomes very noticeable. If you're just playing games without much text it's not an issue at all though.
Thats why i did this a few weeks ago: SNES all video output comparison on CRT ruclips.net/video/G_epGPjOw3w/видео.html
@@goldhagengaming Awesome, great video.
Thank you, appreciate it!
Thanks for the vid. There's some places online saying you need to put extra resistors to make the Famicom controllers work with the additional cable length, but it looks like you didn't and didn't have any problems - did P2 work as expected too?
Nope, no problems for me. Adding resistors will weaken the power that comes through, so i really don't see how that would help strengthen the signal.
Love these kind of videos, great work mate! keep'em coming!
Thanks a lot, really appreciate it!
If i don't fix them, will they get worse? Because whenever i unscrew something to fix it i end up destroying it even more and I don't mind a few missing pixel lines
If you dont mind then just leave it :) It can be super tricky to get right. Over time more lines may disappear, but theres no telling how long that will take. Next week, 10 years?
I got a DSiXL second hand and I thought the screens were starting to die because the corners show very slightly brown when they're supposed to be white. But the effect is the same on both screens and pretty hard to notice. In your video footage, it almost looks like your new screens have the same thing going on. Is that just how the DSiXL normally is? Or are mine starting to die?
Love your repair series mate! Any chance on posting again more vids?
Thanks a lot! The videos werent very well received so i just stopped making them. But ive been thinking about bringing life to this old channel again!
@@goldhagengaming That would be great, I don't know what kind of reception you got but your channel is awesome!
Hard to notice on Sony Trinitron in svideo
I am sure the difference is noticeable in person on a crt but upscaled through a capture card in this vid it is almost impossible to tell. Differences in brightness will vary by TV and scart cable. Color settings can be calibrated to taste. I'd be interested to see if the difference in clarity can be adjusted with an extron rgb interface with a ddsp dip switch, termination switch and H shift pot.
my top shell just refuses to fit properly idk what to do
But what's the difference on a CRT?
I was wondering that too. Anyone that cares that much about getting the best image would surely be using a quality crt in native res. I can't believe there's any meaningful difference once you upscale and lose all the fine detail to flat-screen artifacts.
Hi i was wondering how to mod a famicom controller to play on a nes console

@@goldhagengaming tks brother 👊
Should have put S video in this as well. Looks better than RGB tbh
A new video that adresses that is in the making!
This must be 50 hz....Castlevania sounds slower to me.
Good call! It also says so in the video description :)
Well I already got one bub
Did yours work?
I like the color clarity of RGB, but the pixel smoothing of composite better
You can get that with a CRT TV. Composite looks awesome on a CRT TV honestly.
@@Destroyersoul-e9x I have a CRT and have done similar tests. My general findings are: I like composite's image blending better, but component's color clarity better, and S-Video is the best of both worlds. I think I may lean towards S-Video for 2D, and Component for 3D games
@@Nidstang_ Cool! To be honest i havent tried S-Video or Component on a CRT TV. I bet it really looks awesome. i got a old rusty Philips TV for 6usd some days ago that has got component inputs. I really need to get a PS2 and some component cables and test it. But im happy with composite and its effects even if its not perfect.
Hey guys, @Nidstang_ @Massobliteration, I did a new video on the subject comparing every video output on a CRT so check that out: ruclips.net/video/G_epGPjOw3w/видео.html if you're interested.
@@Nidstang_ I found that about component as well. Got a component cable for my PS2 and started doing some comparisons. Composite blends the sprites better like you said, but the colors are not vivid. Component is really sharp and has got awesome colors and contrast. I have to test S-Video someday, but having seen how good Component looks, i think its enough for me.
ترجمة نص باستخدام الكاميرا Does the DS Lite screen fit on the DS XL?
No. The XL screen is bigger.
Super Metroid might be one of the few games that benefits from RF. It fits the vibe.
How can I contact you please?
Great! what if the Nes Zapper runs on the Famicom? what needs to be changed?
You need to solder the second controller to the extension port
If I wanted to mod my 1chip pal snes to play NTSC games only, would I simply wire pin 111 to ground? I use a flash cart with auto region switching, so I don't need to mess with the systems CIC chip.
All ntsc games run at 60hz, and PAL at 50hz. This means that if you try to play a ntsc game on a 50hz PAL console the audio will be messed up, graphic bugs and slower gameplay. Flash carts using auto region switching means that the ”cic” in the game match up with the cic in the console, not that it converts the console to output 60hz. I hope that made sense.
@@goldhagengaming I'm well aware of these limitations, what I'm asking is how to "hardmod" the system for 60Hz video output. I don't need to play PAL games, and I don't need to worry about the lockout chip, just the video output.
The crystal oscillator controls the hz, so a theory is to swap the crystal oscillator to one from a ntsc snes. But i have no clue if thats compatible with the PAL snes and wouldnt try it.
@goldhagengaming well an original SNES revision, you lift a particular pin on each PPU and solder them go ground so the system will output 60Hz video, and, on a 1chip, from what I've gathered, doing the same on pin 111 of the S cpu is supposed to achieve the same result.
I gotta go with the composite. We are used to HD displays with the sharp pixels, but on a real CRT that composite smooths the image as the designers intended. By the way, I just booted up Chrono Cross on a composite original SNES hooked to a CRT, and I am looking at my screen and then at your composite in the video... I think your test must be broken, because my composite looks like (if not even more vibrant then) your RGB... So anyone taking this video to heart, don't.
Well of course you can’t compare the youtube video with what your crt is showing. My colors, or your colors on the crt, may be more or less vibrant than the other, and could have absolutly nothing to do with the test, cables, output, whatever. I also saw your other comments. This isn’t a ”which is the best” kind of thing, it’s just a simple comparision between the outputs for fun. Further, the developers and art designers were using top of the line pvms. Which in your statement means that virtually nobody was playing ”the intended way” at release, and a few elitist are doing it today. Sad way of thinking instead of just loving the retro community without trying to gatekeep.
@@goldhagengaming Thanks for the response. Not trying to gatekeep. When it comes to designing art for tech, you use the best devices to create the asset, and then you make sure the asset works for the intended audience and their hardware. So if I am making professional music, for example, I will produce it on a pair of high end studio monitors and get all the sound levels right. Then I will test the mix on car stereo speakers, ipods, various headphones of various quality, and make sure it is still ideal for the average listener. Same thing with designing pixel art back in the day -- they may have had various tools and whatnot, and every developer was different, but at the end of the day the intended audience for the machine was a CRT with composite cables. So they designed the art with the bleed effect in mind, and the face of the CRT in mind. Either way, whatever makes the game more fun and enjoyable for someone is what is best for them. But there is a discussion to be had over all of this, and that is a part of what the love of retro is. Just because someone has something else to add or knows things differently doesn't make them a gatekeeper. Cheers
Composite is not what smooths the image, the CRT TV makes the pixels smooth because of the scanlines, so no matter which cable you choose the image will still have that smooth look
RGB = EMULATORS
Its on a rgb modded nes. So it’s not captured from a emulator.
can i play burned games on cds with this modchip?
Yes, you can play back ups of your own games
