Miking the Drum Set with Various Microphone Configurations 480p
Thanks for a simple easy to follow video. Our organ died and we tried an electronic keyboard in organ mode, sounded good in room but streaming feed needed reverb but I can’t figure out how to do that after it’s already been assigned to mix 1. Also any recommendations for the reverb for electronic keyboard as an organ would be appreciated. Thx all!
Talkback - not necessary doubleclick, just short click to turn on then short click to turn off, or hold an speak - very comfortable
Great pipes for an eleven year old! Nice tone and dynamic control. I'd love to have her on my worship team!
Wow! Carrying on your's and Lynn's musical gifts ~
And our daughter Kristi was like that at that age, too! A blessing beyond reason...
pointed straight into the sound hole. the muddiest placement. should be in the 14-16th fret of the neck away from the sound hole. i admire your effort for trying
did this amp came before than the Spark amp? it seems so
it did.
Ksm44 sounded great in omni and cardioid.
Fix your auto focus!
Appreciate the much needed quick and concise overview
Quincy wouldn't approve that jingle though
Goodness me how did you manage to make an AKG C414 sound muddy? holy fuck 😳😳😳
Hi! What is the best position of the microphone in relation to the guitar? In the direction of the 12th fret or in the direction of the mouth of the guitar? Thanks!!!
Everything depends on the type of sound that you want to get. Placing the mic about a foot in front of the guitar at the 12th fret is a very balanced sound but sometimes you want a little more intimacy so you would move that my closer to Guitar and maybe even closer to the sound hall. However, the closer to the sound hall you get the bass hear the sound so you’ll need to use a filter to even out the frequency response. Using a high pass filter and running it up until the guitar starts to sound thin and then backing it off a little usually works. It also really makes a difference if the guitar is in a band context or solo context. In the band you don’t need any roomy low end it all because the bass and drums will cover that. There’s a lot involved in this topic. Hope that helps a bit.
Also, if the room you’re recording in sounds good, it works well to get the mic back a few feet from the guitar so that it has a more transparent sound. This doesn’t work very well if the room doesn’t sound good but in a nice studio it can be magical. Using a ribbon Mike from three or 4 feet in a good room is a very cool sound
@@billgibson6116 ok! Thank you
@@billgibson6116 I recently purchased a condenser microphone from the AKG P170 and I have a Martin D-28 guitar. I want to be able to extract a good sound with this. Thank you for the answer
Quincy has been a succesful musician for over 50 years, before Michael Jackson was born.
I do not give a shit how your board is set up.... I need to know how to ... not this bullshit No body give a shit
It's like you knew students reading your Sound Reinforcement textbook would be digging for research! Originally, I was looking for the Shure KSM 141 due to its switchable polar patterns in an SDC, but found the KSM 44 to be pleasing on acoustic. AKG 451 is excellent on acoustic, C414 I've been looking at a pair eventually (or the sE Electronics/Warm Audio's take). Also realized that bi-directional's not really ideal for acoustic (based on this video) compared to Omni/Cardioid. Ribbons could be ideal as a bass response mic paired with something brighter. Thank you for sharing!
Can you REACT master fingerstyle from Indonesia "Alip Bata" cover Numb
Likes the At 4950 and Akg 414 the best here
nice explained thx
Can you show me how you route it out and in? I mean studio one to the SQ, and vice versa. I have sq-5, and I use Reaper with a PC. I am actively looking for detail step-by-step video tutorial on that matter.
Myth
How did you set up for streaming?
excllent. i would have included the good old very popular affordable samson C02 , thanks for the great video
Thanks for the video. I didn't quite get what you described with your Aux 9. We have an ME for the drummer and I'm in the process of setting up our SQ7 (we upgraded from the QU32)
It's funny that I did these in a hurry just for our church team but it seems that they've been pretty helpful to a bunch of folks. In order to get the talkback mic to the ME-1, you need to. use one of the AUX channels. I think it's in SETUP but it might be I/O or routing but find the page with a TALKBACK tab at the top. Once you select Talkback you should see how you need to assign it to an AUX. I used Aux 9 because it was open but you could use any AUX. Let me know if you still have a problem and I'll get in front of the board so I can give you clearer directions.
@@billgibsonmusic Oh it definitely has been helpful. We usually have 8 in the band or sometimes 9, so can't sacrifice an Aux at the moment. In our old setup on the QU we use one of the input channels for talkback, so I think I'll keep that on the SQ. I watched up to part 3, so thanks again for sharing.
Was really helpful to see how you set up your SQ mixer. Thanks so much for taking the time to make it. Jeremiah 33:3
How has the board held up over time. Any gripes? How is recording?
It has held up well. No problems and the longer we’ve had it the more I like it. It is super flexible and sounds fantastic. I bought it because I wanted 9624 and they had their high-end sound engine in the SQ series. At this point, I have nothing but good stuff to say about it. We bought one of the first SQ sixes and there’s always a little bit of a time lag between introduction of the product and the introduction of the cards and add-ons. Other than that it’s great. The reverbs and other effects are stellar. For Recording’s there are two modes. One of the modes basically records the local XLR imports to a some drive. The other uses a USB to connect to a computer and you have to choose the 32 tracks that you want to record from the board. It would obviously be better if you could get all 48 tracks plus all of the effects and groups to record, but that hasn’t been much of a limitation for us. The audio quality is great for recording and everything is at 9624 so it has longevity in terms of archiving sessions and such.
@billgibsonmusic can you record the 32 channels into the drive and the other channels to your computer to get full 48?
@@tacomamusic that’s a good idea. I have Dante card installed and it’s limited to 32 channels. The SQ-Drive is limited to 32 as well. I will check if they can be used discreetly at the same time
Thank u 👍👍👍👍
An intensive project and I think you for this effort with all these mics. Question regards to mic placement. Appears opposite sound hole as compared to typical 12 to 14th fret position at the neck joint? Difficult to tell for certain by the camera angles. This would give he boomy bottom end apparent with all the mics. Also proximity effect in being that close with condenser mics. The ribbon mics were just overloaded in that position I think?
The point of the demo is that all mic are in the same spot and there needs top be highs and lows to compare. Anybody who has read my books knows that I present a LOT of different approaches to recording acoustic guitar because it's important to have a range of techniques. Yes, almost everyone knows that there's bass at the sound hole and almost everybody knows that a mic pointed about where the body meets the neck or over the 12th fret is a good starting point. I demo that several times in my books. I get a lot of this comment from people who are proud of their knowledge but they completely miss the point of the demo. If it were all about sound, I'd need to put every mic at a different location. That's for another demo.
@@billgibsonmusic I'm not proud of my knowledge or much of anything else. Was just inquiring and hoping for a non pontificating answer.
@@DaleGoodridgeMusic Understood, and now have more experience with mics and acoustic guitars. Will revisit the video to appreciate the efforts and difference in sounds. The more I learn the more I realize that I need to learn more.
Ribbons sound horrible

How you like after market compressor compared to the stock compressor? ie, is it worth paying for the addons?
They are very good. They make a big difference and are really very much like the hardware they emulate. I use them all the time.
Where is part4?
Ha! I really just posted these for the guys at our church to get started with the SQ6. What are you looking for in Part 4?
Ha! I made these JUST for your sound team at church. Obviously, this board can cause some head scratching when you're getting used to this concept because between all 3 vids there are thousands of views. Most of our team are pretty solid at this point. Part 4 will probably not be needed for us. If I was really trying to do a series, I'd make them a little more generic.
acoustics sounds really bad
Hey guys I have created this SOUND ENGINEER SURVEY for my university research project - It's very short, thanks! www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ZXL526M
Quincy Jones is master of music. All of you who think he is trashing Michael in real don't understand what he is talking about.
He is a bitter old man he has trashed everybody that wete hugely successful. Michael sold his music by performance, Quincy did not even like Billy Jean.
I can't even tell you how much I love this!! Good God. Smh. It's so inspiring!
GREAT INSIGHT. From which source does this interview come from?!
He is full of SHIT!!! His old ass need to stfu how dare him not give Michael credit now and talk mess about him! Michael loved Quincy sooo much and never thought bad about him I'm sure. So now Quincy is just proving himself to be like every other sick person talking shit about Michael!! Not fair at all. I lost all respect for him! Smdh
Quincy Jones "exist" because Michael.....this video is a example...
Yes it is
You guys ought to read his book. You are hatering the wrong guy.
Read his book. He call's Michael the most talented artist he's worked with.
Q said that but I remember it wasn't fantastically received until the video.
He admits in the video that he made out fine on the back end-that's royalties. The 30k was just a meager advance.
Jones is messed up in the head, his old ass is lost, he's got his facts messed up. The Thriller video came out in December 1983, not in June 1984!!!!! Quincy got royalties on all 3 albums how in the hell did he get only 30 000$!!! That's a friggin' lie! What's his problem?!!!
I really really despise Quincy Jones nowadays. I once had alot of respect for him! I donnot know what the fuck is his problem. Giving no credit to MJ now. Listen to all of his old interviews how he loved Michael so much, how much merit he gave him. Huge contrast to how he's talking today.
Is this the same studios they did off the wall, thriller, and bad?
Yes
i was regarding to the 3 mjj projects
QUINCEY JONES CAN TALK ALL THIS CRAP BECAUSE MICHAEL IS NOT HERE IF MICHAEL WAS STILL HERE ALL THESE PEOPLE TALKING ALL THIS BULLSHIT WOULD HAVE NOTHING TO SAY!!!
Wow! I haven't checked this for a while. Why all the Quincy bashing? Have you actually spoken with anyone inside the production team? I have spoken with many of them and they all substantiate the character and honor of Quincy Jones as a great man who brings the best out in people. Anyone remotely close to the record industry would know that the 30k Quincy refers to is a production advance-all recoupable against points on the album deal. Of course Quincy made a lot of money on those records.
if your the producer of the worlds biggest selling album in history of the music industary your gonna be rich believe me! Q your a lier and a grabbing arsehole. You said michael did his homework, he recorded a track a day on the 2nd try of thriller to cut studio time, so YOU could have more money. Your an insult to your own work and MJJ's legacy! Am fumming after watching this!
