Making of a stave drum set - Part 5: Bearing edges, rest of the parts, assembly and quick test
Finally! Lot's of routering, drilling, cutting, sanding, filing, painting, redoing, fixing, sanding, screwing, sanding, carving, sanding, measuring and some sanding later they are ready! Well, as I'm writing this, they have been ready about 1 year and 4 months already... But the video is ready! (And proper test drive is coming too at some point.)

Refinished drum kit - Overview and soundcheck
Great job man, sounds fantastic, enjoy.
Verii naice llolola!!
Do something with the smallest rack tom…that buzzing downward pitch is annoying. BD sounds good, as do the floor toms.
Yes, I've been meaning to do a full sound test video. The 10" tom just wasn't tuned properly. It's been over two years since I made them so one of these days I'll show you how they really sound🤟
That is completely and totally BAD ASS !!!!! VERY VERY impressive and inspiring. After watching this I think I might have to attempt this. Awesome job man!!!
Thank you! If I can do it, anyone can do it🤘
Amazing Job Jhuan so inspiring extremely inspiring and honestly thank you for sharing your experience & knowledge, god bless you. Keep the good music playing.
Congratulations Johan!, I believe that this level of refinement and attention is what is lacking in the big brands, I have always had entry-level instruments, and it is noticeable that some manufacturing processes were skipped, congratulations on your work! the sound was incredible!
Genial 😊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

On kyllä hieno setti!
Followed the process from part 1 Loved every minute of it!!!!! Just out of curiosity how much would you charge someone to build a kit like that?
Thanks! Well, that is hard to estimate. Probably more than 3000€, due to hours, materials and hardware that I spent in to the project.
Eu.gostu.muintu.desi.trabalho..eu.tanben.fasu..esti..trabalho..emohinto..legau.😊
I bet you that 1 of a kind drums. Set Set would cost you a pretty penny if You were to buy it.
Beautiful drums great job 😊
Nice one
In your shoes I’d build a phill collins kit
I like the center design you made. I kinda think it would have even better if you made it wider with the deeper shells.
Thanks! I did a similar desing on these drums some time ago: ruclips.net/video/JEDwTutp2ZY/видео.html I made the center thing wider with the deeper shells but, I think it looks better if they are all equal width. Opinions, opinions🤔
Are you using the same wood router for milling the exterior shell but placed bellow the workbench?
Yes.
What kind of timber did you choose and why?
Birch planks, because I like the sound of my tama superstars, which are made from birch ply wood. It's also the cheapest hard wood, at least here in Finland.
Awesome work man!!!
Tip: Starting with the bass drum is the best because it's difficult and any rejected staves can be easily reused by milling them down for the floor tom staves. Likewise any floor tom staves that get messed up for whatever reason, can be usually used for a rack tom....so if anyone ever does this, cut staves for the biggest drums first and there will be less waste.
Just finished building my first snare drum out of quarter sawn sycamore that I cut down and milled / dried two years ago....despite a few mistakes it came out pretty good and sounds killer. I will be using the rest of the sycamore to make an entire kit, including a 24" bass drum, so thanks for making a lot of mistakes on video so I can avoid them!

Who is this pale white Mystery kid from the North ha ha, good Job
Are these the Stave Drums you made? and if so what kind of wood are they? Also Good Job
No, these are my Tama Superstars. They are made of birch, which I also used to make my stave drums. At the end of this video ruclips.net/video/kTsUGfNNcPo/видео.html you can see my stave kit somewhat complete, I still haven't made a proper video of them.
@@juhailola Cool man, I'm gonna try and copy you, I don't have many Birch trees on my property so I'll have to use maple or buy a Birch log from the mill down the road

How thick it Juha?
How thick is what?
@@juhailola finish thicknes of the drum
@@anditoba4096 About 6-8mm
is the thickness of each drum shell same ? or different ? for example thickness of snare is same with bass drum ?
I tried to make them as thin as possible, they are about 6mm to 8mm thick. So almost same thickness for every shell.
@@juhailola ok 6mm to 8mm for final thickness! and how about before shaving wood i mean thickness of each stave before milling inside and outside of shells? how many drum sets did you make with stave technique.. i want to know about the acoustics and yoyr exprience about tonewwod issue ? a

Where did you buy the lugs?
I did not buy them, I made them.
Can you recommend any resources for building drum(specially bearing edges)
I used google. There is lots of information about bearing edges. St drums have a very detailed video at their channel where they test how different types of bearing edges affect to the sound.
AWESOME!
That kit looks and sounds amazing, I have no woodwork experience, but really wanna try making some custom drums
Thanks! If I can do it, anyone can do it! So go ahead and make some drums :)
Hi what Mirrors do you got?
I sold the bike in 2017 so I can't remember other than I bought them from ebay. Probaply from china, they were cheap and they lost color pretty fast.
Ok thanks bro
I'm very impressed with your patience and dedication to make a good instrument! How did the "ancients" make drums: did they bent wood or did they saw the wood in angles just as you did? Have a nice week!
Thanks!
Is this a freshly cut tree, not dried? And how is this drum today?
Of course it is dried. The drum is still my main snare and it works just fine.
@@juhailola How did you dry fresh wood? And how long did it take?
@@maig4eg Just air dry. Few months outside, then cut to lumber, few weeks in the garage and then few weeks indoors. There may be better and faster ways but that's how I did it.
Wow expensive drums

I just finished watching all 5 videos. Your craftsmanship and attention to details is incredible. Congratulations on this beautiful kit. Enjoy it and thanks for sharing the videos!!
Thank you!
I try to do stave drums too. I have done 8" and 10" stave shell and I want to do jig for milling the outside. How does your shell is blocked in the jig? is it just clamped with the of wood on the threaded rod with nuts? Thx ! :-) (sorry for my bad english ^^)
Yes, it's clamped just like you said.

how do you calculate de side angle cut?!

Nyt on komeet! Paljonko meni aikaa ja rahaa rakentamiseen? Ite oon kans kustomoinu yhden halpis-virvelin omaan makuun ja tilannu Jenkeistä omiin kannuihin uudet päällysteet. 👍
Kiitos! Olisko yhteensä kuukausi menny, rahoja en laskenu mutta olis varmaan saanu ihan hyvän valmiin setin kaupasta.
Varmaan pääasiassa menny rahaa koivuun, maaleihin, kalvoihin ja hardwareen
Was the first part of this video simply thinning the shell?
Well yes, but mostly to make the outside of the shells round and to achieve the right outside diameter.
