So many memories....I NEVER had access to a hoist in my Escort days, all work was done outside my house, in the street with a trolley jack, jack stands and a bottle jack. I still remember having to undo the front engine mounts to tilt the engine up at the front to get the gearbox bell housing down and away from the firewall. 6 inches of input shaft, one inch of clearance, because back in the British factory in the 1970's, they decided to fit engine and gearbox up as a unit, so it lifted straight up into position.....all good if you can get the entire car 10 foot off the ground..... I suggest whilst you have it out you change the pins on the selectors inside the gearbox, I have had these shear off with use. Also check the clutch throw out fork for stress cracks. I did my clutch once, put the gearbox back in the car, bolted it up again and was set to go for a test drive. Pushed the clutch pedal and it went right to the firewall and stayed there. I thought the cable had slipped at first, but after crawling back under the car, I found the throw out fork had folded and split at the pivot bolt inside the bell housing. So out came the gearbox again......and this went on the checklist for any future event. I went through clutches quite a bit....the tiny two plate Ford item didn't like 190+ HP......but ported, balanced and blueprinted 1600 Ford motors are FUN ......ask anyone that drives a Formula Ford....

@@BatysGarage The Ford Crossflow 1600 is a great little engine, the Scottish built Sprintex superchargers were a perfect match to them aswell, I had one for a while, only had about 5psi boost but it was enough to lift the power to the point I got the speedo to go off the scale at 200kph indicated and I still had top gear from the 5 speed Celica box to go and 2500 rpm before the redline....the 2 litre was even better, but LOTS more money to play around inside of...even the 1300 was fun, with the slugs from the 1600 in it......if you had the REAL money though, you had sodium filled slugs in polished bores and roller bearings, etc.

It really is only a LOVE project. After all the work and welding is done, and a new coat of paint, it's still only going to be 40 year old car worth $500. I hope you find the lower control arms with their balljoints intact, they are notorious for wearing out and the last time I tried to get one it took 6 months and a Small Ford Car Club member to help source one, lucky for me, he had a couple in his spares stock.. I haven't seen an Escort on the road in Australia in over 15 years ( tricked up car guy type modded ones excepted ), and 90% of wrecker's have closed now due to modern cars being made from plastic and other unrepairables, so actual parts have become rare commodities now. @@BatysGarage I didn't say it to be offensive or to undermine your work in any way, it's simply the facts. Your restoring a 40+ year old car, with very little appeal to a younger buyer, no turbo, no battery powered wheel motors, no bluetooth steering wheel...etc. I would be HAPPY to come and help you work on it for FREE, as the Escort and I have a LOT of fond memories together, I have owned 7 of them over the years, but NONE of them sold for what they owed me. It's the same with any car rebuild, NO_ONE will pay you for your blood sweat and tears, all you get is the value on the open market, and this isn't going UP on a car like this, a serious collector MIGHT give you half of what you spent to rebuild it, if your very lucky, but not a lot more. I spent almost $12,000 on my last Escort Van, it had everything possible done to it, fat tyres, lowered springs, teflon bushes, 35mm sway bars front and rear, Koni adjustable's on the back and 4t rated Macpherson's in front. Rode and drove like a track car, I sold it for $900, and that was more than the guy wanted to pay. Pour ALL your money into this, and watch it evaporate faster than a Mai Tai on a beach in Majorca... I'm still coming along for the journey though, I admire your courage....and I"M SERIOUSLY interested in how many different British made nuts and bolts are holding this one together, my last 2 door had 6 bolts holding the bell housing to the engine block, when it left the shed in Luton or Slough in 1978, I assume they were all the same, by the time I got my hands on it, it had two 1/2inch, one 14mm, and three 13mm bolts holding the gearbox in....and we will NEVER discuss the "fusebox" it had....

The body alone makes this a RARE as "hens teeth" beasty. The Estate wasn't as popular as the 4 door sedan or the 2 door coupe in Australia at least, I don't remember seeing many of them back in the day. I owned 2 x 2 doors and 3 vans back in the 80's and early 90's, all of mine had the 1600 crossflow motor, the 2 litre donk was the dream engine in one of these, tuned up and running 2 inch exhaust you owned a potent little sleeper....best of all, the ENTIRE toolkit required to change a clutch at the side of the road was 2 screwdrivers, a 1/2 inch spanner and a few odds and sods. I know, I did at least 10 clutches in my day, got it down from an 8 hour job the first go, to 48 minutes the last time. Simple car, simple to work on. WORST FUSEBOX EVER DESIGNED, with crappy fuses to go with it, and the rust in that scuttle vent and heater box will most likely mean a new firewall or part thereof will be needed...but she looks sound apart from 34 years of detritis and neglect. A nice set of Simmons B45's with 70/30 and 80/20 offset respectively, wrapped in BFG T/A's and your good to get out and start laying down some 11's...... HOLY SHIT !!!! I'm 19 again........!!!!!

Silly things we did as young men....good way to spend $15,000 in 1989 though.... All the alloy parts of the Riley 9 engine had melted so the guy had re-engined it with a Kent engine and gearbox, with bespoke engine mounts. Had one of these back in 1980 T reg. Great car, loads of room, not very fast but would go all day at motorway speeds. Don’t know why Ford didn’t make a 4 door version
