Shenandoah in Double C tuning. Clawhammer Banjo.
Forgive the pajamas. I just felt like recording a song tonight, one I just recently learned. Still need to perfect it, but all in all I love the mellow sound this song emits.

Clawhammer Banjo "Snowdrop"
Просмотров 3034 года назад
My Son is my Videographer today. A little wobbly, and we had to re-do the video more then a few times, but I think he did pretty good job all in all. With it snowing in Vernonia, I had to take advantage of the situation by playing Snow Drop in open C tuning. I'm a little rusty despite all the practice with the re-takes lol, but thanks for watching!

      I learned mostly via RUclips. I really like Hillary Burhans, Brett Ridgeway, and Lukas Pool, and Patrick Costello all have great tutorials depending on your level of getting back in. Lukas Pool also has a specific tutorial program that is pretty great! I’ve heard good things from Brainjo, but I have no first hand experience with his program.

I recently picked up a 12" Kevin Enoch Tradesman and am working on some Round Peak style tunes, such a fun instrument! Your pops turned me onto Bluegrass years ago when you guys were up in Brewster and that's how I then eventually found out about Clawhammer style banjo.

    really great humanity and I appreciate that in your video! I'm torn between this banjo and the Gold Tone CC Carlin. I like that the Deering does not have that brass tone ring. I mostly just use the banjo to back up my singing. Neither the singing nor the playing is particularly good but I love doing both!

    I'm in Corvallis. There's a few shops here, some selection, but nothing new besides Gold Tone, which I didn't want. I bit the bullet and bought a Goodtime Artisan 19 fret tenor for Irish tunes. It's a great banjo! I'm loving mine.

    Hi, thanks for sharing this. May I ask, do you think the scooped or u scooped version is best for a serious beginner? I don't know if I'd like a scooped version or not; does losing those frets effect things much?

    • @rivermartin8748
      @rivermartin8748 4 года назад

      Personally I don't think you can go wrong either way. I do find myself playing over the scoop consistently now that I have one, and I do love the different sound it provides, but certainly not necessary. I'll also say that I don't miss the frets I lost with it as I never really played in that range anyways. Closest I get is in Open C playing Snow Drop and even then I have frets to spare. So I guess my conclusion would be, If the price is the same for a scooped or no scooped model, I'd opt for the Scoop just for the versatility.

    Hey sounds great man! I currently play a Rover and am looking to upgrade but don't want to break the bank. From the research I've done it seems like this would be a good option. The artisan looks nicer than the standard version so I think I'd go with that. How do you like the scoop neck? Is that the way to go? Thanks and happy playing.

    • @rivermartin8748
      @rivermartin8748 4 года назад

      A Rover is actually what I graduated from! Great beginer banjo imo! I played a few Gold tones, and some of the Recording King banjo's before settling on the Artisan Deering. For me I just loved the playability of the Deering's neck, and I actually bought the Americana 12" pot banjo because I loved the more mellow sound it produced and the deeper bass response. I also really like the scoop because I can play over the neck giving my playing style more of a "Cluck" Sound, or over the head and just vary the sound to fit the song. So I would recommend the scoop for just versatility sake, but you can't go wrong either way really.

    Did you get it from Elderly Instruments? How was the shipping process if you did?

    • @rivermartin8748
      @rivermartin8748 4 года назад

      Actually I got mine from Music Emporium. They shipped it to me all the way from the east coast to the west and it came in flawlessly. They put it in a large box stuffed with packing bubbles. The banjo came in a soft Deering case and they marked the bridge placement for me. All in all a very good experience. I almost bought it from elderly instruments though, and when I called them they described a very similar packaging arrangement, so I'm sure who ever you buy from will be safe if they packaged it even close to the way they did mine.

    Super nice sound and technique! I recently purchased the same banjo used. I am new to the clawhammer style and I find my playing has a "tinny sound". It just may be my style but wanted to know what type of strings you are using. Thought maybe I would need to move from a lighter gauge. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    • @rivermartin8748
      @rivermartin8748 4 года назад

      Thanks for the comment! And sorry for such a delayed response. At the time I hadn't changed the strings from whatever the Deering factory put on it. Usually I re-string with d.addario phosphor bronze light strings and have had really great sound from them. I'm told Deering recommends light gauge strings but I'm sure you could get away with light mediums or mediums without any harm to the neck. I've also put a drying rag or a large sponge inside the drum and that has cut down on the tingy sound in previous banjo's I've owned that might work well for yours? I'll attach a hyper link to the strings I buy on Amazon if you are interested. www.amazon.com/DAddario-EJ55-Phosphor-5-String-Strings/dp/B00T8L1Y3E/ref=asc_df_B00RWCUF40/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312155614707&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10559487553241596201&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032925&hvtargid=aud-801738734305%3Apla-454136414292&th=1
