Slow clothing, natural fibres, upcycling and dressing with conscience
Rebecca Burgess and Craig Wilkinson on Fibershed and indigo
The soil to soil connection in the production, use and regeneration of natural fibres is one that Rebecca Burgess has been making for more than a decade through the Fibershed movement originating from California in the United States.
The movement is shining light on ways of transforming fibre and dye systems from the ground up and engaging everyone involved in the complex process of bringing clothes into the world for people to wear.
It is a vision for place-based textile sovereignty which aims to include, rather than exclude, all the people, plants, animals, and cultural practices within a fibershed. It begins with the source of raw materials and includes transparency and connectivity in ...

Kate Fletcher on Earth Logic as the way forward
Просмотров 4352 года назад
There’s so much common sense in the Earth Logic framework for fashion research and change developed by Professor Kate Fletcher and Dr Mathilda Tham. It is entirely logical to put Earth care at the centre of all fashion practices, but it is a radical departure from the current and dominant economic Growth Logic paradigm which sees governments encouraging spending sprees as the panacea. The resea...

Louisa Owen Sonstroem on the multitude of benefits in sewing clothes by hand
I am currently reading both of Claire's books right now and I am loving them! I have started incorporating just ten minutes of stitching everyday and it is truly life changing. Its a kind of physical meditation that just allows you to decompress and helps in working through whatever challenges or just day to day stresses we all face. I am so grateful for her approach at slow stitching, and I cant wait to see how her journey progresses. Her books are so interesting and just free up the whole process of stitching and it not having to be so structured. I love learning more about the history 🙌 of hand sewing, and am in awe that Claire is completing a Phd about this textile. She makes it feel effortless and there are no rules which makes it even more compelling and for me personally and more achieveable. Thank-you Claire for sharing your passion, I cant wait to see and read more.❤
I enjoyed this, but the camera angle would be better vertical as we cannot see the sweater that shes talking about....
I am in hospital a couple of times every year. Sometimes just for a day or two, and somtimes for a week. I always have my «hospital bag» ready packed , so my husband don’t have to do that. And i ALWAYS have a knitting in there. After reading Kate Davies book «Handywomen» I am sure this is the right way to see the connection between crafts and health.
Wish good health for you. Crochet is my way to fight depression.
I have been looking for 50s cup cake dresses can't find them in my size
Knitting helps me sit still, concentrate, and stop the "DOING." I love to read, but often feel antsy while reading and I feel the urge to get up and move around. Knitting is just enough "doing" to keep me in my seat. I like to sit in a lawn chair in nature and knitting. And yes, the yarn must be real wool. I detest the feeling of knitting with acrylic yarn.
She wrote a great book- “ Design-it-yourself clothes”
This conversation was brilliant
Really enjoyed listening to this. It was wide ranging and provided a lot of food for thought. Encourages me to keep using the clothes I have. Have never thought about seed to fabric. I look forward to ordering the books from the library. Thanks!
Oh wow Jane! this is a great conversation with Claire Wellesley Smith. Her books are my very favourite. Thanks for sharing.
❤
Beautiful!!!! ♥️🐑♥️🐑♥️
A delightful interview…what a lovely idea for working out things… a sort of meditation technique as well as a journal of sorts to remember. Most thought provoking… Thank you
Quedé con la curiosidad de ver su trabajo completo . Ella se ve muy auténtica y serena . Muy agradable .
I am so happy to find this video- I love Cal Patch! She is an excellent teacher and I love her energy.
I have her book. It is fabulous.
I believe if from a young age you have a connection to your family and yourself it gives you a grounding. Over consumption is the direct affect of not having been grounded and the void as a consequence needs filling with stuff, sad 😢
Excellent. And see you in 2024.
Too bad the volume wasn't better. Can hardly hear what is being said.

So lovely to meet the author of the Slow stitch book that inspired me to start slow stitching. Thank you 💕
the best therapy-we go to and fro in time-each peace of cloth I use is a piece of my childrens clothes..
Any online classes? If so, how do we get more information, especially mending?
The worst part of not being on Instagram is not chatting with Sonya! Such a great human.
Oh how it would be nice to listen to more interviews. Thank you❤
Very well said!
I didn’t need any convincing of the benefits of knitting from a health point of view , but found this interview very interesting - thank you!
When I was 60 lbs heavier, I was miserable in my clothes. I ordered the No.2 Dress pattern and I made a dress, and another, and another.......... I was comfortable, felt attractive, and the pattern varied easily by changing fabric. As my weight decreased, I cut the next smaller size, never growing bored with the design. Thank you, Sonya.
That is awesome to hear Anna! By regenerating your own agency, sewing and resewing, you have navigated your way to good health and wellbeing. Cheers to Sonya for enabling that 💚
Hello, Week ago I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Paramedics asked me not to take my knitting with me. Almost immediately after I landed on A&E with chest infection, I started panicking and level of anxiety reach almost bearable limits. After some time I've asked for nurse assistance, otherwise probably I'd loose control entirely. It's sounds very bad, almost like neglecting my mental illness, but I wasn't abandoned. I knew that I'm in the safe place, but my mind like to play nasty games with me. I'm convinced that, if I would be able to take my knitting, I would cope with that situation much better. All the best ^^
Would love to have listened through but couldn't hear it. The interviewer's voice was clear but not Dr. Brown's.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. As an Indigenous Educator and Artist from Canada, this information is great for my curriculum development. Have a great day! Victoria
Thank you!! Clare’s cardigan is beautiful - loved watching this 😊

Sound not very good!
Great to see and hear Rebecca. I first watched her 10 years ago where she began her 150 mile wardrobe. So inspiring and set me on a handmade wardrobe path which fitted so well with my past sewing, spinning, knitting, weaving, gardening, breadbaking etc etc. Thanks for posting this Jane. I am enjoying all of your clips as you tracvel but this one in particular.
Good Margaret, yes Rebecca has made a significant contribution to helping people appreciate that dressing is an agricultural act if you want to were natural fibres rather than synthetics.
Agreed, owning less og good quality & wearing more often makes so much sense.
Thank You for visiting us Jane, This interview does remind me that I have a face for RADIO, !! look forward to working with you again soon

This interview blew me away! I wish the rest of the world could hear it.
Me too, I am thrilled to have a huge closet to choose from. I almost never buy. I dig in my bins and I redo to boring stuff. I don't ever donate either. I love the Jungian thread we all share here. Thank you!
An amazing result from your first attempt at clothing repair, well done!
Absolutely brilliant! What a fabulous approach! I love the problem solving aspect of mending too.
So proud of your work Sass. Thank you for what you do. I wish you many more opportunities to share what you do to inspire cultural consumption change. You're a Warrior.
Aww thank you Patricia, that is so appreciated!

hmmm, I thought I heard you mention in a previous YT video that your mum was a home ec teacher, so taught by your mum, not self taught...?
seems like "Stories from the Red Couch" is a series, links to your interviewed/interviewee folks would be appreciated going forward.

Yes, yes, yes. I love that she named her inspiration! I love Cal Patch and Sonya Philip. I have made close to 50 Dress No 2's out of second hand fabric - very Sonya style, mixing and matching polka dots and gingham and stripes. I love my "new" (6 years) uniform and truly feel the best version of myself in ages, because I exclusively wear tunics and skirts that I have made with my own hands, out of cast-offs. (And Blundstones or Birkenstocks; and my every growing stash of handknit sweaters and socks and scarves and cowls - also from mostly secondhand yarns).
Yes Celeste, these women are really making an impact by enabling individual and independent style :)
Oh my goodness, I want her/gather here to teach how to start that business in other communities. I love everything about her and her business mission and vision!
Yes, Virginia articulated her mission and purpose so well :)
Hi Kathryn! Hi Jane! This is so exciting. I emailed you, Kathryn.
Glad you enjoyed Kathryn's story Jaki. My last hours in US now, on to the UK tonight :)
