    At 3:18, I think she says "upstairs, it used to be an opium (den); instead of "open". Opium dens were fairly common back then in Malaya. On some accounts, opium accounted for up to 60% of annual revenue for the British government from Malaya. Chinese labourers in urban areas like Singapore and Penang relied heavily on it. This part of history has largely been forgotten (be it unintentionally or buried by shame). Many smoked their lives and dreams away, my grandfather being one of them. Thank you again for this video, very lovely and insightful interview.

    Hi Nina! Were the 9-3 hours flexible? If I had remote work in the early mornings and afternoon, would I be able to start a little bit later but still make up the 25hours per week?

    • @ninabui1887
      @ninabui1887 4 года назад

      Hi! There were usually cooking classes in the morning so those hours weren't super flexible but I feel like if you spoke to one of the managers there, you could work something out! I knew a volunteer who did some graphic design for them and they lowered her volunteer hours in exchange for some of her work. I hope that helps! If you have any other questions, I'd be more than happy to answer:)
